I'll state a more complete response after I've read the paper it was based on.
-also it apparently takes about an hour for the caffeine to really hit your system...I want to know if they took THAT into consideration with the trials, as well as how one can build up a tolerance to it over time. It's also a SMALL sample size for a study. If someone else can replicate it, with the same results, then I'll be more impressed.

 They mention tolerance in the article;
With frequent consumption, substantial tolerance develops to the anxiogenic effect of caffeine, even in genetically susceptible individuals, but no net benefit for alertness is gained, as caffeine abstinence reduces alertness and consumption merely returns it to baseline.

About a month ago i gave up booze, fags and coffee as part of a slightly desperate attempt to bring my blood pressure down to acceptable levels. I used to start the day with a litre caffetiere of viciously strong coffee and another couple of buckets at work. I missed it a lot when i first stopped but with time the yearning has lessened and i get by fairly happily on water and fruit juice now. Perhaps there is something to this tolerance business. Mind you, i'm not working at the moment, how i'll cope getting up at 3 or 4am without a mug or two of twitch juice could be a completely different story.

As for Red Bull and its 4 for a quid poundland clones, vile, sickly stuff, only use it in emergencies if i get the nods on a long journey and can't get hold of some decent coffee. Dunno what the good Mr Ellis sees in it meself.

I'm actually curious how they measured "alertness." Seems like a pretty subjective thing to me.

Plus, wasn't there a study that came out like two months ago that said moderate caffeine use increases brain plasticity, and thus, facilitates learning? Maybe my caffeine-addled brain is making that up, but I'm pretty sure it's at least partially beneficial. It may not have the same kick for people that need two cups just to open their eyes in the morning, but that doesn't mean people should just kick it to the curb.

You also have to remember that delicious delicious Red Bull is chock full of vitimins B12 and B6, both of which increase metabolism, which increases energy levels. It's not just the caffeine in a lot of these energy drinks that gives you the *actual* energy boost but vitamins and other less savory things that actually have been proven to increase energy levels (either immediately or over time).

Also, in agreement with Rootfireember... I'm pretty sure that I've seen reports on PET scans proving that caffeine does give you a mental "pick-me-up." But that was a while ago... and my booze/caffeine/nicotine addled memory gets fuzzy sometimes...

PET scans can use to trace a variety of things; though glucose metabolism is one of the most common. Standard warnings before a PET scan include limiting the caffeine and the glucose you take in to your body, so I'm assuming the tracers can attach to glucose and caffeine molecules with very little trouble.

also: Here's a study that found the opposite of the one posted above.
" those who received caffeine had significantly greater activation in parts of the prefrontal lobe, known as the anterior cingulate and the anterior cingulate gyrus. Caffeine doesn't make me feel more alert, just jittery and more awake. I don't even both with Red Bull and it's ilk anymore (especially since the stuff taste like carbonated cough syrup). Instead, I use 5 Hour energy. It still tastes nasty, but there's a lot less of it to drink and it does seem to last longer than energy drinks.

That said, when I want to be able to think and act with alertness, I prefer Amphetamine mix(basically generic Adderall). It clears my head, helps my concentrate and for some reason it lets my imagination flow a lot more freely.

Thing is, Red Bull doesn't really have that much caffeine, comparatively. The thing that gives it the extra kick, and what 5-Hour Energy is based off of, is huge amounts of B-complex vitamins. I've been finding it much more effective and cheaper to just get a good full spectrum B-complex to take along with my other rather extensive daily maintenance stack.

I don't necessarily believe I'll be any healthier or socially purer for the effort, I just find it cheaper and more trustworthy to assemble my own product.

I can definitely testify to the ~4hr caffeine half life (which depending on dose can take quite a few half lives to drop down) and the tolerance than grow to be quite impressive. The more interesting part I've found in my experiments with coffee extractions is the wide pharmacopoeia of the coffee bean; there's a hell of a lot more in there than just caffeine and different extraction technique may select the components differently. The crash I'm accustomed to with energy drinks and sodas I think is more sugar based than caffeine, while the post-diner coffee crash may be theophylline instead of caffeine.

Not to be guilty of too much shameless whorebaggery, but I give to you early experiments on the Black Blood of the Earth Test Subjects.

Interestingly, there's a close chemical relationship between niacin (B3), one of the main B complex ingredients in Red Bull, and nicotine:

Niacin was first described by Hugo Weidel in 1873 in his studies of nicotine.[5] The original preparation remains useful: The oxidation of nicotine using nitric acid.[6] Niacin was extracted from livers by Conrad Elvehjem who later identified the active ingredient, then referred to as the "pellagra-preventing factor" and the "anti-blacktongue factor."[7] When the biological significance of nicotinic acid was realized, it was thought appropriate to choose a name to dissociate it from nicotine, to avoid the perception that vitamins or niacin-rich food contains nicotine, or that cigarettes contain vitamins. The resulting name 'niacin' was derived from nicotinic acid + vitamin.

I had no idea of this, but it certainly goes a way towards explaining the synergy between Red Bull and smoking. Also, there needs to be a band named "Anti-Blacktongue Factor."
