On the radio the other day they played an a cappella cover of Metallica's 'Master of Puppets'. The group is called Van Canto and I've come to find out they primarily cover metal songs a cappella.

http://www.vancanto.de/

Here's their cover of 'Master of Puppets'.

The cover songs are, by and large, terrible. The first album, however, is great. The song The Mission sounds like several members of a church choir got together, realized they were actually closet Norsemen and summoned a Valkyrie to round out the group sound. The second album is a mess and basically unlistenable.

I was gonna start a post on this but it already exists - still on the fence about the whole a capella metal action. It's like being presented with a giant noodle bowl (I love noodles) only the noodles are blue. I want to like it, I should like it, but just can't.

Pros: they save money on gear and electricity
Cons: Can't market to guitar hero and rock band franchise

I keep thinking they're gonna bust out a new version of Where in the world is Carmen San Diego

Certainly a good laugh. And remarkably well done, although I can’t imagine listening to it for more than five minutes.

Do other genres of music have parody bands that manage to actually make money by mocking the genre? Metal has Anal Cunt, DragonForce, these guys, and plenty of other goofball metal acts. Is there anything similar in genres like country or hip-hop?

I do a bunch of a cappella semi-professionally and I have to say these guys are really good! Assuming there wasn't too much manipulation in the studio: their blend is awesome. I thought it was one guy layered until I clicked through to the website. And doing slides all together like that at the end of a line is not easy! I'd love to see this live.

James, in response to your question about parody bands in other genres, I recall Reggie Watts who was featured on Coilhouse a while back. He does hip hop parody and is quite good, and actually sometimes does it a cappella too. ^_^
