NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

No more than ONE submission by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.


So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer.

You have to put together the cover for #223 of something called NEW WORLDS.

You have been told that NEW WORLDS is the most groundbreaking, forward-looking, ambitious and original science fiction magazine in the world.

And that's it.

A little background: NEW WORLDS was in fact all those things... in the late 60s and early 70s. Its last issue, #222, came out in 1997. A visual history of publication. It was hugely important, made all kinds of new connections and broke all kinds of rules.

So it's your job to imagine the kind of cover that that kind of magazine might have today.

You have one week. Go.

Not sure if Rule#5 would apply to a description of a concept, would it? After all every design has some elements of a story to it.

For example my own design, someone could be inspired to write about an astronaut waking up in a white void staring at a universe the size of a bowling ball (if the writer had been drinking a lot and ran out of good ideas).

I pictured it as a super low budget sci fi fanzine, made by people who haven't got a clue what they're doing.

This poster was fun- again, it was tweaked to fit this challenge, but the actual final, colour poster is much different and (at 17x22) will be EPIC... and I'll post it to the Artist's thread in June.

ALE: Really cool. We don't see a lot of 3D modeling here, and it really fits with the theme.

Clone Artist: I like how you got a bit "messy" with this one; lots of little hairs and scragglies in there that look really good.

leighwoosey: I love whatever that picture is (water drops on a window? Is it a photo or a computer effect? I can't tell...). The dots of color are really cool.

I have to admit that I was stumped all week with this one. I had an idea, but just couldn't make it work, and I started maybe 5 different drawings that I ended up scrapping because I didn't like them or they weren't going anywhere. Your best bet for turning your line work and hand drawn typography into vectors is probably Illustrator. Between the pen tool and Live Trace, which should do quite well with clean, solid lines like yours, you're pretty much set. Wow that takes me back, I have a blue and white 466 sitting not 3 feet from me that I just bought a new video card for so I can see what old projects I have on it. What you'd be looking for is anything CS2 or higher, I'm almost certain that machine will run cs2 if not cs3. Alternatively you can try and track down a copy of Adobe Streamline, which is what Live Trace used to be before it was folded into the Creative Suite. Drop me a line if you need more info, don't want to derail this into a tech support thread.
