Editing to add: it wasn't animals, unless animals have learned to use clippers.
The black raspberry was cut with some sorta blade at a steep angle, about half an inch from the ground. The plant is nowhere to be found.

My lemon-balm plant is missing as are several herbs which were rather bedraggled, and I was planning on replacing.
