@val it is fun how the illusion only works (at least for me) when my eyes are moving.
I have that image on my harddrive slideshow. It's really fun when it's thrown up on a 40" tv.

Having worked quite a while as a tech journalist, this has always baffled me, but that's one mystery solved.

How do mobile manufacturers decided on a name for their new device:

And so, in the year 2010, Spain unwittingly trains the avian world to kill humanity: annoying us to death.

One last one before I leave the internet forest and head for the real one...

Do you think it would be illegal for him to walk around shirtless?

    Him?

wow, can't wait for it not to be on the page with that picture

    anyway,

Five days ago NASA dumped some photos onto a Flickr Commons account, at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nasacommons/:

So far only 180 photos. The Flickr blog says "Their Commons account will feature photos from across the agency’s many locations and centers, chronicling the history of space and lunar missions, and the people and places of the organization," so maybe they will be adding more.

Val, I am making that picture someone's desktop at work next week. That'll teach them to lock their computers when they leave.

Those NASA images, especially the second to last, are stunning. That is a beautiful photograph. It seems almost tragic that they represent what might well be in terminal decline.

I consider myself a feminist, but as a "response" to the original, it just seems like a misfire. I don't find a reading of that level of aggravated creepiness justified anywhere in the original; the response just ups the ante way too much.

Agreed. This is more of a spotlight grab than a response.

Yeah, it's not quite the Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now's "G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N. (You Know I've Got A)" to Avril Lavigne's "G.I.R.L.F.R.I.E.N.D." it wants to be, is it?

I usually find responses to not be very good, but that' just me.

anyway - a follow up to the 4-chan /b/ deciding to make a WWII veteran's 90th birthday party epic. It made me smile.

the only thing that would make me smile more would be when they showed up if they said, "Hi! We're from the internet and we're here to help you celebrate!" because that would be awesome.

I wasn't around in the 60s but apparently the 60s spiderman cartoon's version of J. Jonah Jameson kicked ass

That was lovely. Just what I needed while doing grinding work.

    @Labyrinthine, et al:

I think the response video makes much more sense, if one had seen
    this
version first. This is the supposedly "50 cent" remix, which adds a totally unecessary misogynist prelude to the whole thing.

If one took that to the the original, and saw the whole thing in *that* sense...well, it is a whole different thing, isn't it?
Taken all together, a useful lesson on authorial intent and refusal of remix/remodel rights is provided.

I don't know if anyone else here is a fan of Superchunk (I'm from NC and grew up listening to them and they have a special place in my heart) but if you are NPR is streaming their new album in it's entirety until it's release on September 14th.
