    For the last six months or so I've been snatching each opportunity I can to work on a personal project that is now nearing completion! It's a 14 page mini-comic with which I've been testing many of the skills I've learned whilst doing Freakangels, and practising a few of the skills that Freakangels hasn't exercised for one reason or another. There's no literal storyline here, it's more of a "visual poem", which sounds (and probably is) a bit pretentious, but for me is pure self-indulgence. It's taken a long time to do so little, but I've been trying to push myself to the limit with this project.

    Here's the first double-page spread, which I finished yesterday!

    Signal, page 1&2

    You can read about the progress of the project on my blog, under the label Signal. I'll be posting further updates both there and on this thread!

    Current progress:
    Roughs: 1-14 complete!
    Neat Linework: 1-14 complete!
    Flats: pages 1-8
    Colours: pages 1-4

    If it's all going to look this beautiful, please continue being self-indulgent! I'm marveling at the coloring of space in the background, and loving the golden ratio design thing the whole piece has infused throughout it.

    That's lovely! The patterns remind me of Fibonacci spirals. I am intrigued and look forward to seeing more.

    Thanks! :D I'm glad you guys noticed the golden spiral. I wanted to try to use it to guide the eyes round the page in the absence of clear borders.

    Echoing what's already been said, that is seriously good looking, for some reason it made me think of The Fountain. Also you must be a machine to get anything done outside of FA, great stuff.

    The four-panel grid in FREAKANGELS makes it accessible to the widest possible audience. Some people have a real hard time processing visual experimentation. I know people who can't watch the TV show NUMB3RS because of the visual stuff that happens when Charlie is explaining his math, which was inspired by the stuff they did in the Russell Crowe movie A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Would the show work if they didn't have the experimental stuff? I don't think so, because there are a lot more people who can't learn advanced math without visual demonstrations, and it's MEANT to look like the mind of the genius is operating on another level.

    I don't know if visual poem is the right word for this project... if it's not Linear Sequential Art could it be Quadratic Art? Fractal Art? Integral Art? Pretentiousier?

    @Paul Duffield.

    That is fucking astounding. I particularly like the windows, the landscape and the the shadow of the frames projecting across the floor. I really brings it to life for me.
