Once again, it's like some force took over my body when I read about this challenge on Warren's blog... I tried to go and read but was compelled to sit down and create, instead.

Which is especially weird as I have never even seen an episode of Dr. Who. I read a comic, once... but if I've broken any "rules" then blame or praise should probably be assigned to just not knowing any better. :-)

Notes:
  • I like this logo concept but in practice it's rubbish; a thumbprint just doesn't reduce well.
  • The thirteenth Doctor (per the acquaintance who inspired him) has heavily-tattooed arms. I decided he would wear a vest, then decided for whatever equally-random reason that he really needed something beneath the vest. But I wanted to show the tattoos. Solution? He's wearing a shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

This may be utter Who blasphemy, but the question that first came to mind was: "Why does the Doctor have to be a man? Or just a straight man? Or just a straight white English man?"
So I decided to play with that, and well, here you go... Sci-fi and Genderbending; a winning combination.
Also decided to establish that the TARDIS glitch has been partially fixed; now instead of a police box, it looks like a concrete kiosk.

That did run through my head, but I dismissed it as being too cliche/insulting assuming all cross-dressers are sex prowling deviants in public toilets. But I did think it would be funny if it was a public toilet and was constantly locked/out of order to the general public. I can see lines of people queuing outside the TARDIS.

@frequent - Automatically my favourite for adapting the idea to a new medium, while keeping in classic elements. I'm fascinated with the idea of a little girl developing her own take on a character who was for years played by middle-aged men. Your version seems to hold herself in a mature, steely manner - contrasting with the older, male Doctors behaving like children. Terrific attention to detail there.

@Neilford - The return of the ? logo is always welcome, but I also love the designer label signature on that Cyberman. Customised Cybers would be a beautifully ludicrous visual.

@Sizer - I want to be you when I grow up. (I'm 20) But seriously, I agree that a female actor should play the final Doctor, just as long as she's a talented one. Thusfar, the only person I've seen arguing against it had no really valid points at all except "I don't like the idea". Again, using classic elements in a new way to establish the character. Very cool.

@Ted - The grimace makes it for me. Very nice.

@struthersneil - I like the implication that this is a hermit Doctor, perhaps stranded on a certain planet and/or time zone, or self-exiled. The combination of regal robes and authoritative staff with a wacky office t-shirt as worn by someone's crazy uncle and glowing sonic screwdriver create a lovely sense of contrast.

This is made from some different elements I've made over the years. I made this TARDIS interior concept back shortly before the new series premiered and the logo sometime before Steven Moffat took over. I thought that the 13th Doctor could look similar to a younger William Hartnell but in a black suit similar to some The Master has worn. I'm imagining the 13th Doctor would have a bit more of a darker side. I'm thinking he might be a little more of an "ends justifies the means" type person sometimes. 1. They could ignore the matter entirely. Quite frankly, it only came up out of the blue in 1975 and has only been addressed a handful of times since. Since the show has continuity inconsistencies coming out of its ears, it's almost too inside baseball to make a fuss over.

2. They could milk an entire series out of the question. I could see the 13th Doctor in his final moments, fully expecting to die...and then he regenerates instead...and has no idea why. I like the idea of the 13th visually resembling a younger William Hartnell, with the implication being that the Doctor's regenerations are cyclical. I just read Harlan Ellison's Pheonix and was, again, totally headspun by this idea (the cyclical nature of time) in the best possible way. it just feels natural to think that every end is a beginning, which is the Doctor's regeneration process in a nutshell, after all, isn't it?

which brings me to a question: obviously the actors in the roles age, so I feel that it is safe to assume that each of the Doctor's incarnations age in turn. certainly in the modern era of Who, the regenerations are trending downward in youth. are we willing to assume from that, as might be inferred from the earliest entries in this thread, that each subsequent incarnation will be younger than the last, at least initially, upon regeneration?

If I actually remembered what he looked like, maybe, otherwise, happy coincidence. ( As with all the people on iO9 saying it looks like Matt Smith, David Tennant or David Bowie. ) I actually chose to be vaguely realistic about it. Let's face it, they'll go with someone who looks good, won't alienate/challenge too much and be vaguely "trendy". Since the leather jacket's been done already, the suit has been done already and now the dweeby tweet/bowtie are all old, why not a bit of mod/casual cool? I wasn't trying to be outlandish. For me the Doctor is at his best when he is understated and blending in. I mean, sure he has his quirks, but those are more personality quirks than anything else. I see The Doctor as someone who has to fit in while traveling to the past and the future. I see his 13th incarnation as being the best bits of all his previous incarnations, a sort of who's who of Who for the last hurrah. Not in the way he dresses but in personality. And I LOVE the idea of him cycling back around over and over. With 13 being a young number 1. So I thought how would a young first Doctor look? Especially when he is actually an older now than ever before. Classic overcoat, vest, fobwatch, cargo jeans with pockets that are bigger on the inside (he has been collecting a lot of stuff in his final years) However I picture him being some what disheveled, but not in an extreme way, just a little sloppy. Like a cross between a teenager and a man who is ready for retirement on the weekend. Unshaven, un-tucked, and finally ginger. :)

The new logo is the elemental symbol for what I imagine The Tardis would be grown from. I think it should be 013 on the Time Lord periodic table. 13th Doctor and companion

This Doctor like feeling the grass under his bare feet while thinking. He's a mourning man; serious, tormented and restless.
For his companion I first wanted to draw a dude because the Doctor really needs some wild gay butt sex, but instead my hand draw this lady.
She's a killer robot who's memory have been wiped out, her emotion center is damaged so even in the worst situation possible she can only feel happiness -much to her dismay- . She often put the Doctor's patience to a challenge, bringing a comedy element this Doctor lack of.

@Pia Guerra - I really like your TARDIS interior. I love the time rotor and console. The rest of the interior reminds me of a cross between the Chris Eccleston/David Tennant interior and the Torchwood hub - in a good way. Plus you can never have too much Sally Sparrow. My take on 13. Figured he would be a bit more brash, smug, harder to deal with. For a companion I chose the idea of a botched resurrection/regeneration of the Master, now being a little girl. She'd still have all of the Master's memories but with the new personality of a 10- year old. Refuse her ice cream and she'll attempt to wipe your existence from the time stream. The Doctor would take her in as an attempt to leave the universe with a replacement...calamity ensues.

I like that the Doctor is a time traveler, and his clothes are often mixed and matched from different era's but I was still trying to keep it stylish. It's meant to look like Paul Bettany. I figure in his 13th incarnation he's going to be raring to do even more crazy things before he goes. And Paul Bettany's brilliant at playing crazy geniuses. And all the incarnations like to look dapper, so i figured a waistcoat would be right. the TARDIS is wooden panelled, sort of like the 8th Doctor's TARDIS, but cooler.

He has given up his mid-life crisis of trying to be young, but not quite given up the energy, that spark and virility that so enamors us with him and makes him so capable in action. He opts instead for a man of middling age, a balance between the grumpy old men of his youth and the seeming reversal as he grew older. He retains the twinkle in the eye, and the all-too-clever smirk on his just-so-weathered face, but with a maturity that makes him handsome without being too young or pretty. And of course, he finally gets to be ginger, though with a touch of gray.

Variants of the outfit could include other colors than orange, and really the one or two outfits is something he could do without entirely, though sticking mostly with three-piece suits, spats and a good bit of flair. The cane isn't quite necessary, but stylish and gentlemanly and contains his most recent incarnation of his handy sonic screwdriver, which can be easily called upon when needed. (as well as a few other tricks hidden in the harmless looking stick)

A time loop. The doc takes in his/her grandkid, and raises her, while keeping a look out for his first self to give her to.

The logo was to represent the combination of genetics and gender, and the backwards going back to the beginning.

The buttons of the vest would have question marks, and the questioncane is fully adaptable to desired length. I always liked the idea of The Doctor coming full circle with his last regeneration. So, I went with a younger variation of the First Doctor. Being at the end of his life, he's a little darker than previous versions, hence the black coat and the noir-ish fedora. Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I was inspired to post by this topic, because I just happened to start doing fanart again for the first time in 3 years - I drew the 10th Doctor. Amazing timing. Anyways, here's my offering. It may not be as imaginative as some of the others - everyone's stuff is really amazing. I really would love to see all of these made.

Mine's pretty-much based on story speculation. The concept is an older, more balanced 13th doctor. He has lost old hang-ups about family and the Time Lords. He doesn't do understated or modesty, and he has given up the lonely, angsty, doctor lark. He's training Jenny (his cloned daughter) up on TARDIS piloting, maintenance and general awesomeness. He wears his species on his sleeve - well, his jacket... They're both happy on their travels, because what do you have to worry about when you're The Oncoming Storm. The logo turns the DW into a roman numeral XIII to commemorate the doctor's final regeneration. (Final? My thought here is that, given everything that's happened in the Doctor's long life, and given his upcoming mortality, he might just go a bit mad. That in mind, his choice of outfit doesn't match with anything - it's mostly just "found" items. Plus, it's about time we saw a Doctor in a kilt. I also love that Tilda Swinton keeps coming up. Tilda as the Doctor is something I’ve thought for ages would be awesome, so in fact to start with I tried to draw her in Orlando mode - but couldn’t quite make it work. So instead I went for Toshiro Mifune (think of his gruff persona in Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and High and Low especially) in a thirties Brighton Rock-style suit and patent DMs.

Apologies to everyone else who’s done the Doctor smoking, and/or with a dog of some description. (This one’s meant to be an Italian greyhound, BTW.)

Such an amazing array of talent on display in this thread, some I have to mention: Templesmith, Pia Guerra, Annie (I was thinking Bill Nighy too), Sizer, Dbed (devastatingly awesome, every time), Bruceohughes (great logo!), tubbypaws (mindbending stuff!), and mthemordant (great logo & detailing). And there's still for others to chip in. Can't wait to see what turns up.
