The Telegraph reports that "a massive explosion of the sun" (note for the hysterical: the sun has NOT exploded) is sending a cloud of electrically charged particles (AKA a coronal mass ejection) headed earthwards.

Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.

It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.

(and I've read elsewhere that the lightshow might even be visible in the UK)

    Telegraph article

Somewhat less hysterical New Scientist article

Any advice from Whitechapel astronomy geeks on what to look for (and where) would be most welcome. If indeed such a thing will be visible from Brighton.

Warren's death ray actually worked. Try a higher setting, Eel-lord. All you did was interfere with some satellites. Or was that the plan all along?...

Would be nice to see this, I'm about a hundred miles north of lazarus so I'm also looking forward to the astronerds on visibility/advice on how to view.

So long as the BBC weather forecast tomorrow has "violent space weather" icons over the south coast then I'll be happy

Warren's special telephone connects straight to God.

After informing Warren of Violent Space Weather, God says: "is there anything else I can do for you, sir?"

    Sun spunk. Great.

Hopefully it will have been cleaned out of the atmosphere by the time I fly cross-country on Friday.
