hmmmm, i like your second pick more. The first is great
but straying on Brand New Heavies territory, but in a good way.

Alright i'm going to go slightly modern,
and by that i mean the early 80s !

As the 70s became the 80s new technology came along and
some Funk bands replaced their organic drum kits with drum
machines and drum pads,and reinforced their bass lines
with synth bass lines. The funk now ran on electricity!
One of these bands was the DAZZ BAND......

Now with the 70's, you have to be careful about straying into R&B or Disco. I mean, do you want it kept smooth and sexy, or do you want some real, stankalicious grooves?

A couple of the unsung ladies of Funk - Millie Jackson - not just a foul-mouthed comedian... the riff is pure Parliament, the groove is more on the Norman Whitfield tip (see the awesome "Carwash", OST) with the Muscle Shoals Players on horns:
