Week from hell. Had a major site revamp to get up and running and only just managed it. But now it's the weekend and things are looking up (because I can theoretically sleep for two days straight). I also discovered that before I joined the company we had an employee named Mark, who left under somewhat mysterious circumstances. An employee named Mark Fox.

As for the episode - Brilliant! I have absolutely no idea what's going on!

This does not seem to bode well for either Mark or Alice.

Reasonable week, mostly because I didn't have to come to work Tuesday when the Tube was shut due to a strike because I went with my wife to the hospital for 20 week ante-natal scan. We're having another boy!

Frustrating. It ended in a win, though, so I'm not complaining.

Mark's had a stroke, then. I was sort of wondering why he was not well if all this immortality stuff is going on.

"The Future" is fucking brilliant.

okay week, still waiting for the shit hit the fan. Have approx 800 hours of work that needs to be completed by mid Nov, and that is on top of my regular duties. Apparently hiring freelancers to help is totally the way to go....and then I gave the cost projections and I am now being encouraged to "do what you can to lower that."
very frustrating cause I was clear in May what I needed to do this....and I am still waiting for 90% of what I need to start the process!

Hoping to watch RiffTrax Titanic this weekend though, so that should be good.

Well, good morning!

If these six pages had been a sequence of a film that I was fully engaged with and committed to... why, I would be over the moon and blown away with joy! What fuckin' balls! I don't want to proclaim "GENIUS!" because the pages are still too fresh, but man, what balls. I'm at a day gig right now, so if the following notes don't make a whole lotta sense, apologies, rushing.

Things I Like a Lot, Elements I Believe Totally "Work":

• the shift in color scheme on page 3 panel 1, even though we're still "here" with arky and Conner and whatshername (ah Kate): this is fuckin masterful. Because we're going to get even freakier colors (in the next beat) on the next page during the "death/dream" (or what I'm starting to think of as the peek inside the "all time/no time" sequence). It's awesome, guys

Things I Like a Lot, but I'm not sure they "Work":

• Oh fuck sorry, I gotta wrap this up, but, really rushing: The big electric SIGNS and "Time as a Machine but NOT a Clock"—yeah, this shit works, too. Again, if this were a film there wouldn't be even (at least for me) a moment's hesitation, it's just that in the committed pace of a long "printed" work like FA it's a little offputting.

It all works. "GENIUS!"

I suppose that, being the chronichler, he wanted to see it for himself. Now the plot thickens indeed! I wonder if there's some connection with that speech on time Luke was doing in the first volume. I am in love with the colouring of the Connor's Dream panels. I would like to live in that apocalyptic psychedelic neon wasteland please. It put me in mind, for some reason, of Philip Bond's interpretation of the planet Meta in Shade The Changing Man, but with a delicate gradation of tone that would have been impossible back in the pre-digital ink days... The translucent skeleton on page two is just... exquisite. Art-wise, I'd have to say Freakangels is among my favourite comics of all time. Every time I think I've got a handle on Paul's style, he changes it up and adds new elements.

Any chance of an 'Absolute' sized Freakangels one day, in the distant future?

Funny how perfectly everything fits together: The one person who's dedicated enough to the art of observing and recording information to talk about what he's experiencing in this half-dead state is talking to the one person experienced enough with weird shit to listen. It's almost as if Luke's post-death and revival ramblings that made people want to hit him with chairs to shut him up was a rehearsal for this, elegantly planned event.

I'm torn between appreciating the whole heartbreaking wondrous structure of the universe as it emerges to the Angels with their accumulating power and the equally heartbreaking scene of these two good friends caught in a very emotional, personal moment of life and death seriousness.

This could be just what comics are about. We've got the words conveying grand, philosophical conundrums and the art grounded in inescapable reality, working on different levels but with equal impact. Or I'm just babbling incoherently because the comic ate my brain.

God that was amazing. I usually only see those kinds of colors after a half bottle of Black Blood Of The Earth. The world looks a lot like page 4 around then haha. Page 2 makes me want to start a band called Mind Field Panic just so that could be the logo. Incredible work, Paul.

The thing I like most about Freakangels, which it's really exploring in depth lately, is the question posed of power. If you were nigh-omnipotent, what would you do with your power? If someone gave you a power that was seemingly unlimited but with no "instruction book," how would you know how to use it? This is something that's always kind of annoyed me about mutant superheroes. How do they know what they can do and what their limits are? It seems like none of them ever really explore it beyond a few training exercises and maybe discovering things in some desperate battles.

Oy vey this week. Diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis, which means I need to sleep roughly constantly and I would were it not for the incredibly painful sore throat that comes with the territory.

In a more congratulatory manner, wow. Paul and Warren really do a number on each other every week. I love all of the concepts that are getting thrown out by this episode, and I love the "shooting yourself in the brain for fun and profit" line because of how well it works. I had a good week, especially when I went to see Machete in theatres. I had a free movie pass, but that movie was so freaking good, and certain parts had such intelligent and biting satire that I was surprised in all the best possible ways at how the film turned out. This definitely gets put on the "I am buying this movie on DVD list."

I recommend seeing it, although there are lots of full breasts scenes and within the first five minutes a

naked woman pulls an iPhone (or equivalent phone type) out of her vagina to call in her boss, Steven Segal.

I really like that Connor is now seeming more of a visionary than the others, in some ways and is able to make sense of things. I am intrigued as to what is going to happen with Mark.

The quality is such that this story bears reading and reflection in different settings and formats.FA is desighned for maximum impact onscreen(full rich colours in a subtle range, offset by paul's open yet detailed drawing style.The story's pace jumps from slow/intimate to mind boggling insanity ensuring that the reader/viewer always enjoys the episode.)yet we still can enjoy it as a complete reading experience in it's printed format. Niiiiiiice. Holy hell the art is just... godDAMN Paul. Just Goddamn. Brilliant. Exquisite.

I assume that in his death moment Connor can be anywhere, tap into consciousness from any point in time and he chose to find Mark. Alice is the anchor point to find the furthest out that Mark went and when/how he came back. Mark, in the future, can tell Connor what happened/lay out the road map for him. Likely the road is literal since it's how Alice got to Whitechapel but it's also the perfect metaphor for time as we perceive it - there is behind and there is ahead and all exist but we (non-Freakangels, and it seems the typical FA mind) can only fathom one spot on it at once.

I've never read Midwich Cuckoos, but between my recall of Immanuel Kant and Madeline L'Engle I just can't stop smiling. This is a rich, delectable meal for the brain.

@stsparky and @Spooky Fanboy: Yes, Alice is probably going to be a central character. She was a normal human before her mind go "fiddled with". But now who knows what the unintended consequences of Mark's programming may be. Alice's intense gaze in the last panel of page five implies some serious turning of her mind-wheels.

Mr. Duffield's artwork continues to elevate an already fine story. The expressiveness of the faces is wonderful. You can almost see the thoughts in the characters heads. His silent panels say almost as much as the ones with dialogue, and sometimes even more. I always read the strips twice - once to race through and get the story context, then to linger over the art and get the detail that supports the broad strokes.

Alice's two panels are a fine example. Almost identical stance on her part, a nearly unreadable face in both. But the point of view slides around the the front and closes in on the face. If you watch the details and look for change, you'll find very little. But look again - something important has changed, and I don't think it's a continuity error.

Remeber that Mark is still knocked out after that buildingcollaps and held in that state by Kirk and Caz? So I suppose there is a sort of "subconscious plane" where the FA's can roam when they are "dead" or "recovering from dead" and that it is there where Mark and Connor meet. Connor only tries to decribe what he goes through, so that the others may understand more about themselves and the package.
I guess the most important thing they have to learn is, because they are unable to die in a normal way and the fact that only they have access to the package, they will have to work and live together and to cooperate to make things work. Somehow they have to realise that only together they are sort of complete, apart they are not. They have to put aside their differences and personal points of view and work together towards the same goal, even though I have no clue (yet) on what that goal may be.

Gosh, this is hard to explain...

@razrangel: being on a subconsious alternative plane does not automatically mean you instantly meet all others on that plane. Other dwellers may be on different locations in that plane so to speak. Another possibility: who has said that the state of what we know as "time" is the same there? For sometimes we see that construction with all FA's in silhouette placed on it overlooking the whole, that may be way off in future. So notions of "future", "present" and "past" may have no meaning there either...
It leaves many questions open, and I wonder how everything will be filled in eventually.

I've gotten sick in the week that's my favourite bar/venue's 20th birthday celebration week. Lots of free concerts. So I've been pushing myself to go and to drink with a fever and a sore troat, but after Thursday my body said THAT'S ENOUGH and I haven't been out of been for long since waking up on Friday. Have to take care of myself so I don't miss my mum's wedding (!!!) in a week!

As for yesterday's episode:

Wow. Some feel that the movie-like effects don't fit that well in comics, but I think it's awesome. Really. Also love the x-ray stuff, Paul.
Warren, Paul is your exceptionally brilliant art monkey and if you ever feel that the series need seven volumes and not six, think of humanity and don't unchain him just yet. And now for something completely different...

Creepy astral disco for the win! The color scheme in this reminds me of the opening pages of Grant Morrison's 'Invisibles', when King Mob is gobbling LSD and absorbing brain farts from the giant, disembodied head of John Lennon. It's beautiful and alien and you guys pulled it off perfectly.

So, every time an 'Angel goes to this place they hear the enormous and overwhelming sound of wings beating, or something similar. So, on the last page of this episode - does it look to anyone else like there's giant fuck off propellers turning behind the machine mountain in the background? I imagine that would make a bit of a racket, especially if they let KK make it.

( Just something weird I noticed, and any faith in it being related or even remotely correct is tenuous, at best... )

It's starting to look like considerable damage can be done to their minds/abilities in spite of being immortal. However , Arkady's return of focus of late may indicate that any damage is temporary.Still, I wonder if an attack on someone's autonomic functions is immenant now that Mark has pointed out this vulnerability. I wonder if the reason why he's talking to Conner is to manipulate him into being his 'attack dog' since his own control is apparently damaged? I could be wrong about this, it just seems to fit Mark's control methods to try something like this.

P.S.(I'd also like to apologise to all offended by my comments concerning people's intelect on this forum. I was attempting a sort of backhanded humour and fell flat on my face. I respect and enjoy all perspectives on this forum. I'll choose my words more carefully in the future.)

Alice's two panels are a fine example. Almost identical stance on her part, a nearly unreadable face in both. But the point of view slides around the the front and closes in on the face. If you watch the details and look for change, you'll find very little. But look again - something important has changed, and I don't think it's a continuity error.

I inspected these panels closely and finally found what it was you meant! At least, I think I do.

There was a green tent/structure to Alice's right in the zoomed-out panel. From the angle in the close-up of Alice (on page 5, I think), it should actually take up the majority of the background, but isn't there.

I'm not so sure this isn't a continuity error, though, because the close-up panel has a lot more visual impact with the sky behind Alice than if it were some dark green material?

Regardless, this week's installment was such an awesome mindfuck that I have changed from a long-time lurker to an actual participant here in Whitechapel. Looking forward to discussing more about this amazing webcomic with everyone. :)

I've found Karl has a patient, more relaxed pose while Kirk is showing signs of tension from his perceived responsibility and has some worry lines around his eyes and mouth. Also I think Karl has no head-stubble. (But Kirk's is invisible past a certain distance so that can fool ya.)

Not sure who mentioned this yet, but yes, Connor being the recorder of the crew is best prepared to come out of this experience with much more than any of the others.

Also - Mr. Duffield: admit it; you're really a Freakangel in disguise, and your recent illness was just your artistic superpackage unpacking a bit more. Go on, I won't tell anyone...

I don't know why so many have such a hard time telling Karl and Kirk apart--they look completely different to me. Karl has sharper features and is more emaciated looking than Kirk, even though they say Kirk goes for long periods without eating. They dress differently and have different mannerisms.

I don't think being bald automatically makes someone indistinguishable from another bald person, or we'd all me insanely confused if Arkady decided to wear shorts one day. Why are so many of them bald, anyway?
