    Not sure where the best place for this is, or if it's been noted already, but I found this review of popular energy drinks on the web this evening and thought there might be some interest in it here.

    Here's the entry for Red Bull:

    Red Bull

    Produced by Red Bull North America, Inc.
    Red Bull was created in Thailand in the 1970's, under the name 'Krating Daeng'. In 1982 an Austrian entrepreneur named Dietrich Mateschitz discovered that the drink cured him of his jet lag, and between 1984 and 1987 reformulated the beverage along with the original manufacturer, founding Red Bull alongside partner Chaleo Yoovidhya. Today Red Bull is the most successful energy drink in the world.
    Ingredients: Taurine, Caffeine, Inositol
    Color: Closely resembles apple juice or possibly urine.
    Scent: Very sweet, flowery scent.
    Taste: It tastes like it wants desperately to be cloyingly sweet and then decides against it at the very last moment, turning slightly sour and bitter while leaving a sort of flowery aftertaste behind. This is what I imagine roses would taste like if they didn't taste like plants. I used to think people mixed this with vodka to make the vodka taste better, though now I'm not so sure it isn't the other way around.

    Buzz: Directly after drinking I felt a few little tingles, though honestly that could have just been excitement over starting this grand project. After another ten minutes, still feeling slightly tingly. A half hour after drinking the tingly is still around. Don't exactly feel full of energy, but definitely a bit more relaxed.

    I used to drink a ton of Red Bull, and I've probably tried just about every new energy drink on the market over a few year period when they first got popular. However, I've since quit caffeine entirely and I feel a lot better for it. I was just as tired and bitter when I was chugging back RB and espresso as I am now, except now I have more money to spend on toys and books.

    I found a rather funny website reviewing energy drinks a while back... you can check it out here. I actually laughed pretty hard at some of the entries on that particular site...

    I'm rather fond of the sugar-free version of bawlz. The regular version of it -and many other energy drinks- upsets my stomach. But I keep on buying them because I like the packaging! The variety of designs are rather intriguing.

    I love regular Bawlz myself, like Roo I can't stomach much of the other energy drinks, especially after having taken shots of run and LOST Juiced and then hugging the toilet the rest of the night, memorable birthday that was.

    V drinks arent bad. They taste more like a softdrink, give you that kick and are a little cheaper than Red Bull.

    I was amused, on my recent and first trip to the States, to find Red Bull sold in pint tins. I'm surprised Warren hasn't moved there on that basis alone.

    When i was heavily caffeinated, I tried lots, most of which were completely repulsive. I ended up drinking sugar-free Rockstar, which was still vile...

    Then I bought a novelty one in a pink can called "You Go Girl" - and humiliatingly, it was by far the most palatable one I'd tried. I was slightly appeased when my sister independently determined the same thing. Slightly. Now I cut out the middle man and just spend my money on crack - more economical.

    I'm a Red Bull guy, for the most part, with the occasional Rock Star when needed. Due to this thread, I tried a black Sparks. Now I can't feel my gums....

    I feel compelled to try all energy concoctions, and I regret it about 95% of the time. My liquid of choice however is Lo-carb Monster. (Preferably in the "B F C", 34 oz. can)

    Lo Carb Monster

    I prefer the Lo-carb because of the lighter flavor and more bite, and with the amount I imbibe my pancreas wouldn't be able to handle the sugar...)

    Dickens

    Dickens "Energy Cider" was the first real energy drink I had, and though I can no longer find it, I really, really wish I could. Mostly because the effect was over quick - I don't like feeling jittery for hours on end. Also, one of the key ingredients was - (in the immortal words of Dave Barry) I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP - Horny Goat Weed. Supposed to increase virility and "appetite." Don't know if it actually works, since I stopped being able to find it when I was 17, but an intriguing claim nonetheless.

    Tastes like orange soda, injected with a healthy dose of ROTS YOUR FUCKING TEETH. Effective, though.

    Monster is pretty great, Monster Chaos has a better taste though. It's orange flavour instead of that general energy flavour.

    Since I can't find those in the UK, I've gone through Tesco Kick (cheap & nasty) but works, and on to Relentless.

    Relentless' fruit flavour version is not as good as Monster's though, it tastes more like squash than juice, too sugary.

    One of the first energy drinks I had ever seen back about 10 years ago named Red Devil (I think it might have been a precursor to Red Bull, but I'm not sure). I used to pound 3 - 4 cans in a row, and as long as I kept myself in strenuous physical motion, I suffered no ill effects. If I stopped, it was like I was vibrating. I don't know if regulations were put in place since then to limit how much of what ingredient can go into a drink, but I remember it being harsh. (I do know Monster stopped putting Vitamin C in the drink because it could potentially react negatively to one of the other ingredients)

    Rockstar Zero Carb is one of the few common drinks I've found with yerba mate in it. Tastes pretty good too, particularly for a no-carb beverage.

    i'm a fan of the java monster mean bean. It disguises the horrid taste of energy drinks without alcohol with the taste of a good vanilla coffee.
