It's my sixth album and the second I don't consider absolute shit. I started making music without any prior experience or musical education two years ago. Making shit, pretty much. By now my shit has evolved to stuff. So please listen to my stuff. All tracks are in chronological order, so the quality should increase throughout the album. Because it definitely does in my overall work.

Oh, and it's some kind of Internet techno. Dunno what label to plaster on it. Here's a joke (serious) review I wrote myself.

My friends and I made the music for this video using a 20 year old korg synthesizer and a modern computer. The cartoons are a bunch of HEY APATHY test animations I did in college that we thought it would be fun to do the score/foley for.

Put two new tracks up on Soundcloud , both improvisations with an old Hinton Instruments synthesizer, which is sort of like half an EMS Synthi. No keyboard or sequencer, just self-triggering envelopes and free oscillators. They're both live recordings, one in studio, one on stage. The first, Murder in the Cathedral might not be listenable without a huge subwoofer and very detailed monitors, because that's what I performed it on, and it doesn't seem to transfer very well. The second, Untitled, May 2010, is far easier on the speakers and ears, and is probably a much better piece too.

i've been getting fab feedback on that radiophonic thing. It was great fun to do and i'm real glad you dig it.
I never intended to make it as an actual release but i'm starting to think otherwise now and do a real limited run on mini-cd.
I don't feel as though the radiophonic urge has gone away yet so there may be another episode coming.

I've just finished a new longform piece of slow wash drones over an Arizonan friend's field recordings which came together really quickly and i'm pretty happy with. Just got to do the sleeve designing thing now which isn't something I particularly enjoy at all.

I'm cheating a tiny bit here, but I think my boyfriend's band would appeal to the Whitechapel crowd. I think the musician/comic book line should be crossed as often as possible. The Lumerians are a Bay Area band that just got signed onto Knitting Factory Records, and they have a psychedelic, bootie-shaking, sometimes Brazilian-influenced sound.

I've finished another Biggie remix album. I'm happy with it, it's got a good flow to it. It incorporates live instrumentation, programmed instrumentation, sampling (even Bob Dylan), turntablism, and electronics. And it's free.

For a very first try, that is very, very encouraging. Without anything else to go on (like your artistic intentions or whatever) it's hard to comment, but most people I know who started out with fully featured systems like FL Studio tend toward the opaque with their early attempts. It's refreshing to hear such a minimal approach.

My only comment/advice (presuming you even need it) is to learn proper mix engineering techniques (just the very basics) from a book or online, and apply them to absolutely everything you do, all the time. It's not called producing, as opposed to recording or composing, for nothing. Other than that, great start, and keep at it!

One of my bands, The Forest Children, is putting the finishing touches on our new album, Kingdom Animalia. It's mainly me and one other guy and I live in LA and he's back in my native Chicago, so recording is slow to say the least, and it is all done via email. While back in Chi town recently I heard the album for the first time (he writes the music on acid pro and his bass, sends the rhythm track to me over yousendit, I record guitar, send it back, then he does vox and finishes. We both work full time and have other projects so I usually don't hear the finished product for about a year) and on a rather spur of the moment impulse, we started to shoot a video. Long story short (not really) I came home and continued to film, almost driven by unconscious ideas, and the finished product went up on youtube two nights ago. Would love to hear feedback.

Right then, it's about time for some publicity. I've got this radio show on Subcity in Glasgow. It's called New Music Isn't New. It's basically me drawing highly tenuous connections between popular music and modern composition or other pioneering genres, and playing them. My radio chat, by Edition Three, is just about bearable. It's bloody hard to talk non-stop while trying to remember what you're talking about and not say anything stupid or flat out wrong. But I'm getting there. On the other hand, the music is excellent, mainly because it's not my own. Subcity isn't playlisted, so I get to do cool things like playing all of Pendulum Music by Steve Reich, and no one stops me. I'm pretty glad to be able to do this, because I get to play some stuff that wouldn't otherwise get any exposure outside very niche shows in a general survey setting.

So if you're up for some new music, old music that used to be new, and new music that isn't new, check it out. Listen here, and if you're feeling charitable, start with Edition Three from November 20th, after I've learned from a few mistakes...

@CameronYousef - well noticed! I actually wrote the lyric to a different beat by Blockhead that was in 6/8, but didn't have the musical nous to know that was what I was doing at the time... when I went to record it with Salem Anders, he had a 4/4 beat. It took us a few minutes to figure out why the rhyme didn't fit the beat...then Anders whipped out an old waltz tune, and it fit perfectly over that! He's a classically trained guitarist, so he cottoned on to what I'd done pretty fast. The beat we eventually used had to be re-jigged into the same time signature as the waltz. So it happened by happy accident rather than by design. Cardigan Waltz-Hop... I wonder if it will catch on? :D

My latest works:

A Inbuilt Amp/Speaker Combo Tinjo with added Squidlyness. I used the guts of a PC speaker to use as a mini amp which is on the backside of it, connected to a contact mic inside the tin. The mic is quite sensitive so on full volume it gives off a nice overdrive sound.

"You Won't Want Me" is the first video off an album my record label (Five Three Dial Tone Records) put out earlier this past summer.
The band is called Lettercamp. They're from Detroit. Both their debut album, "Raccoon Panda," and the remix EP that followed, "Raccoon Panda Redux," can be downloaded free on their bandcamp site and ours.

i told my boyfriend to come post in this here thread and he told me to just plug his stuff for him x_x sorry if that's not allowed, but here it is. He has two projects he's working on, one called The Shaolin Signal, which is more proper band-like, and Preteen Pornstar, for which he works on stuff for, sends to his friend, who then also works on stuff, and this collaboration goes back and forth, with various people coming in for different tracks. He tends to live in the "noisemaker category, but is also a fantastic guitarist. For anyone wondering, I prefer his Preteen work, but it's all good.

Preteen Pornstar site All the albums are free download here. I particularly like the album Little Kid Stories and In Goat We Thrust (Approaching Everywhere from cd2 is the song in my play piercing video, btw). All my favorites of his work come from those two albums.

How are Bandcamp and Soundcloud for samples of questionable legality? They both seem okay, almost too good. I've seen plenty of unauthorized remixes and covers on Soundcloud and also a fair amount of just straight up stolen music. Soundcloud has a much better searching and tags system and I'd avoided searching Bandcamp up until now, but with a quick check it appears there are plenty of rights infringing songs there too. Are they both taking the Youtube approach and waiting for complaints? There are some really blatant abuses. Thankfully, I guess it's no longer possible to have humans screen the audio. If mediafire and rapidshare are legal much more legitimate sites should be safe, I suppose.

I wonder what the threshold is for a record label go after you? Youtube videos with very few views get taken down for ridiculous reasons. Part of the appeal of these new music sites is their search engine optimization, but it might actually hurt.

I did some thinking and experimenting and realized that limiting albums to about 20 minutes has been super successful.(creatively, not financially, but I image it would be as well) Wish I had come to this conclusion sooner. I hope the idea helps someone else. I have a lot of thoughts on why it works and specifics, but that's tl;dr, csb and I highly recommend just trying it!

Are there any group blogs run by musicians? I mean where a group of like minded musicians talk about things that are relevant to them, review/promote other people's music, discuss process, and so on. It would be more sustainable than with writers because you already have a way to make money - your songs! Click the authors name and boom bandcamp buy. Interesting content would also be better promotion than anything else I can think of online, short of a friend recommending music to me. (Never would have listened to Julian Cope without his site!) Something like get 10 bands and post weekdays, each person would only post twice a month leaving plenty of time for the actual making of music. Members of bands with multiple people would have even less posts to make. Throw in a tasteful amount of microblog-style link spam and get the members to snap a photo of something every once in a while too, maybe. Frequent enough updating? Too frequent? It could be a real and meaningful way for record labels to exist on the net! Thoughts?

@celan Yeah, I used to be guilty of trying to fill that 74min space on CDs, mostly just because it existed....that was bad for my creativity :). Recordings and especially something as long as the 70 minute cd is a weird/novel concept for enjoying music anyway. Also, I did some more "research"(not scientific, sorry) and I'll point out that Lady Gaga put out EPs and it didn't hurt her(sales). I personally think it probably helped, but who can say. Any kind of expectations about how long an album should be will most likely be phased out naturally as CD sales plummet even further regardless.

Vital Weekly said about it - 'Its perhaps too easy to say that this is just a beautiful piece of music, but it is.'

the album is entirely acoustic with me responsible for wooden flute, piano and sea recordings along with the final mix and my collaborator Darren providing the squeeze-box and guitar.

I still have a couple of real world copies left if any one likes what they hear.

If there's anyone here in Sydney, tomorrow night (Thurs 10) there is a night of projected films with all sound made live on at the Red Rattler in Marrickville. It's called Living Sound in Silent Light and I came up with it because I had made a short post-apocalypse B&W silent on an infra-red video camera that I'd built out of junk, then scored said film for cello, shortwave radio and 44 gallon drum, and I needed an environment in which to showcase it.

So it's 8-11pm at the Red Rattler, 6 Faversham St Marrickville (walk 2 blocks up Sydenham Rd from Sydenham Station and hang a left between the bowling club and the servo, it's bright red and well lit) $15 at the door. The lineup, in reverse chronology from headliner to opener, is:

Nichols, Russel & Lenz (James Nichols from Svelt, Brackets, Dubtable and Spirits of the Dead; Leigh Russel who builds his own synths; and Konrad Lenz of Spirits of the Dead) with a soundtrack for The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Transient Atmospheric Phenomena (my band, with what I expect is another temporary name) and Dog Days, which is a silent post-apocalypse film set in Sydney about 30 years after an extinction event

The Surgical Sideshow with some insanity from their live puppetry/prop-driven horrorshow

LC Beats with live beatboxing and samples over his own claymation short

Ibis Nixon with a bastard mashup of scenes from Hitchcock's classic The Lodger and various blaxploitation flicks

So come! It'll be at least bizarre, and probably wicked.

In all of 2010, I finished exactly 60 seconds of new sound sculpture, "Gametime for Don Van Vliet". And it was chosen for the 2011 60x60 International Mix, and may be choreographed and wind up on a DVD eventually.

(An early and slightly longer version just called "Gametime" was part of Warren's The 4AM podcast last summer, I think it was).

glad you like.
The music I'm mostly make is extended drone pieces usually clocking in at around the 30 to 40 minute mark. I love the deeply immersive nature of long drone pieces. The sleight of hand ways in which you can really take your time to develop changes in tension and texture almost to the point that you can fool the listener into thinking that nothing is happening when in fact at any given time there may be anything up to 20 or 30 individual sounds layered and cued to create a sense of timelessness whilst still developing and propelling the piece. My A Lonely Place album is a good example of this (and my most popular release to date)
I mostly work to a music concrete template and I make most of my music using field recordings - these can be anything from nature sounds recorded around the country side where I live to the noises made whilst boiling a tin of heinz soup - or more 'musical' recordings of instruments (orthodox or otherwise) or site specific performances (one of my pieces contains extracts from a recording I made of me 'playing' the stones and rock pools in a local cave system). These recordings are then processed and edited together to create the final piece.

When I do the Phantasms tunes I am working both within a definite template (both conceptually and temporally) and also within a specific soundworld. I restrict my palette to sounds I consider characteristic of the period I am trying to recreate (the 1960s & 70s).
I've started each of these Phantasms projects by sketching out a vague Dr Who-ish storyline to which i then try and produce a series of compositions to fit the mood of each scene. For the most part I try also to keep a melodic core to each piece.
The obvious difference though is in the track timings - 40 minutes now becomes 40 seconds. I have to absolutely nail the right ambience from the off without any of the luxuries of the longform approach. I find this anything but easy. The 20 minutes of music on Phantasms II took me 8 months to fully realise, the first not much less, but both volumes were great fun to do.

If you've never heard my stuff I do Electronica/Hip-Hop type shit, how much or how little of each I'm not really sure of. Samples vary from Delta-Blues recorded in 1928 to Death From Above 1979 to 50's Swing. Instrumentation includes guitars, bass, MPC, turntables, my phone, synths and beyond.

I must share this with you guys: this isn't my album but "In the Heart of Zombie City" by THE WATERFORD LANDING is one of my favorite records that happens to be by some of my oldest and best mates in Miami, and I've watched it evolve over the last few years into something perfectly polished and gleaming:

A million flavors and echo all fucked-together into an end-of-the-world dark-newwave-shoegaze let's-party-while-society-burns-down kinda album. It's not a concept record but there are enough sound effects and dialogue snippets that a loose plot forms an "audio movie" through the album while your body's busy absorbing, twitching, gyrating.

yes and no?

I've not come across any electric hurdy-gurdies and I guess this is my attempt at that... plus I wanted a way to change the tone of every string at once rather than how hurdy's change notes. I think with enough tinkering I could play proper songs on it, but at least for now the drone part of it works!

I could possibly make lots more, but finding parts might be tricky unless I find a supply of broken power drills somewhere.

I've had a few different projects going on the last few months:

Song of the (Bi-)Week, where I was recording a fully re-arranged cover song every 2 weeks. Fell behind after a death in the family, but should catch up again soon

The Backyard Committee, a rotating collective of musicians based around songwriter Mike Sembos. Indie/folky/rock and roll stuff. I've been playing keyboards with them. The album is fantastic, and free to download, so it's worth checking out if you're a fan of Wilco/Ryan Adams/Guided By Voices/Built to Spill and things in that vein.

Also, if any of you live in the Boston area, I'm playing a show with my all-male hard rock Lady Gaga tribute band, Alejandro & the Fame, featuring international pop singer Cody Grey, on Friday, May 20. More info at the link. The show should be at least 7% more ridiculous than it sounds. I promise.

hi there,

in the mid-to-late 90s, i was in a dark and weird DC band called the Shiny Brites. we didn't fit in with the straightcore Dischord crowd and eventually dissolved in 1999. our final recording Los Pollos Estrellas featured a drummerless avant-rock trio (voice, electric guitar, electric bass) and vanished into the ether despite a nice two paragraph review in the back of the January 1998 Wire.

however, the guitarist and i (bassist) recently decided to submit Los Pollos Estrellas to the Free Music Archive and they graciously accepted it (under the genres "No Wave" and "Experimental"). once it hit the servers we were amazed to find that we had 480-plus listens and 230-plus downloads!

so in a vain attempt to keep the momentum going, i have decided to do some limited publicity. If you need to start somewhere, you can go with our "highight" track Don't Shit On Me.

This one is a set of electronic improvisations called 'The Ants Are Eating My Head' by a very short lived trio I was part of called Jebus.

I wasn't really sure where to share this, and I desperately wanted the Whitechapel folk to hear it:

I'm working on some new songs... long story short, I've found that an amazing way to turn an electric guitar into a Drone-Machine is with a bullet-style vibrator. Yep, for real. I had been tinkering (more like struggling) with an electric pencil sharpener motor, trying to slow the speed down and create a device where it would continuously vibrate the strings (w/ a slide in the other hand); my girl saw me doing this, and she goes: "Do you just want a vibrator? I never use them anymore..."

Who knew?

NOTE TO ALL: Seems that my number of reliable venue contacts in the Helsinki region has just doubled (yes, from 1 to 2), so if any of you are travelling this way, I'd be happy to do my best to hook you up with a gig or two. One club has live music nearly every weeknight, ranging from acoustic singer-songrwriter stuff to hiphop. Pretty poppy all in all. The other club is a monthly club for experimental/odd music.

Can't promise much (if any) pay, but free drinks will be available, and I might well be able to arrange free accomodation/food. Set up a merch table -> ???? -> PROFIT.

I play violin in Rumour Cubes and we've just finished recording some new pieces at Cafe Music Studios, which was terribly exciting!

You can hear one of these tracks on our Soundcloud. We're currently debating whether to release a second EP or whether to record a couple more tracks and release a full album. Any suggestions, just holler!

We're also on the bill to play the wonderful Supernormal Festival in a few weeks, although it's currently uncertain as they haven't yet sold enough tickets to make it viable :-( So if it sounds like your sort of thing, get your tickets quickly!

around 3 or 4 years ago myself and two film-maker friends of mine - Rhodri Thomas and Stephen Jones - for lack of anything better to do embarked on an ambitious video project. A triptych of video pieces. Only two of the three were ever finished so they've never been seen before. A heavily edited version of the second appeared in a couple of gallery shows but this is their first time in public.

if i may be so bold as to make a suggestion - these are meant to be watched on full screen in a dark room with the music on loud or on headphones.

I hope you enjoy. i think they're fab but i'm biased.

So, I did that "Ballads and Buildings" tour this summer.

This is Ballad #1 from Latvia. That was my first time playing without relying on layering or loops, pretty much with just a guitar and amp on 10 and feedback from the Baltics to LEO. It did the brain good.

(That's the raw recording on a Zoom H4, and it may get incorporated into something else in the future.)

This is a concept I wrote down on a scrap of paper (probably while high) when I was about 18 - I think I wanted to do an album of different spellings :-)

The notes spell the word "deaf" and the Morse code beat spells the word deaf too. A silly idea.

Found the scrap of paper and decided to make by late teenage dream a reality!

last year some friends and I went into a rehearsal room a bunch of times and jammed, recording it on mobile phones or video cameras.

edit: then one of the friends, using intemperate language, demanded I take the video down, provoking a massive falling out which brought up a load of underlying bad feeling and now we aren't talking any more.

Got a new album out on BLACK LANTERN MUSIC. It's called "The Parallel" (for many reasons). My fourth Mild Maynyrd release, 2nd full length. I'm still new to this. Ha. It's... kind of hard to describe. It's sample based, with live instrumentation sprinkled in. The theme is 30's entrenched, so there's lots of 30's and 40's and even 20's sampling. But then there's also a song with Layne Staley vocals, and one with a Funkadelic bassline. So yeah. This is the cover (which I made in my garage):

This project played some gigs (most notably an horribly loud outing with Coughs and Psychic Ills at Barden's Boudoir) and recorded an EP of material that ended up gathering dust in a drawer for five or six years. Nah, I shall stop that. This is the band I was in when I was 18. Restarted but not reformed. We have better gear and a few more clues now than we did back then. Taking the attitude that punk is beefed up rock'n'roll, not stripped down metal. Which is something that most bands calling themselves punk these days don't seem to get.

The track WrankNRoll is a Stray Cats and an Eddie Cochran cover stuck together, recorded live and unedited. Recorded the same way is 'Common Land' which was a stab at doing something a bit like The Only Ones, but ended up being a bit Guns N Roses, which isn't necessarily terrible, if that's your thing. Start with those two.

I made two videos for two London Bands....

One band is called DEADCOAST a dark surf guitar band ,lotsa reverb...sound
like they should be in every Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch Movie Soundtrack....
I gave the video the look of a creepy cavernous black and white 50s Biker bar.
With a liquid mirror effect im quite proud of..;-)...

As for the Hypnotic Eye outro video I just couldn't leave this one alone!

The outro was a nightmare to get some kind of half descent audio mix
out of the recording .Because the sound came from the speakers,
which reverberated off the walls, mixed with the chattering of the people,
and electric guitars dominate such a wide frequency spectrum they drown
even Grace Lightman's unusually sharp cutting vocal style.

So frequency cutting, paramatic eqs,multiband compression and all sorts are used
on this audio mulch of a mess.

Hypnotic eye Outro (Version 1)above in the thread is more subby, if you are
listening on speakers, more low end.

Hypnotic eye Outro Version 2 I decided to go the other way,
and instead of cleaning it up, put the dirt back in make it harsher, distorted,
louder, much more like it sounded at the time,
an impressionist take on what it sounded like in my head.

I have a third version video on my flickr account where I put the
low end back in, and kept the loudness.a halfway version between
versions 1 and 2.

Even if you are going to be far from Sydney on August 11, please give this information to everyone you know who might be in the area. It may be vital to their survival.

At his apocalyptic best, Kay Orchison makes sounds that have been compared to Nick Cave drunkenly arguing with the voices in his head - and losing. At, well, other times, he sounds more like an orchestra falling slowly down a slagheap.

Implements which he has been observed to have used musically so far include acoustic guitar and bass, Dobro, mandolin, theremin, thumb piano, 44 gallon drum, xaphoon, occarina, assorted children's toys (musical and otherwise), a full wine glass, a 1920s alarm clock, a pan of water being hit with a spoon, and his voice, which is the result of his being descended from a long line of policemen and drill sergeants and which if pushed hard enough somewhat resembles circus elephants fornicating on a moving freight train.

People have been seen leaving his shows in tears for a wide variety of reasons. He is about to win a bet with a Colourful Local Identity regarding the supposed impossibility of writing a genuinely sad song on the ukulele.

In the words of some justly long-dead reviewer, if listening to Leonard Cohen is like having warm Kahlua poured into your ear, then listening to Tom Waits is like having a fifth of bourbon poured down your tie. With the benefit of significant doubt, we could extrapolate that listening to Kay might be a little like having a schooner of Old poured into your stubbies; or that said reviewer had a drinking problem, being singularly unable to locate the correct orifice.

Live, you will usually see Kay and a range of stringed instruments, played consecutively rather than concurrently. His voice is deep and wide and makes an indelible impression even when backed by instruments constructed hastily from linoleum and tinfoil instead of by, say, the 1953 Soviet Heavy Military Printing Press Chamber Orchestra.

Approach with caution, light blue touch paper, and retire to a safe distance.

So I was talking to Texture about this recently and think it could be a whole shitload of fun, and productive because it would expose you to potentially different audiences: a Whitechapel Mixtape. Hmm? I know we're all of different stripes on here, but as far as I'm concerned genre us just another barrier to separate ourselves from one another. Besides, who the fuck says you can't make a mixtape with Shoegaze and Punk and Metal and Hip-Hop and Ambient and whateverthehellelse? Thoughts?

I'm not sure about how to go about releasing it, or where. Soundcloud works. Perhaps we could make a WHITECHAPEL soundcloud account, then do it there? Just so it isn't on any one person's page only? I do not know. All I know is we're discussing it, and that is a good thing.

Alright. My new record just went public today. It's called "Hills Run Red", again on Black Lantern Music. 3rd full-length as Mild Maynyrd. I have a hard time describing it -- and selling myself in general -- so here's how the BLM guys have described it:

I know what you're thinking, there's not enough Wild West themed narrative sample based electronica concept albums that are as I just described but manage at the same time to not be cheesy in any way. Well the ever adventurous Mild Maynyrd, who hails from the other side of the pond so is very possibly a cattle rustling gunslinger himself (though I couldn't confirm either way as I value my life), has cooked up 'Hills Run Red' for Black Lantern Music to remedy this! Its a peach, its a trip, and it tells a ripping yarn too.

Not hugely interesting, as it all starts in earnest tomorrow.

But here I'm documenting a month long project (those of you unfortunate enough to know me on twitter have already had me wittering about this!)

I'd welcome feedback as I go - eventually the plan is that there may be some performance bits bourne out of it, or something... (anyone want to teach me the ways of bandcamp?) Its a huge learning curve at the moment as I'm working on software to make a lot of bits on my phone, and I only have a really basic set up (no studio, no desk... basically nothing I actually know how to use!) and my playing skills are good enough for writing, but only my voice is up to any sort of performance standard!

So...late last week I decided that I wanted to once again attempt to make some music. Previous attempts were never successful and resulted in ragequitting the brand new free program I downloaded in a combination of "I don't understand how to do this" and "I can't get the sound I want". Someone suggested Reaper to me and I fully expected to be going down the similar path, but...well, I started actually making something.

A big part of this is thanks to Warren Ellis and the folks on here when I asked to be introduced to the world of ambient music. My iPod was crammed full of wonderful stuff and I've been a steady listener since. Of note, Taphead coming to visit Toronto left an impression on me, but so many people here have been wonderful in making and providing some amazing music that got me thinking and feeling. So uh, thank you.

Anyways. More and more I started to screw around and then started making my own field recordings. Regardless of anything, I'm really enjoying this, as I'm finding the experimental/field recording/ambient genre...thing, to be a good method of translation from my thoughts and emotions to auditory stimuli. It's got me thinking like an Ent, in a sense. So much to say, but I'm able to take my time to say it and in my own way. I also like that I can expose myself so intimately in the music, in some cases even putting elements in that if a specific person heard they would get the subject matter. And if I do it right, someone can get what I'm feeling without knowing the details.

Anyways. Here's what I made so far.

In With Me - First track. None of it my own loops and was experimenting with just what I could do with this program, but the sounds have more or less been in my head a while.
D Towards K - Field recordings of a walk I went on over the weekend down Dundas West towards Keele.
Thoughts & Memories - Another walk, but this one doing some decompressing and thinking about a few of the crap things from the past, present and future.

Putting these all together (as well as one secret track that I thought a bit TOO personal to release), I'm starting to notice a common theme. The songs are up on Soundcloud, but I don't see the harm in putting up say, a free bandcamp download when I have several more track under my belt.
