When the Miami Herald's (long defunct) Tropic Magazine started publishing his cartoons the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the Letters page went on for months! This was in the '80s, when he was first becoming better known, and it was glorious, simply glorious. And yes, he often made me cringe, too, usually a good indicator that I had sacred cows that needed tending.
Wow. Shit. Reading Callahan at a far too early age is part of why I am who I am. I think about him every time I get into a discussion about offensive humor, because he's one of the primary figures who taught me what it's for.
