    Okay, I apologize, but I am rather new to forums. But an interesting idea came up when it comes to styles of humor. What are everybody's view on American humor and how does it compare to English style?

    English humor is making a joke out of a really bad situration. But i find American humor is very simple and bland also it very in your face unlike english humor. This especially applys to comic books as the english style is so different to the American style.

    Well... my immediate reaction to this would be: Sacha Baron Cohen.

    That said... when I think of comedy I like (which is very little), I think of Rowan Atkinson and I suppose John Cleese, but that's probably largely a function of my age and what people were into when I was in college.

    When I lived in England, I saw Eddie Izzard doing an interview on some daytime talk show.

    He was telling the hosts how well received he is in the US, and they were shocked. One of them said something like "Americans get subtle humor?"
    I was irate. I wanted to just slap the TV.

    I wanted to yell at her... "YES, you idiot! We have lots of subtle humor! You just didn't notice it because IT'S FUCKING SUBTLE!!"

    They're both good! I prefer well constructed American humor, though, such as Eddie Murphy's Raw, John Leguizamo's Freak, anything by George Carlin, and of course, Richard Pryor. God forgive me, when Gallagher's not smashing things with a sledgehammer he's a pretty funny mofo. Those hour to two hour comedy shows are the best, where the comedian self references his or her act, bringing double the lawls.

    That said - most new standup I've seen sucks. Just a bunch of loosely connected punchlines with no heart, almost like FAMILY GUY: LIVE!. It's that or just being on stage being goofy for the sake of being goofy, which IS NOT funny. I am looking at you, Kristen Schaal.

    American comedy? Maybe he wasn't subtle, but: Bill Hicks. 'Nuff said.

    "American comedy" is a term not unlike "American beer" in its capacity to make me want to shit my pants.
