Reading "Midwich Cuckoos" by John Whyndham, on various children born after an alien visitation, I noticed some similarities between the "common consciousness" shared by male (and female) cuckoos and the "package" to which the Freakangel refer to. The Midwick Cuckoos don't have individual personalities as the Freakangels have. Freakangels are, also, very different in abilities and moral vision and there's often conflict among them. How can they share the same "package", whatever that is?
And it's possible there are other Freakangel Groups in the world, like there were many cuckoos groups in the novel?

The Freakangels' story is a direct homage to The Midwich Cuckoos. In fact, one of the early taglines/descriptions of it was "What if the Midwich Cuckoos had grown up to be disaffected twentysomethings?"

@ TheEndsOfInvention, yeah i think X-Men was informed by Sci Fi books of the time it was created. Persecuted Mutants are common fare in sci fi of the time like the PK Dick short story 'The Golden Man' so I guess Stan Lee was soaking up the themes of mutant persecution when he wrote it.

I have no clue if it's Warren's reasoning or not but Violets/purples are often associated with creativity and imagination, which suits the story, I think. Gold's often very, very commonly used in books to symbolize something 'not quite human' and he might've wanted to stay away from that. Purple's also gold's opposite color on a color wheel. Or he might've just thought it would be neat.
-just my $0.02

I always figured it was an Indigo children reference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigo_children

Indigo children is a pseudo-scientific label given to children who are claimed to possess special, unusual and/or supernatural traits or abilities. The idea is based on New Age concepts developed in the 1970s by Nancy Ann Tappe. The concept of indigo children gained popular interest with the publication of a series of books in the late 1990s and the release of several films in the following decade. A variety of books, conferences and related materials have been created surrounding belief in the idea of indigo children and their nature and abilities. These beliefs range from their being the next stage in human evolution or possessing paranormal abilities such as telepathy to the belief that they are simply more empathic and creative than their peers.
