The new 65DaysOfStatic (We were exploding anyway) is excellent. Much better than the previous one in my opinion. In the same vein, Holy Fuck's second album (Latin) is very very good too. I quite like Owen Pallett's solo album (Heartland), I haven't listened to it enough though. And the new Gogol Bordello (Trans-continental hustle) is good too. Produced by Rick Rubin. I also just got a very interesting 2 CDs Alva Noto compilation (For 1+2) but this particular edition might only have been released here in Japan though...
And it's from last year so it doesn't count but I discovered this band by accident a few weeks ago and really, really like their stuff : Amaailman Vasarat - Huuro Kolkko. They call themselves the finnish prophets of fictional world music, or kebab-kosher-jazz-film-traffic-punk-music with a unique scandinavian acoustic touch. And it's even better than that.
Besides everything already mentioned, the new Titus Andronicus (The Monitor) and a remix put out by Astronautilus and DJ Fishr Price (DANCEHALLHORNSOUND!!!!) are both liable to melt the way I've been playing them on my ipod. The new LCD Soundsystem (This Is Happening) was, unfortunately, a disappointment and not on par with Sound of Silver whatsoever. What a shame. Although what I have been listening to (although this might be biased fan-wank) is the Homestuck soundtrack, particularly volume 4. That's right, a webcomic with a soundtrack. You can check it all out streaming at homestuck.bandcamp.com
Cosmogramma and I'm New Here for sure. Also Butter by Hudson Mohawke, Crush Depth by Chrome Hoof, Music From The Tannhauser Gate by Mr Loop, Summer Knows... A Darker Shade of Grey by Loki, and although it's a 6-tracker, Bite Marks by Eaters gets played on a daily basis (not just a plug for my label - they were one of my favourite bands before we signed them!!)
Have tried to stay more on top of current releases this year. My favourites so far:
Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave John Zorn - In Search of the Miraculous John Zorn - Dictee/Liber Novus Autechre - Oversteps Flying Lotus - Cosmagramma The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter
I really wish I liked Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back, but many of the string arrangements simply don't work. Some of the reciprocal versions have been interesting - I liked David Byrne's cover of "I Don't Remember", and am keen on hearing Eno's take on "Don't Break This Rhythm".
The only new albums I've bought this year have been Jakob Dylan's WOMEN & HORSES, Butch Walker's I LIKED YOU BETTER WHEN YOU HAD NO HEART and Johnny Cash's AMERICAN VI. All three are great, although largely not to the taste of the Whitechapel crowd, I suspect.
To my surprise, I'm finding it difficult to love the new Los Campesinos! record. Laura Marling's second album also didn't really work for me.
As it stands, Crystal Castles (II) and There Is Love In You by Four Tet are the only records that wowed me this year. I've yet to listen to and digest the new Broken Social Scene and Hold Steady efforts, however...
If we're including EPs: Ramadanman's self-titled, James Blake's CMYK and Stridulum by Zola Jesus.
