Freakangels is my favourite, story and characters are really the best, and the beautiful art of Paul (Get well soon, Paul) makes Freakangels a comic masterpiece.
I must say the second favourite is "Fell": Feral City is a magnificently portrayed evil-town,and Fell has some, might I say freakangelic quality? He's gentle, subtle, strong but you can sense an inner vulnerability. Kaitlyn would have liked him. and obviously, Fell has some dark secret we are yet to know (the flawed hero with something to hide and/or to atone for seems a recurring feature in Ellis's stories, see also Eljah Snow in Planetary).I quite loved Crooked Little Vein, its satire and the corrosive humour, not to mention the description of sexual practices that would have made poor Karl scream in horror: "Aauggh! Too much information! Arkady, erase my memory. please!" I love the characters of the protagonit and Trix.
I've yet to read "Transmetropolitan"but I will.

I just read for the first time the Solar story Ellis and Robertson did together a while back. I gotta say, I loved the hell out of it. It actually rates pretty damn high on my favorite Ellis stories.
Doc Sleepless and SuperGod are my preferred works by Ellis. I know most will say Transmet and while Transmet is about as perfect as you get (the writing is superb and the art is glorious, Darick Robertson is a God) but for where I am in my life and what I am thinking about: Doc Sleepless and SuperGod are it.

His run on Stormwatch was what originally got me into Warren's work, so that will always hold a special place in my heart. I also really enjoy Transmetropolitan, Planetary, The Authority, and Black Summer. Those are usually my go to books when i'm trying to get someone to read comics who usually doesn't.

Actually, I prefer Shivering Sands, and The Bad Signal. Cranky, theory-testing sleep and drug deprived Warren in my ear at night is the one I like best. His twitter, too, while we're along that vein.

Black Summer was the first comic that actually made me feel something, with the Tom in Issue 3. I've read BIG EVENT BOOKS that MEAN THINGS, but Issue 3 of Black Summer was HOLY SHIT SOMETHING JUST HAPPENED AND IT MEANT SOMETHING.

So I'll have to go with Black Summer.

I like Fell because it tickles me fanboy innards, and pretty much anything that's come out in the past couple of years (Avatar stuff anyway, I don't regularly read Marvel books, even when Mr. Ellis is involved) is damn fine work. I just really need to work on things from before I was really reading his books.

Crooked Little Vein & Aetheric Mechanics are on their way to my doorstep as we speak. Haven't read them yet.

My first Warren Ellis read was my favorite run on DOOM 2099 where Doom finally took over the U.S. I was really sad that didn't last; I really enjoyed it. It probably is one of my favorites. Of course I love Transmet, one of the girls I dated back in the early noneties was an avid Transmet fan, and she (along with Spider) brought me back in to the fold of collecting comics, this time as an adult, so those two will probably always take up spots in my favorites list.

Desolation Jones was one of the first books I read after getting back into comics as an adult (the first one was Paul Pope's Batman: Year 100). I got lucky in that I happened to choose good books without guidance. Since then I've read it over and over and I still love it.

...also, Planetary and Fell I found to be particularly amazing.

I think I treat Warren's works like drug hits, and they return the favour by expanding my mind and altering my consciousness a little more each time. So usually my favourite is the last one I read.

But my favourite at the moment is Frankenstein's Womb because a) Google's Doodle has informed me that Mary Shelley was born 213 years ago today, and b) I made one of my brothers buy it for me on his way to the pub and I proceeded to read it between games of pool, intriguing my dad and my brothers. So it has fond memories beyond the book itself.

I continue to enjoy reading comics in the pub, the last I read there was Scott Pilgrim Vol. 6.

The idea of a really smart guy who deliberately tries to make himself into a super villain to accomplish something (save the world, or destroy it, I dunno, and I dunno if it matters), or nothing at all (if he's basically running a big prank to amuse himself) and we don't know which is a mind blowing concept.

CROOKED LITTLE VEIN is my comfort read. When I am tired of everything else or just particularly annoyed at the world, I read it. Beyond his blog entries, which I suppose drew me into reading the book to begin with, CROOKED LITTLE VEIN stands as my introduction to Warren's work. While I do enjoy Warren's work in comics, I have never had a strong interest in the medium, which leads to a preference for SHIVERING SANDS, DO ANYTHING, and AVAILABLE LIGHT. When I finally get around to reading COME IN ALONE, it will likely go beside them.

Though they may not be on top, I do love both TRANSMETROPOLITAN and FELL and I've been enjoying SUPERGOD. Never miss FREAKANGELS either.

I have a hidden spot for the 2099 universe, that was when I began to buy comic books, I got in the midde of the chaos of the age of apocalipsis and mistook deadpool for spiderman in a cover!

I think I have most of the 2099 titles, and what really stands out there is the Doom 2099 of warren ellis. If i dont remember worng (might be!!) it was when doom conquered america. good stuff. At least in my memory!

Hey, I second Jack. The Authority and Planetary were game changers, but I have some fond memories of Warren's early Marvel work too. I loved the 2099 books, Worldengine or his Excalibur run with Carlos Pacheco.

One thing that comes to my mind is a Dv8 issue... I've forgotten the details but Michael Lopez was on pencils and there's this panel with a girl lying on a bed because of... some drugs, maybe? Back then, I thought It was a breathtaking story. I should look for that one and give It a reread.

city of silence..just readed it once. Have to read it more.

I also just remembered a brief run in THOR mid 90's....again in the same touching period of being totally unprotected to Ellis' radioactive exposure I went to find a story where nord things die and the hero of the story (not thor, some constantine wannabe, or i recall it like that....) was smashed to death.

This weekend I just went and purchaused Crecy and Frankentein´s Womb....just wow, if someone says he has lost the touch lately, they should read that comics...

Interesting choices! I'm feeling the almost overhwelming love for Transmet and Dok S.

I have special love for

SWITCHBLADE HONEY - I find it endlessly re-readable, like a great short story.
ATMOSPHERICS - as above - a great, compact story with grit, suspense and cracking dialogue
IGNITION CITY - love the blending of pulp space heroes and frontier grime. Also, 'sammich!'
EXTREMIS - So slick it hurts, singlehandedly responsible for the resurgence of Iron Man IMHO
BLACKGAS - so nasty, dark and horrible... ushered in a new era of zombiedom
DESOLATION JONES - conceptually speaking, my favourite comic of Warren's. Just such a riveting character.

Transmet, Planetary and FreakAngels I consider in the 'epic' or 'classic' category - unimpeachable works of passionate, committed brain candy. Reading Warren Elllis made me smarter. For that reason, I also have to include the Bad Signal emails, particularly from around 2003 / 4. Opened my eyes to a lot of shit.

I came to Transmet late, had read a bunch of other, later stuff first - had avoided it for fear of being too influenced by it. I definitely remember very fondly the day the guy in my LCS talked me into buying Vol 1. I never looked back. For me it's the apex and the swansong of cyberpunk.

Also, Nextwave makes me happy in my pants.

I have to admit, Jack, I find the three primary characters all immensely sympathetic, in their own ways (outside of Snow's seeming calm as the building above them - and all its occupants - are deathrayed into smokey oblivion, though, really, what's he supposed to do to stop it?), and the majority of the guest-star focal characters are good people who've been violated and wronged beyond anything acceptable. What's not to empathise with?

As far as plot goes... there are some issues/stories that I am uncertain as to the theme/concept being looked at (if there is one), but in each individual issue and for the series overall, I never felt I didn't know what the plot was. The narrative is clear, as are the desires/drives of the characters. But, maybe I glossed over something you honed in on.

One thing I found annoying and then harmlessly amusing, when Planetary was wrapping up, was a handful of online reviews/retrospectives insisting the book lost its way when the characters "suddenly" became proactive and humane. As I remember it, we had maybe three full issues before Snow forces the organization to aggressively fund and aid, as well as uncovering and documenting. (They're treating and housing Brass from the end of issue one on, actually, so we just aren't having the aiding and abetting announced to us, I guess, before Wilder.)

As for Doctor Sleepless, maybe he is an homage to all the mad scientists in early Sci-fi (expecially comics). The difference is Doktor Sleepless freely admits to being insane!
I think "Nurse Igor" will be his doom, eventually. She's a ruthless and dedicated killer. Wait till Doc Insomniac discovers a certain thing about her...
Talking on Warren's work in general, pone sees some constants...

1) HE'S BACK! (Spider Jerusalem, Doktor Sleepless, Fell, Mark Fox in freakangels)
2) He (or They) got a dark secret (Freakangels, Fell, Jonas, and Dr Sleepless)
3)Blood, blood, blood
4)Women are though (Anna Mercury, Down) and/or dangerous (the Nurse) or smarter than men( Women Freakangels are, on average, more intelligent and assertive than their male brothers.Connor being an exception)

Planetary, Fell, Transmetropolitan are my favorites. Really enjoying Freakangels. Also enjoyed both Red and Reload.

I haven't read Anna Mercury yet. Favorite Graphic Novel of his is Orbiter with Colleen Doran.

Really am liking Captain Swing. Hope there is more on that after the first mini. Fun concept.

The only thing that I can say I hate of his is Global Frequency. Just wasn't for me.

Planetary is probably my favorite, if I had to pick.

Then Transmetropolitan, Doktor Sleepless, and Fell probably follow pretty closely for me. Although I really dug the examination of the modern superhero in the 1-2-3 punch of Black Summer/No Hero/SuperGod; I thought he did a wonderful job with breaking down what our society calls "super-humans" (whether it's satirical, or post-post-modernism, or however you wanna interpret it). I really think Newuniversal is pretty underrated, also. I like some good 'ol Gravel laying on my desk. It's hard to deny Extremis' influence. And, looking back, his influence on the entire Marvel U w/ his Thunderbolts run is hard to ignore. His "the bad guys as good guys but still not good" led directly into that whole "Dark Reign" thing or whatever it was, as well as influenced the creation of books like Dark Avengers. Desolation Jones is easy to forget about, but I love that book and idea. And Freakangels has a special spot in my heart.

But yeah, long story short: Planetary is my fav. Haha

I read 2/3rd of the ultimate galactus trilogy and it left me out cold....might be cos I don like the ultimate universe at all, it's entertaining but i will really run and put it on the very minor works from mr. ellis (that make them more valuable from lots of work from other writers but you get what i mean)...maybe once i got to read ultimate extinction things will get better? dunno...

Transmet, Nextwave, Planetary, and Desolation Jones. that G.I. Joes cartoon he did also warms the cockles of my bitter little heart.

but transmet especially. i was just barely too innocent/niave/something the first time i read it, and it blew my fucking brain. in a good way.

didn't dare buy the trades while i still lived with my mom, but i rewarded myself with them when i got my first apartment/job/taste of self sufficiency.

I keep forgetting the Apparat Singles. The original 4. Pure intravenous Ellis at his self indulgent best. I can't even pick a favorite among then. They are all brilliant. Many of the same themes he riffed on in Planetary, but for grown ups. On acid.
