God damn, Luke's bit of ranty actually reached a valuable Big Question point. If the Freakangels didn't have to fuck over the world for self-protection, what are they obligated to do now? That didn't mean the comic needed to be renamed "Ranty Luke and Those Other Freakangels Tossers." So yes, I enjoyed KK breaking a chair over that dick with a mouth's head. Besides, she owed him a big one for trashing her KK-copter.

But the biggest bit of comic violence had to be Kait's shot to Jack's bollocks. Methinks Luke's rant perhaps cut her a bit deeper than she's letting on with her explanation. She's more angry now about him being right than she is about her bike - though I've no doubt it was all about her bike up to that point.

And Kait ... well, we knew compassion wasn't her strong suit. I ask because I'm wondering if it's not so much that the 'angels can't die, but that they can't kill. At least, they can't kill each other. Mark "died" when Karl and Kirk spiked his brain. Luke "died" when Jack shot him in the head. The act of murder is an intimate one, especially among people as closely tied as the 'angels. Perhaps there was a built-in safeguard in the package that the only thing deadly conflict would do within the 'angels is strengthen then. Not much point in killing your fellow 'angel when the only thing that'll happen his he/she will come back stronger than ever.

Interesting concept. But I'm not sure how much stock I'd place in it, especially after it's been shown that Mark isn't exactly on the cutting edge of Freakangelology. I wonder if it has more to do with a 'psychic net' of their collected minds which would require all the Freakangels to be 'dead' at the same moment to stop them from coming back. Another question is if the psychic consciousness of an individual Freakangel transcends time/space so that they cannot die simply because they exist at other points in the continuum? More likely it could just be their future selves delivering a cross-temporal psychic defib, which leaves traces of more refined psychic energy/experiences.

For the anniversary issue: the return of the chair leg of truth!

Luke’s rape raised the question: is rape really rape if it can be reversed? We had the debate, and we know the answer: absolutely.

The murders of Mark and Luke raise a similar question: is homicide really homicide if the death can be reversed? It’s the same answer: absolutely it is still homicide, which means the perpetrators: Karl, Kirk, Jack and possibly Alice are absolutely murderers.

The question isn’t whether it’s homicide but whether the homicide is justifiable. WHITECHAPEL defends itself from external threats all the time. Is that murder or defense? Are Luke and Mark not enemies of the state, considering the added threat that the package gives them?

The real problem with justice as the FA defined it is the long-term plan. Namely, there isn’t one. Once they exiled Mark it was only going to be a matter of time before someone else got exiled, and then someone else, and then someone else. So the next obvious step is to just kill them, like Arkady warned Luke was about to happen, and have that be the deterrent. But what do you do when the guilty parties (Mark, Luke, Kirk, Karl, Jack and maybe Alice) almost outnumber the prosecutors? Luke proved lock-up doesn’t work. Mark showed exile doesn’t work. And now execution is no longer possible.

Are the twelve FA at the end of the story sitting next to each other as a way of keeping a permanent eye on each other? Seems more like hell than heaven!

As for what the FA actually are, I’ve got a couple more theories. It's about to get real nerdy, so forgive me in advance...

There's an esoteric school of thought that believes the first man, Adam, was a plant-based life-form, who cell-divided to create Eve, the first woman, and the snake in the Garden of Eden represents an evolution from plant-based life forms to animal-based. When Jack asks "Is an egg a fruit or a vegetable?" he's unknowingly touching on a forgotten aspect of evolutionary history. Luke the animal would die after being shot in the head, but his vegetable spirit would live on for a while until the cells are no longer nourished by blood. He's still bleeding, which means his spirit is still making the organs work, even after suffering injury that would kill an animal. But if you shoot a head of lettuce it will still grow just fine. If the FA are the next step of human evolution, they can draw energy from the spirit world to defy the physical laws, and alternate between the vegetable, mineral and animal forms at whim. Arkady can dissolve the material forms altogether and relocate them elsewhere, which means they can transform into pure spirit.

The FA are ancient gods.

Also: the number twelve corresponds to the zodiac, which is more than just your horoscope: the zodiac is the history of the twelve ages of mankind. Luke said twenty or thirty years in the future. Shooting down KK wasn't just strategically stupid and arrogant, it was suicidal. KK was basically admitting to Connor that she was going to vote to keep Luke alive. He shot down the one person who might have cast the deciding vote to spare him! Luke is good at criticizing the group, but he's blind to his own mistakes.

As for KK... she's probably the most popular among the other FA. It was her voice that turned the tide of opinion in BOOK TWO, to convince them to expand their population. The chair-wielding, nutcracking heroines of episode 100, for instance. How can we examine KK's invitation to all of us to enter the world of the Freakangels? She didn't exactly give the impression that she had or would take good emotional care of her partner in the first panels, did she? (and didn't resist the rampant traces of racism that the others happily used to mock her...) Was the "poor boy" consenting? Probably. But nature kinda swayed things in her favor there, didn't they?

It's so easy for us to simplify victimization and power but the dynamics are incredibly complex and problematic. How many times have we witnessed the withholding of basic needs or worse resulting in total misery for men and women alike in the world?--KK's aloof flaunting of her assets around Whitechapel or Kait's little playpen are just what they're supposed to be, just what myth has always been: allegorical ways for us to recognize in the extreme what we play out in the ordinary.

Most of them, to their credit, are doing what they can to make the world they think they broke, better. Each has a legacy of great talent and potential that has been misunderstood at best and persecuted violently at worst their whole lives. We haven't gotten the particulars of their childhoods, but we've learned that all of them were abandoned and rejected by the non-Angel networks that are traditionally responsible for socialization.

It's a bloody miracle any of them managed to school their tendencies into technical, useful skills, or, like Mikki and to some extent Sirkka, have become healers. I think Arkady and Connor would qualify here, and Caz, KK and Karl certainly turn their acumen to the active benefit of society. Jack and Kirk are doing their part, in their anti-social way, while Mark and Luke have not quite grown beyond the Nietzschian superman complex. It's a lesser state, but interesting in its manifestations.

And I can't say I really like them. The only FA's I could really say I actually like are probably post-OD Arkady, Caz, Connor, and Miki. They all seem genuinely concerned with other people, whereas the others only seem concerned with themselves. All the rest of them have faults that make them either disagreeable or flat-out sociopaths. And while I relate to them for that, I certainly don't like them. I like them as characters, but not as people, if that makes sense. And I realize at this point I'm basically repeating monk's post, so I'll leave it at that.

As for specific "hypocrite" examples:

Kait - has that wonderful pit, in the name of law and order and justice. We're still not exactly sure what goes on in there, but there's a fair bit of blood and evidence that Kait doesn't really stay within the realm of humane treatment of suspects. And we don't really know how much we can trust what she has said about that sort of thing, as she's clearly capable of doing whatever is, in her mind, necessary.

Sirkka - mental surgery for victims (without their consent in at least one case, but again, not here to argue this point again) and building a defense army on sexual and emotional dominance, rather than Mark's pure mental rewiring.

KK - I don't think here's really that much hypocrisy here. She just has bad ways of dealing with people, in my opinion. But I suppose I can see a case for it in her moments from flashbacks.

Luke is not a victim. He's one of the twelve most powerful people on the planet. Luke had plenty of second chances. He forced the issue. No one made him up the ante when the others were perfectly willing to leave him alone. He could have left Whitechapel on his own. I think it's getting pretty clear the FA are all pretty much flawed. Luke is a rapist, Mark is a megalomaniac, Jack is a murderer, Kirk and Karl don't exactly have all their nazis in th bunker, Arkady is insane, Sirkka is avoidant, Kait's a torturer, KK sleeps with boys from Lambeth Road... Miki and Caz are the only ones who haven't been knocked a few pegs down yet, but I'll be surprised if they don't have skeletons in their closets as well. High horses should be in short supply.

But whatever happened to Connor? That'll be interesting.

I've forgotten to mention this before, but Zapata's Balls, Paul. The art that went with Luke's Rant (In E Minor) was absolutely sublime. A wonderful way of showing our Humble Narrator is spending waaaaay too much time inside his own skull. Maybe the hole will air out the place a little.

My point was that Jack knew what he was getting into. It's not like he's the blameless victim and Sirkka's just walking away from him, which is what seemed to be implied.

Again, intent to kill. Even without a shot being fired it's simple to prove he intended to... and that Jack willingly aided him by providing the weapon.

The thing that made most of the past few weeks is the (relative) urgency in which everything happened. Luke found raping a girl, Mark showing up, Luke escaping, the storm, all of it happening quite quickly, and not allowing for a proper discussion. So I'll agree with the above: none of this underlying stuff has been addressed because of things getting in the way. But now that stuff does indeed need to be addressed, and Luke was--in his long-winded, self-righteous way--attempting to address them up until the point he got brained by a chair. Now that nobody is in immediate danger from anything but personal, local retribution/vengeance, maybe they'll start to address these things.

Also, it's equally possible KK is continuing the zombie theme of Remove the Head - Destroy the Brain with the chair maneuver.
