    I'm guessing that study that ravnos mentioned, and I vaguely recall reading (I really wish I could remember where I find these things), used a caffeine pill, much like the study in the OP. Thus blood sugar level should have very little to do with the results. And I'm assuming you know that caffeine != sugar.

    PET scans can use to trace a variety of things; though glucose metabolism is one of the most common. Standard warnings before a PET scan include limiting the caffeine and the glucose you take in to your body, so I'm assuming the tracers can attach to glucose and caffeine molecules with very little trouble.

    also: Here's a study that found the opposite of the one posted above.
    " those who received caffeine had significantly greater activation in parts of the prefrontal lobe, known as the anterior cingulate and the anterior cingulate gyrus. These areas are involved in 'executive memory', attention, concentration, planning and monitoring."

    “This type of memory is used when, for example, you look up a telephone number in a book and then mentally store it before dialling,” he adds.

    edit: Just read the abstract of the actual study and...
    wow. The journalism 'based' on it seems to have little to do with the actual study for example the study abstract says:
    Placebo administration in MHp[caffeine consuming] participants decreased alertness and increased headache

    hahaha me too...but now im cutting down after my doctor told me my extreme tea drinking is 99% of the reason ive started getting kidney stones. shockingly, i havent experienced any MAJOR withdrawal symptoms

    Having done some digging around, i gain some small comfort from discovering that you're all mad and it's not good for spiders. Funny that, i can think of one that seemed to get on fairly well with it...

    Roadscum- most of those are about Caffiene toxicity which occurs after drinking over 300mg of caffeine.

    @ Rootfireember: Over 300mg? That would have been me in the morning then. So where would Irn Bru sit on that poster then? Hang on, 114mg/l x 330ml/1000 = 37.62. Irn Bru, the lorry driver's friend, who the fuck needs energy drinks? And the ads are rather good too.

    300mg in a 5-hour period would definitely make me jittery. I start getting headaches around three cans of Mountain Dew in that period, and I generally nurse a can of Red Bull for most of a morning. And this is from someone that drinks a pretty heavy amount of soda.

    Anecdotally, a fair amount of the morning pick-me-up from [insert beverage here] is less from the caffeine, and more from having tasty liquid in my system. The caffeine really doesn't start to do its thing until I start dragging in the late afternoon, at which point I begin pulling out stops.

    But back to the original posted article - it sounds like whomever wrote the article was already predisposed to dismiss the research, so it sounds to me like regardless of how silly the initial research was, that "news brief" did a terrible job of reporting it.
    The link they provided sheds a little more light on the research, but I did go a little cross-eyed trying to understand it.

    Surely not? El Reg is renowned for its restrained, impartial reporting. They do like their coffee though.

    Those who drank more than six cups of tea a day cut their risk of heart disease by a third, the study of 40,000 people found.


    I'm going to be having words with my GP about that one, oh yes.
