The only thing I try to do consciously is that I never call a singular comic book a 'comic.' It's always 'comic book.' Without 'book,' it's always comics, with an 's.' This is because I once told my boss I needed to use vacation time to go to the New York Comic Convention and he thought I was really into stand-up.

And the "formal" name for comics here is Revistas Em Quadrinhos, roughly translated to Panel Magazines (actually, "quadrinhos" means "little squares frames", which is how we actually refer to comic panels, so Little Frames Magazines).

EDIT: lower in the thread, DC corrected me -- somehow (i.e. mental retardation) I overlooked that "quadrinho" is diminutive for "quadro" (frame), not "quadrado" (square).

We call it "banda desenhada", the same as in France "bande dessinée" (drawn strip) and in Japan it's "manga" (whimsical pictures?) and in Italy it's "fumetti" (which comes from "smoke" of the thought balloons) and in Spain it's "tébeo" (the name came from "TBO", a magazine that published comics in the 20's) or "historieta" (which is a derogative term for "story").

I remembered another word the Spanish use for comics which is... banda deseñada. Damn those French, they wanted for everyone to speak what they speak.

in spanish we call them "cuentos" which translates to "tales" but everyone says cuentos when referring to magazines.
Probably depends on the region. Banda deseñada is used in Galiza (north of Spain, closer to Portugal) whereas other regions call them comics. It's almost an interesting question, but most of the time, such things need to evolve fairly naturally to not sound forced and pretentious, rather than be imposed under pressure. If an idea has some measure of "fitness", it will catch on and spread, as Nice Prof. Dawkins points out. It needs to appeal to enough potential hosts/vectors to go anywhere, though. If it's just jarring and daft, then it will fall on its face, often.

Edit: Forgot to say- the suave Mr. Ellis has an excellent point, that what you call a publication affects how the author and readers approach it, to a degree. However, if nowt else, "comics" has become so dilute that it has lost a lot of its baggage, simply referring to something mostly made of toothsome illustrations and carefully enbubbled(tm) text. The General Public can just about get their heads around "comic" and "graphic novel" (the latter is thicker and less floppy, as far as they're concerned). Caution would have to be exercised if attempting anything too confusingly racy, lest heads assplode. He didn't kill his victims, but made found art using their stunned, blinking bodies and his bright red food dish.

My somewhat stepmother has a feline night torturer that likes to catch mice or lizards then drop them in the bathtub so that she can have her own little arena in which she can torture her victims at leisure, seeing as they can't get out.
