Finally broke down and joined the new millennium by buying a phone that has the ability to communicate with the world at large. Specifically a Samsung Vibrant, Galaxy S in other markets. So what apps are people using that just enrich their lives or at least pass the time in an amusing way? Right now I am pretty much just rocking news sources and public radio. And of course the tricorder app. Anything else I should definitely get?

(NOTE FROM WARREN: I'VE SPECIFIED THE OS IN QUESTION IN THE TITLE.)

i'm on a nokia and i run on a very limited data plan, so different platform and my stuff is mostly offline or runs on minimum bandwidth.

listed from most used to least used:

some sort of gps navigation software (dunno whats on your platform.. tomtom maybe? very very useful)
offline wikipedia (usually goes with an ebook reader. seemed like a good thing to have in your pocket in case of desaster)
an app that lets me use my phone as a webcam on the pc (not useful if you have a webcam on the pc or use skype on the phone)
backtrack linux installed on the microSD card + microSD/USB adapter on my keyring (pc forensics keyring gadget? win)
something that can read qr-codes/beetags. doesnt get much use, tho
vnc-viewer. only makes sense if you have a machine on the net thats running a vnc server
a first aid "what to do" reference. may sound kinda pointless, but it was for free.

if you're running a wordpress blog, you might want to copy warrens setup with posterous, that seems to work pretty well.

and the obvious:
a proper browser (you may already have one installed. compare opera mobile)
depending on data plan, you might want a good mail client as well?
a way to sync with your desktop browser/mail/calendar/todo things
some sort of IM program + twitter client
lots of music/audiobooks and a tool that speaks audioscrobbler to pipe the mobile playlist into last.fm

I've had my MyTouch for a while and I love the Bluetooth File Transfer. It makes transferring things between phones quite easy. The only snag I've found is it won't play nice with iPhones.

The work email program that came with my phone was awful so I spent $20 and bought Touchdown which syncs better with my exchange that I thought it would. Sometimes email will hit my phone before it hits my Outlook.

I also have to agree with epalicki. Google Sky Map, Pandora, and Shazam are a must for fun. I hadn't seen the NPR one. I may have to check that out.

This thread is brilliant. Thank you, everyone who has made suggestions. I'm quite new to the Android game, so this has been very helpful.

My pieces for the pot:

Drop and Give Me Twenty is a part of my workout routine for the next four weeks.
Gigbox is okkkk ... it links in to your last.fm profile and finds gigs nearby/by your favourite artists. A good recommendations feature would tip this over into a great app.
Google Sky Map was the first AR-type app I ever used, and I was very impressed. Useless in London due to ambient/ light pollution, but wonderful to see where the stars should be.

S'it, so far. Really hoping this thread will help open my eyes to the big world out there.

I used to use a task killer, but after my friend pointed out that, given that the tasks you're most likely to be killing are those that auto-launch without you wanting them, they'll just be launching and getting killed, re-launching and re-killing, re-launching and re-killing... basically using up more processor than they would just sitting idle in the background. Watchdog Lite is a good app for checking in on what's using what and killing things if they go over on their CPU usage. It's also got a tiny widget so you don't have to open the whole thing. Since I've been using it, I've got an average of 25 things running and maybe 2% of CPU used at any given time. My battery life has also actually improved since quitting the task-killers.

Seesmic is a great Twitter client. I haven't tried the standard Twitter app in a while, but Seesmic has always been my preferred app. Skyfire is a great browser. Pretty fast, view the page as you would on a normal PC browser and, because things are rendered on their side of things first, you can watch most embedded videos without having to open an outside app or using a plugin.

For music, Slacker, Last.fm and Pandora all offer their own unique song sets, so it's not a bad idea to have them all. XiiaLive is great for streaming stations and can keep a favorites list. I prefer MortPlayer over the default player for the same reason my last three mp3 players have been Rockboxed -- it organizes your music by folder, not tags. If you listen to many podcasts, Google Listen is perfect. It's integrated into Google Reader, so if you're using that to handle your RSS feeds already, you can run across a podcast on your PC, subscribe in GReader and it'll instantly be on your phone waiting for you. I used to use Slacker for podcasts (found a few of my current favorites on there, actually), but given that it streams instead of downloading, I'd occasionally get dropped mid-show and not be able to auto-pickup where I left off. They might have fixed this in recent updates, but given the advantages of GListen, I'll just stick with that.

The Kindle app is great. Just about to finish Guillermo del Toro's The Strain on there. WordPlayer is good for open ebooks. I read Cory Doctorow's Little Brother on it much faster than I would have were it on actual paper. If you download comics, Droid Comic Viewer is very nice. I plowed through a ten volume manga with no hassle from it. It even gives you the option of where to start reading - top left for western, top right for asian, which comes in handy depending on what you're reading.

Wapedia formats Wikipedia pages to fit your screen perfectly.

Subsonic lets me stream the 80+GB of music I have on my home computer to my phone. Well worth the cash I spent on it.

Scanner Radio lets me listen to local police bands on my phone. Weather alert and you want to know what's coming? Sirens go screaming by and you want to know what's up? It's for you.

Kindle for Android and Audible for Android let me take my libraries with me.

Seesmic is my preferred Twitter client. It's quite nice.

Calorie Counter lets me easily keep track of what I eat compared to how many calories I use. As a fat guy getting thinner for the past year, it's great.

Endomondo keeps track of my workouts, and how many calories I burn on them, which I can feed into Calorie Counter.

Dolphin HD Browser is by far the best browser I've come across.

ConnectBot (an SSH client) and WiFi Analyzer won't be useful to everyone, but I set up and secure networks often, so they're handy to have available all the time.

How cool is that?

Touiteur is my favorite twitter app:

andFTP has turned out to be handy several times:

Aldiko has been my ebook reader of choice for my phone but hasn't gotten much use since I was given a Nook. Still cool though.

Because I'm a D&D nerd, I love Dicebag:

Just because it's a purdy way to view your images, you should check out FloatingImage:

I freakin' LOVE Dropbox and squealed like a lil girl when it came out for Android:

I made all these QR codes with AppReferer:

Tasker is the most amazing app on the market in my opinion. You can completely customize your phone. It does have a steep learning curve, but you can just follow instructions that other people create as well.

(Sorry my "brilliant" idea made for such a GINORMOUS post.)

I don't use my phone for a lot other than texts/maps, so there aren't a ton of apps I use. But I really like these:

Tweetdeck - Cleaner and nicer looking than any other Twitter app I've tried on Android. And can bundle in your facebook/buzz feeds right into the timeline which makes it nice to just have the one app. Also the Android Facebook app is awful, so this is a nice replacement.

Chrome to Phone - Rarely used, but nice to have handy incase I want to continue reading an article on the go, or toss a map location over to my phone (tho I normally star a location on google maps and it is synced to my phone).

NYCMate - Downloads NYC train/bus maps to your phone for quick reference underground. Bus map is the key, for me.

Awesome Drop - Really neat app for wireless tossing files onto your SD card from your browser. Works great.

Instapaper has been a mainstay of mine for some time. It allows me not to lose and easily to read all the interesting articles I find and forget about. But now that I have integrated Evernote and Google Calendar into my personal organisation routines, I don't forget things, places, ideas, or appointments. Genuinely lifechanging.

Firefox Mobile's Sync feature allows seamless browsing continuity between your main browser and your mobile Firefox, which is a wonderful idea and works beautifully in practice. The downside is that FF Mobile doesn't do Flash. For me that's a showstopper; if I wanted a telephone which couldn't browse the web properly I'd have bought an iPhone. (I kid!)

Astro file reader, to keep track of what's eating all the drive space without plugging it into a computer.

Evernote is nice; dropbox turned out to be excessive.

Spotify, excellent both as regular music player and streaming service, as long as you make sure you run it in offline mode, and load playlists while in a wifi zone

RetroCam made nice little polaroidish pictures which fitted my blog format perfectly. Suddenly stopped working after an update. Haven't been able to make it work since.

GTasks plugs into your google calendar/mail tasklists. Simple, quick to do-list, with an interface better and more intuitive that google's own.

WiFi Manager; autosearch, ability to set up favourite spots as separate icons. Doesn't cover some forms of authentication, but those appear to be impervious to the whole android os anyway.

Google maps with the full pile of overlays; in five minutes, located two thai restaurants with reasonable toom yang kung and a vegan menu within ten minutes walk of a micro brewery. I'm in love.

AlarmDroid; fully customizable wakeup call; rings with custom mp3's, ringtones, or online radio stream. Can be set to require you to solve an arithemitic problem before it shuts up. Worked like a charm, but got incredibly frustrating.

The tattoo comes with the Peep twitter widget.

Used to run the Opera web browser, but haven't bothered to reinstall it after I had to reset the phone due to some weirdness I suspect was caused by that useless task killer program. I mostly just use the browser to read a couple of newsblogs, which I keep as start pages.

I got the same phone, though I suspect it is the 3G version and you have all 4 G's. I like my Samsung Galaxy S and I frequently get asked whether it is an iPhone and I am happy to reply that though it functions similarly I can swap out SIM cards, add more storage, and carry a replacement battery for heavy usage days. I recommend getting a spare battery, they are about 10 bucks on Amazon and worth it for when you are reliant on it for things like navigation or lots of calls and cannot plug in to top it up.
Google apps: Google Voice, Maps, Talk, Places, Navigation, Earth, Skymap, My Tracks ( I cycle a lot and it is cool to get an idea of where i have been and how far I went, my tracks is great for that)

General Apps: Meebo IM client, Dolphin browser is definitely the best, Advanced Task Killer (I use it only when performance is sluggish and I want a quick fix), Tumblr, DoubleTwist is a hell of a lot better than the stock music player but if you are a Mac user of if you have all of your music tied up in iTunes it is a frustrating experience to sync music to an Android phone, Barcode scanner, Kindle, HopStop is great if you live in an urban area for public transportation directions, Pandora and Slacker for Radio

Camera / photo related apps: These make up the lions share of apps for me since i am a photographer. Yes, I know, and I don't want to hear your fucking lecture. I always carry my real camera, which I should add for good measure is the exact same weight and dimensions as a cinder block and despite the fact that it is always attached to me like an extra limb made of pig iron it isn't always the right camera for the job but I cannot always have that with me AND carry one of my 20 odd different film cameras and even if I did it would almost certainly end up not being the one I want for the shot I am looking at or else the film type and speed would be no good for the situation. Using these apps is cheating and not nearly as satisfying as doing it right but I get some kind of approximation of the shot that I want but that I would usually walk away from because I cannot get it the way I want. Cheating, yes, but ok in my book.
Retro Cam is my go to. easy to use, mimics Holga/Diana, Russian Leica copies, Brownie, Polaroid, and a pinhole. it is fun but Square format only. Camera 360 has more modes, I don't like it as much but it is good for certain situations. Vignette is highly configurable, not as user friendly but really cool looks you can achieve with it. FX camera is ok, mostly for Polaroids, the other styles aren't that interesting.
These are the ones I am most familiar with, the ones I am experimenting with are LittlePhoto and Retro Styler (retroid) which shoots a Polaroid SX-70 style. Photographic light Meter is buggy but if they get it together then I can stop carrying a fucking separate light meter around with me when I shoot with an old film camera that doesn't have one built in. PicsPlz to edit a straight shot in post rather than commit to a style in-camera. Flickr Free so I can share my telephony photo genius with you fine folks in the Photography thread.
Games: Angry Birds has like 3 different variants now, Paper Toss is the greatest waster of time ever invented, NSoid and SNESoid emulate Nintendo and Super Nintendo and give you a chance to finish Super R-Type or Super Mario Brothers 2. The same developer makes emulators for Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 so if you can find roms then you can get your retro game nerdgasm on.

A ton of Google apps, obviously. The ones that were baked in originally are slowly being decoupled because the carriers aren't updating fast enough, so it's always worth getting the newest versions of gmail, maps, etc. Optional ones such as Reader, Chat, Voice, and Googles are ones I use a lot. Chrome to Phone is useful for the occasional need to punt things to the phone as I'm heading out the door.

Netflix is finally on android, but you should check if your device is supported.

Flixster / Movies is great for checking movie theater listings.

My Tracks is good for app for recording your biking/hiking/running. Recommend uploading data to strava.com afterwards.

Angry Birds, Robo Defense, and Alchemy are good games. I had Drop7 for iOS and it is a nice Tetris style game. If I'm ever bored enough, I'll shell out the $3 it costs and rebuy it.

Evernote is good for keeping track of ... notes. Advanced Task Killer, Barcode Scanner, Astro File Manager, SpeedTest, Playlist Alarm, Silent Boot similarly all just do what they say.

DoubleTwist for managing music and Ringdroid for very simple ringtone creation. Google Music just came out so still playing with that. Amazon MP3 (which my carrier makes mandatory) similarly just became useful with their new cloud streaming storage instead of just being an interface into their MP3 store.

I troll on here too much... used to post a lot I swear... but... I had to comment.
I've had my Droid for about 8 months now... the original Motorola Droid (on Verizon) so I've had plenty of time to play.
I don't download too many games, because the original Droid lags out a bit too much for my tastes, but I do still play Dragon Hunter, Stupid Zombie, Angry Birds, and Alchemy. Alchemy is fun as hell as a time waster when standing in line or in a waiting room at a doctor or the DMV.

As far as non-game apps go...

Urbanspoon - To help me decide where to eat if I'm going out.
Machinima - For gaming whatsits... and Mortal Kombat Legacy.
Fandango - The check movie times.
Strava - A biking app to keep track of my rides, how long and how far.
Mixology - For drinking, 'nuff said.
Kayak - For flights and other travel stuff, it searching all of the travel sites to find you the best deal.
About 20 Soundboards... I like movies...
Boing Boing - Self Explanatory.
PB Tech Digest - A Tech news rss aggregate.
Ghost Radar - Obviously fake, but fun. Tells you if there are ghosts nearby.
EMF Detector - Once again, probably fake (who knows with all the hardware in these things) but fun.
Lightning Bug - White noise generator, helps me sleep sometimes.
Ebay and Paypal
MtG Tracker - Lets me build Magic: The Gathering decks, and store info on them.
MunchLevel - A Level counter for Munchkin... I suck at math.
Color Flashlight - Flashlight app that can do strobe, colors, spirals, and other amusing things.
Verizon Data Usage
Wikitude - It's a GPS/"what's around me" app, that is working on putting out a GPS that uses your camera to actually give you a HUD... awesome.
Google Docs, Talk, Calendar, Gmail, Goggles, Books, Earth, Sky Map, Translate
Wordpress
Trillian - For instant messaging.
MoonPhase - Shows me the phase of the moon, has a nice widget.
Twitter and Facebook
IMDB - I look up stuff on their site all the time, so it's useful.
Slacker Radio - I hate Pandora, and Slacker is just... fun.
SoundHound - Basically Shazam.
Kindle, Amazon Mp3, Barcode Scanner, Foursquare (never use it, but I have it... *shrug*), last.fm,
ING - For my bank account.
Haunted Sights - A list of supposedly Haunted locations... it's actually kinda useful if you're into that sort of thing.
Horror Clock - Uses "horror like" fonts for a clock widget.
gStrings - A guitar tuner, and it's actually really accurate.
Mr. Number Caller ID - Uses it's database to see if anyone who uses the app has the phone number that's trying to call you to tell you who it might be. Only useful if you agree to share your contacts with it, but it's very secure and private, so...
My Tracks - Another biking app for keeping track of how long I'm riding, etc.
Open Spot - Database for parking spots, pretty cool, and has come in handy in a city or at the beach. You simple look for an open spot, post when you're leaving your spot, etc.
ROM Gripper - video game console emulator. Nothing like playing NES games on your Droid.
Same MMS.
Scary Wallpapers - I only got this so I could have this one really cool background they have of zombie arms. Really high quality wallpapers though.
Sonic Screwdriver - All the Doctor Who screwdrivers, with sound!
Spare Parts - List of harder to find, less used, but important phone settings.
XBOX Life Statistics - Syncs with my XBOX Live account, I can see when friends are on, what they are playing, and even send messages.
Zombie Run! - Uses GPS to see where you are, brings up a map, and puts zombies on it moving towards you. You designate a destination and then try to get there avoiding the Zombies. TONS of fun.

That's not quite all of mine... but that's the majority of them. I don't use them all THAT frequently... but I do use them all haha.
If you have any suggestions, feel free... I love playing with new apps.

Also, some of these apps are paid, some of which I got for from through the Amazon appstore but some I ponied up for because they are essential, to me, to make all of the automations that I want.

Adfree - Removes some pesky adds, Scrabble defies it.
Advanced Task Manager - I use this for the Autokill feature that kills processes on screen off
Android Assistant - A much better viewer of the active processes and has in depth information on start-up and other tasks
Antivirus Free - Scans freshly installed apps
Amazon Appstore - Daily Free (usually paid) apps
Connectbot - SSH terminal emulator and
ConvertPad - pretty wild conversion app
Docs - Access to Google docs
Dolphin Browser - Strong browser, sometime I use Miren though.
Droid X Bootstrapper - Required for ROOT
GO Launcher EX - My launcher of choice
Hacker's Keyboard - I use this keyboard if I am in connectbot or Terminal Emulator
Jorte - excellent calendar app
JuiceDefender - I am still messing with this it is supposed to help with battery life.
K-9 Mail - Much, much better mail app. (with Doctor Who reference)
Link Shortener for TinyURL - Self explanatory
Netflix - Sometimes I get bored, chews the shit out of the battery.
On Air - File transfer over WiFi (still working on this one)
Picplz - Fast photo upload to Flickr
Quick Boot - Reboot with very few clicks also easy access to Recovery and Bootloader.
Root Explorer - Best way to access the root power of you phone (easy access to remove bloatware)
ShootMe - Take screen shots
SwiftKey X - My primary key board
Tasker - This app lets you automate pretty much everything, I am still tinkering with it, so far I've automated the times for WIFI to turn on and off, when to set night mode and to only turn on GPS when I open Maps or Navigation.
Terminal Emulator - Linux terminal
Titanium Backup - Backup everything on schedule, both apps and settings.
TweetDeck - Twitter and Facebook updates.
z4root - The root master.

Get rid of Advanced Task Killer. Task Killers in general are a bad idea, as they tend to kill system processes that automatically start up again, which causes stability issues and makes your battery drain even faster. Apps that aren't in use generally aren't actively running anyway (unless they're e-mail or reader type applications that need to routinely sync, and you shouldn't want to use a task killer on those). Apps that are using the CPU when they aren't active are generally doing so because they're badly coded, in which case it's better to get rid of them altogether then to rely on another app to shut them down routinely. And if you need those apps, you can kill them manually through the system itself.

I was considering opening a new thread but spotted this one still clinging to life. It's over a year since I posted about my noobish infatuation with QR codes (which lasted all of 5 minutes) and 6 months since the last post to this thread, so fingers crossed it hasn't sunk so far nobody notices it.

Royal Mail permitting, today I join Generation Tablet. It'll be running Ice Cream Sandwich and was wondering if any of you old Android/tablet pros have any more-recent recommendations for handy apps, tweaks and the like; particularly one I can use for entering lots and lots of text, along the lines of a word processing jobby? It's (supposed to be) coming with a keyboard dock/case already.

Cheers.

@Foamhead: I have to confess to being obsessed with QR codes for 26 minutes or so as well. I'm pretty sure there is documented proof earlier in the thread.
As far as apps for tablets, here are a few I've found helpful on my Toshiba Thrive (still on Honeycomb):

Folder Organizer - Allows you to tag apps and make folders out of the tags.
Handrite - A handwriting app that I found useful when taking notes.
Pefect Viewer - Great comic book reader
PS Touch - Photoshop for your tablet. So cool.
SketchBook - Also nice for doodling and drawing.
Just Notepad - I use this for word processing, but I don't do much of that on my tablet.
Sworkit - Convenient workout creation.
Solid Explorer - Great folder viewing app that incorporates FTP and Dropbox as well.
