So there is a small but not zero chance I may be visiting Toronto very briefly during the upcoming week; I'm visiting the family in Buffalo for a week and haven't been up to Toronto in over 15 years - but when I was in high school we used to drive up there all the time to visit Silver Snail and shop for used books on Queen Street (Buffalo did not have anywhere near as good used book stores back then).

I'm curious to see how the city has changed in a decade and a half. If I can get the time to drive up, I will - it might be Tuesday or it might be Friday. I'd only be there for a very quick few hours, probably drive up in the late morning and head back at night.

I know there are quite a few residents of Toronto and environs here, so two questions:

    1) What should I see? What's cool that wasn't around 15 years ago? Anything fantastic going on during the week?

    2) Anyone want to meet in actual physical proximity space?

(I am packing my passport right now... never needed one of those back in the day. Ah the fruits of post 9/11 American Global Friendliness...)

    Hey there, Oddbill!

Shame you aren't coming for the last week in August, as Fan Expo will be upon us then.

As for stuff to see, I don't actually know. Sadly, as a local, I don't hit many tourist spots. But the distillery distrcit and danforth area are always big treats. And you'll find that Yonge/Dundas has changed quite a bit (with, sadly, the non-existence of Sam The Record Man). Queen street, sadly, has been attacked by the mainstream fashion outlets and my favorite book store, Pages, is no more. But west of Spadina on Queen still has it's spice.

And if you're around I'll try and make an appearance. I might have work or I might have prior engagements, but I'll try,

Start on the 20th, The Ex will be open, which is a huge three week fair kind of dealee that is put on every summer. There might be some shows and attractions there to check out, depending on the time and your interests. I personally will be working at the arcade there most of the time. I'm not too familiar with tourists attractions beyond that, as I'm only a resident of the GTA.

    Hey there, Oddbill!

Let's see, what's to see in the T-Dot? The crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum is new, corner of Avenue Road and Bloor St. Um, the Bata shoe museum? The Distillery district is nice. Queen Street still retains some charm. College Street as well, some good bookstores (Dragon Lady comics). You've of course been to Honest Ed's? Pop into Suspect Video (right next door) and the Beguiling (one of the best comic stores in North America, I'm crapping you negative. Say hi to Peter Birkemoe and the Chris Butcher of Earth Prime.)

Lemme know when and where and I'll be there!

I'm moving to Toronto next month. Might run into some of you at the comic shop sometime.

I'd second the suggestion to explore Queen Street west of Spadina: best part of the city, I think, but be sure to go during the day when the shops are open. Past dark, if you're into live music, there are a few interesting venues that showcase Toronto's amazing music scene. I might be at the Gladstone Hotel next Tuesday to see Allie Hughes.

Thanks for the info everyone - I'm in Buffalo right now, and it's looking like if I can swing it, it will be Friday. I'll know for sure on Wednesday.

I'd probably have to head back around 9pm, so No really late nights, and I'd be driving across the border, so no drunkenness - but I'm sure a beer wouldn't hurt.

Plus think of the SPIT crossover photos we all could generate!

Check out The Beguiling. Its a comic shop, and while the 2nd floor is all superheroes, first floor is all indie stuff.
Plus, it's around the corner from Honest Eds, which is like the worlds craziest dollar store, which you should also check out (but don't go in if you are in a hurry. It'll take a few minutes minimum to find a way out)

I've been working way, way too much, so meeting up with some people I barely know but think I would like sounds like fun.
Confirm the time and day you can meet up, and I'll throw out a place and see if people don't want to join up.

(there are several decent places around Honest eds now that I think about it)

The Green Room! It's a total dive and sadly it may be too ridiculously busy, but it's a great place for a drink and a hang out!

The neighborhood around Honest Ed's is called the Annex and there are loads of bars and restaurants around there. (One stretch of Bloor Street has like eight sushi restaurants. Seriously, who needs that many sushi restaurants? Maybe you do and if you do, it's right between Bathurst and Spadina.) I used to work at Book City in the Annex for ten years so I know that part pretty well. Also, it's on the subway line so there's that.

So it looks like I can do this on Friday. My current plan is to leave Buffalo around 11AM Friday. I'm guessing that'll get me to Toronto around 1 or 1:30.

Based on what everyone has said here I'll probably head over to the Annex and check out Honest Ed's and the Beguiling, and just kick around the neighborhood.

The Green Room is right near there. I don't know everyone's work schedules, but want to try meeting at the Green Room around 5PM?

I can go with almost any meeting time, just submitting 5PM as a starting point.

@Oddbill - upstairs or downstairs at the Green Room? And for those wondering "where's the Green Room?", it's in the alley behind Bloor Street between Barton and Brunswick.

I work til five then I death-race 3000 across town on my bike, then I watch Coronation Street so I could be there around 7:15 or so.

I'd like to say that upstairs in the greenroom will be quieter, but I haven't been there since it got incredibly hip around 2003ish and it became noisy. Hopefully, time and a couple of health inspector scares as made it a dive again haha.

Green Room address: 296 Brunswick Avenue

    What it looks like:

Probably won't be there before 6pm, but I should be able to make it.
And I'll take another stab at actually adding a photo to my account here so people know what I look like.
Or, maybe I'll go old school and just pin a red rose to my lapel.

(mind you, I'd need to find a rose to to do that....and something with lapels)

I'll be driving up Friday. Hope I see you all at the Green Room - I'll be there around 5 and will hang out until you all appear!

If you'd like to txt me to find out if people have come, send me an email at bill (at) oddbill (dot) com and I'll reply with my cell number.

I'll also post here and on my twitter account (I'm oddbill there too) when I reach the Green Room.

I'm typing this from my phone, so can't link a picture here, but there are many photos of me at my flickr, linked to my profile here, if you are looking to recognize someone there.
I probably won't be wearing the glasses, but probably will be sitting upstairs with a sketchpad and pens, trying to look casual while checking everyone who enters out.

    I'm in.
Likely around 6:15, so you'll have at least one person to talk to.
    Anyone else confirmed?
I promise a round or two is on me.

Like I said, I'll be there a little after seven. (Gotta watch Coronation Street. Laugh all you like but Tony Gordon's about to confess murder to Roy Cropper.)

I guess I'll just look for the ruggedly handsome fellas sitting with Robin.

    Upstairs at the Green Room,right?
