Does anyone else here play Echo Bazaar? (It's a browser game - log-in via Twitter, but doesn't post any annoying shit on your Twitter feed). I seem to have become ever-so-slightly addicted to it.
It's kind of bothered me that it feels as if it 'borrows' heavily from NEVERWHERE and perhaps also from THE CITY AND THE CITY to a degree. I haven't really been able to get past that bother and get into it. I'm sure it's fun, though. About everyone I know seems to think so.
It's definitely got a touch of Neverwhere about it (and that whole "dark alternative London" riff that goes through various books), but with a more Victorian feel (which I know is hardly original in fiction, but...)
given the time at which the developers of Echo Bazaar first introduced it, they can't have derived inspiration from The City and the City in mind when they conceived of the world.
anyway, if anyone would like to add me (or rather my character) they can do so as lady_kensington on Twitter.
I like the game so much that I asked the developers if I could help write them write new content for the game and another online game called Prisoner's Honey that they have in the planning stages. I hope that they will like my submissions and let me write for them.
I'm very impressed with the content of ECHO BAZAAR - especially for a free (well, freemium, since you can choose to buy extra actions with real-world money) browser game. I presume PRISONER'S HONEY is set in the same world, since Prisoner's Honey is mentioned in ECHO BAZAAR.
I'm trying to get myself in the pace of ECHO BAZAAR- at the moment I'm clock-watching while it ticks down the 7 minutes to my next go. Must. pace. self.
I feel for ya! thanks for the add. I just added you likewise.
as for whether Prisoner's Honey will take place in the same world because (spoiler for those very new to Echo Bazaar),
Prisoner's Honey allows you to skip from world to world. so I guess that Prisoner's Honey (the game) will allow you to skip between world. only guessing though.
as well, while Failbetter Games want to keep the IP on all elements of Echo Bazaar, they currently would like to put out Prisoner's Honey out on a Creative Commons license.
I started playing that a few months ago - the descriptions are fun but the gam itself is sort of boring so I dropped it... and NOW all my friends on twitter have gotten into it and are spamming me with eldritch cat tweets :P
