The first piece of Warren's work I read was Transmet, which burst my brain so messily that I haven't recovered since.

I sometimes make noises and scribbles which I've linked to in my profile.

I have been frequenting these forums for the last 4-5 years, and during that time have grown quite addicted to the weekly art challenges that Warren posts here. This community has been responsible for me expanding my business base during these lousy economic times.

I am currently working with magazines, game companies, internet development sites, comic artists and writers, and am designing all the components of electronic musician Thomas Dolby's upcoming album, doing all the album and web graphics and helping him develop a massive online game tied into the album's release. I'm a UK based illustrator specialising in comic books, concept art and storyboards, most recently for a horror film called SPLINTERED (which is out on theatrical release today incidently). For the last few years I've been involved in several projects to promote indie comics as editor and publisher, through the ENGINE COMICS line, REDEYE MAGAZINE, a brief stint in COMICS INTERNATIONAL, and the EAGLES INITIATIVE, which I'll be posting about shortly.

Yeah, well, here's the story: I stumbled upon Freakangels on a message board I frequent about every day, and there was a thread dedicated to FA and well, most of the people frequenting it were people I know to have tastes similar to mine, so I thought I might check out what they're going on about. I spent the next two days reading FA and been lurking this forum ever since.

My real life name is Mariya, I live in Germany, though originally I'm from a bit farther east. It took me some time to scratch together some courage to sign up here because of the amazing amount of creative and artsy stuff people on here produce. That said, I study illustration with the aim of one day drawing lots and lots of comics, but I'm not solely focused on this particular direction.

Mostly, what I do beside drawing isn't very exciting. I read what ever I get my hands on, sew occasionally, hang out on message boards and listen to music. Every now and then I dress myself up as the ugliest monster I can manage and do some Vampire Live roleplaying. That about covers my monthly dose of what people call 'socializing'.

As you can see, brevity is not one of my defining traits. At least not when writing. People say I barely talk at all in real life. though.

I’m a writer, sculptor, illustrator, costumer, puppeteer, freak show performer and cape enthusiast. But mainly writer.

I've got a graphic novel entitled The Battle of Blood & Ink coming out next fall from Tor, which is about how much information you owe your community, and whether it is better or not to know the daily horrors others must do in order for you to live your life. It's also about a girl named Ashe without a history, and rayguns and airships and flying cities and horrible horrible secrets. I'm currently do a podcast of prequel stories until the book comes out, over at Fables of the Flying City. You don't need to listen to the podcast to enjoy the book, but it will give you a nice aura of smugness when the book comes out. And who doesn't want that?

The site also has some incredible art by the extraordinarly talented Steve Walker and Natalie Kelly, who are the artists on the book.

Way back when, I was a founding member of 365 Tomorrows, and wrote 78 stories for it. In addition to Fables of the Flying City, am the creator of two other podcasts, The Voice of Free Planet X and Aliens You Will Meet.

I'm half Swedish, half Mexican product of two strange creatures who met in Vietnam after the war and decided to get married three months later despite not speaking a word of each other's language. I'm told by many that those first few months were spent in silent contemplation of... huh... each other. Anyway, a few years later I was born in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, and perhaps to signal the achievement of some long forgotten prophesy, the El Chichonal Volcano erupted to inform the world of my coming... I shit you not. Many years later and many countries later (Guatemala, Pakistan, Switzerland, France, England) left me with a Diploma in Architecture from the London Institute of Archaeology and a worthless piece of paper from the International Film School of Paris. I currently live and work in Singapore where I miss my European work hours and vacations, and the wonderful benefits I once had working at the ILO... these Asians work too fucking much in my sincere opinion. I had a free weekend once, back sometime last century, all I do now is slave away under the relentless sun in 100% humidity and pray to whichever dark goD will strike me down for the stupid idea of getting involved with broadcast television.

I'm a writer and video editor, I've done past work for the CNN World Report, France 2, Discovery, Channel News Asia, MediaCorp (the evil corporation which runs the airwaves here in Singapore... think of it as the BBC as run by Cthulu), National Geographic, and a host of small Arab TV Stations. Most of my work is currently documentary in nature, though I also write and edit drama's and random infotainment shows where not enough children a mauled by Panda's. I'm also a short story writer, complainer, amateur photographer, and avid reader of pretty much anything... history, biographies, SF & fantasy, horror, mystery, thriller's, post-modern literature, the classics from Homer pretty much onwards, theology, philosophy, science & technology, comics, manga, BD, and yeah, pretty much anything written by Warren Ellis. It's not my fault honestly, I need to read his spiteful words to stay sane in a place like Singapore... it's either that or be taken over by the machine, have my brain replaced by a glossy icon of Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore's founder and Minister Mentor who has 'issues' with free speech), and lose the ability to walk into a crowded room and shout "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant".



Most of my time though is spent wallowing in misery at my inability to spend as much time as I'd like on my personal pet projects, my writing and the like, and howling in frustration at my drawing skills which once gloriously developed from strange squiggly lines through to stick figures, then got pretty much stuck there. Other than that I'm a bit of an audiophile, big Jazz and blues fan, as well as classical and some opera. I worship the various albums of musicians as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Joe Hisaishi, Mark Knopfler, Leonard Cohen, Sigur Ros, and too many more to mention. Oh... and I like cats, though despite owning two I'm still not convinced they're aren't plotting something nefarious with me in mind... they give me such looks sometimes that truly make me wonder...

Anyway, after so long spent hovering around the edges of Whitechapel I think it's about time I got in on the action. Hopefully this will not end in tears, smoke, howled denials, and Wikipedia entries under genocide.

Hello everyone, I am Tom Muller, and like Paul I'm a graphic designer and have been hanging around these parts for much too long.

I've been in the industry for 12 years and while I primarily work in digital (I've designed websites for everyone, going from Hexstatic, Kid Koala and Roots Manuva to Columbia Records, Kylie, Lily, The Pet Shop Boys and *shudder* Dido).

Along all the web stuff I've always kept a healthy appetite for print design and comics of course, which has seen me team up with Ashley Wood for whom I've designed loads of stuff (websites, logos, books,…), Art directing Liam Sharps Mam Tor Publishing books and recently teaming up with Ivan Brandon for a variety of cool stuff, most notably VIKING. And I bagged and Eisner nomination for the design of Comic Book Tattoo, the Tori Amos anthology from Image 2 years ago, of which I'm still a little proud in a comic geek kind of way.

My name's Colleen and I'm a senior in high school up in New England. I was raised partially in Dublin, Ireland, but haven't been able to travel back there for a long time. I play field hockey and rugby and I longboard when I'm not busy, which is pretty often.

I'm taking a printmaking class right now (currently working on a linoleum print of a robot destroying a city) but I love to paint. Mostly I've painted helmets and skateboards and such for custom orders. I don't think I'll make my career out of it but it's definitely something I love to do.

I'll probably do more lurking than posting here, as this is what I do almost everywhere else. I once had the habit of writing long satirical rants on morality and/or stupidity subjects which slowly derailed into more (less?) inane ramblings about how I'm not actually a tea person, or something. N-E-WAY. Not important. I just fondly remember that when I couldn't shut up about signed musicians being horrible sellouts. It ended with me proclaiming that music has to be shitty to be good.

Crazy transition: I make music with a program meant to create guitar tabs. It's called TuxGuitar, is free and is absolutely sweet. Works great as a sequencer for me. Not like I ever tried a different one. Recently I found out you can just click on the score to add notes. Isn't that great? Not like I do that. I can't read notes.

As for the music, check out my latest release over at my Bandcamp. I'm not signed, that's how you know I'm not a sellout. And the music is very very good. I attended the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA where I received a BFA in Sequential Art. I also have an MLS form the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland.

I live with my wife and 2 cats in Hillsboro, Oregon and am currently a librarian at a small liberal arts university. I'm also a writer and have self published a novel, The Machine of the World, and am currently putting together some proposals for comics series.

My name is Jared and I live in Fayetteville Arkansas. I am a Wal*Martian by occupation (-gag-) though not by choice I can assure you. I hope to one day work for myself, doing something that I enjoy, and not having to hate work day after day.

Role Playing Games are my passion, my one true love. Getting together every week with my group and creating a story, just makes me feel good. Helps the mind grow. Of course I am a lover of all thing comics and graphic novels too!

I'm Martin Hekker (Man-machine) and am in digital comics and neuroscience. Unfortunately in the reverse order during my typical work week.
I've lurked here in the past and have been looking for a message board loosely focused on comics, and this seems to be the place.
I am pretty agnostic about mainstream comics. When I read comics as a kid I was mostly interested in the ad on the back for 101 green toy soldiers and looking at human anatomy under stretch suits.
But they've grown on me, mostly as other mediums have caused intense boredom (action adventure movies, CDs, DVDs, HBO series).
I read most of my comics at the public library. In part because who ever is in charge of the collections in Chicago has great taste in comics. It's just a bit easier than going to the comic store and being overwhelmed by the choices.
I wrote a comic in college called N.O.D. that was distributed monthly in Evanston, Illinois. Occasionally I'll meet some black-clad cybergoth who remembers it and that will bring me a small amount of happiness. Hey, you take what you can get.
Although I love the smell of ink, the Wacom Cintiq is really mystifyingly good. I also do electronic music. In this endeavor I find computer simulations of analogue process terrible. But for some reason I am less bothered by digital 2D processes. I am Jensen, occasionally known as Teal, Seraph, or if you happen to be someone who knew me during my wayward high school days, Ryuu.

I am a graduate student in Creative Nonfiction writing at Emerson college, which essentially means "I don't make enough money to pay for my rent and I will never have a job and also be in debt forever."

I started reading comics because I developed an obsession with giant robots from space sometime in college. I thus set out to start reading comics about giant robots, and in the course of talking to friends about said giant robots they began to heap on me all sorts of other kinds of comics.

Actually, that's a lie - I started with Sandman, but then didn't bother with much else till later. The giant robots were kind of a gateway into more, however. As was living with a man who was utterly obsessed with Batman and collected all things Batman.

I would read more, but it's one of those functions of time + money that I can't quite finish. I'd rather be able to heat my apartment than read awesome comics. Sadly.

Presumably, I exist. I find science fascinating and I'm one of those people who, when the machines finally take over, will instead breathe a sigh of relief.

Funny to me at any rate, given that the first comics I began reading regularly were about giant robots from space, but in my case they were the anomaly, and I only found my "gateway" comics later when friends started pushing Marvel superhero books on me, entirely unrelated to any interest in giant robots on anyone's part.

My name is Miranda, but some people call me Ran Ran, which is nice.

I adore comics, science fiction, Northern European Renaissance paintings, bitter flavors, cat wrestling, drawing, bad television & beer, and the smell of wet cement. I have been making things all my life, and managed to nab myself a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fine Arts (a Bufafuh, in case you're wondering).

I started reading comics at the tender age of twelve, when my step-brother left his collection of late 80's, early 90's Marvel comics with my parents. The collection was in all actuality the size of an over-stuffed loveseat, and I read them all. Thems wuz the dayz...

I moved around a lot as a little kid (hippie parents-- have tent, will live in it), but spent the bulk of my childhood/young-adulthood in NYC.

Been without internet for a solid half a year, and am so out of the Whitechapel loop a reintroduction is necessary.

I was living in Newcastle, completing my Honours in English, by studying Transmetropolitan.
In the intervening time I've moved to Melbourne, (fuck yeah rain!), and am 30 days off submission of thesis.

I've realised all too late that i hate sitting alone in a room studying how awesome other people's creativity is
and locking up my brain into finding the patterns. But i'm 10 Grand down so I may as well shiv the fucker
while the mettle's still hot!

I love everything comics, and will tell you all about it if you ask one too many polite questions.

I'm currently festering a musical theatre concept and a novel about drought and the white expereience of the dreamtime,
so hopefully i'll soon be talking shit about those things instead!
