Funk: That sub genre of RnB that supplies the groove theories that power every single form of modern music..hip hop, drum n bass, house, everything would sound different if funk didn't exist. So let's take it back to the source...I want your favorite Funk songs..
But I really wanted to take it back to the ORIGINAL source
I was trying to take it back to the original tunes between: The late 1960s early 80s.With the 1970s heyday of course!
because after about 1984 Funk got fused with lots of other things and became The Minneapolis Sound ,which Prince gained his sound from. Then a became big part of New jack Swing
I want the pure old Funk..like this...
Graham Central Station - "Release yourself" [1975]
hmmmm, i like your second pick more. The first is great but straying on Brand New Heavies territory, but in a good way.
Alright i'm going to go slightly modern, and by that i mean the early 80s !
As the 70s became the 80s new technology came along and some Funk bands replaced their organic drum kits with drum machines and drum pads, and reinforced their bass lines with synth bass lines. The funk now ran on electricity! One of these bands was the DAZZ BAND......
Dazz Band - "Let it whip" [1982]
Dazz Band - "Let it whip" (2007 live version)
I like the Live performance, it starts anemically, then just builds and builds and doesn't really kick in till 3.28, then the crowd get involved. Looks like it was a great night.
Now with the 70's, you have to be careful about straying into R&B or Disco. I mean, do you want it kept smooth and sexy, or do you want some real, stankalicious grooves?
A couple of the unsung ladies of Funk - Millie Jackson - not just a foul-mouthed comedian... the riff is pure Parliament, the groove is more on the Norman Whitfield tip (see the awesome "Carwash", OST) with the Muscle Shoals Players on horns:
This is a great thread with really awesome rarieties going on, and Cymande, Funkadelic and James Brown were mentioned so the super real essential has been taken care of.
I'll try and edit back in youtubes later, but what I would add is Mandrill, Selda (as in the Turkish funk-protest Selda), a lot of posthumously released Jimi Hendrix cuts, lots of what's on Pomegranates comp which is the most important thing that was released this year.
That highlighters band- the funky 16 corners tune is awesome.I can't believe I never heard it. It MUST be sampled! Every little bit of it sounds as if it should be in a hip hop record. You guys did great.
Let's return to the originator of the Funk James Brown!
James Brown& JBs & Bobby Byrd - "get involved"
(Watch the bit when the groove changes in the middle of the song,at 0:50 it gets me everytime!)
