Last day of work before my "weekend" is always a bit rough. So I am pumping myself up on the bus ride by listening to some Folk Metal. Mainly Ensiferum, Finntroll, and Korpiklaani. Hopefully it will make the day a bit better!

Finally getting around to checking out this Das Racist chap. He sounds sleepy, in a kind of awesome way. This track sounds like he and Jay-Z are having a race to see who can fall asleep while rapping first. Likeably bizarre for mainstream 'ish.

picked up Soundgarden "Telephantasm" today. The packaging is pretty damn gorgeous and there's great liner notes. And for a greatest hits/retrospective album the tracks are well chosen and some rare stuff thrown in as well. All around great reminder of how crushing this band is. I could feel the songs possessing me. My car hasn't rumbled like that in a while! It also comes with a dvd of almost all their videos.

i've had one of their singles (Use Once Then Destroy) for years after hearing it on John Peel way back in '97 or '98 but i came across the album on some blog site last weekend. I'm glad i only bought the single but the album certainly doesn't suck and i've played it a few times this week.

got the new sufjan album from the bandcamp page he has running. have listened to the first 5 or so tracks. it's got some weird drum machine action happening, but I still like it. It's still the quirky sufjan that makes some gorgeous music and I think I'll have this playing in the background for quite some time to come...

Kylesa - Spiral Shadow - Usually when a metal band says their new album is more experimental and less heavy, it's a disappointment. This is one of the rare times when it's not.

Melechesh - Epigenesis - This is an album I can listen to over and over again. For those who have never heard of them, they're a black metal band from Jerusalem (recently relocated to the Netherlands to keep from being arrested so much). The music has just the right mix of Middle Eastern scales and influence combined with unrelenting metal to make it interesting without being too gimmicky.

Withered - Folie Circulaire - A beautiful strangled mess of a metal album. The kind of godawful racket that's easy for me to love and everyone around me to hate.

Soul Jazz and Metalheadz killed me in this battle, especially the surprise Katy B whitelabel.

The second half of this mix by Barry Cole is a superb blend of chill hip hop, funk, reggae, soul, and oddness which should really not go together. Nate Mars's portion was good too, but not nearly as finessed.

Discovered a band when I was in Portland, OR this week: All The Apparatus. Caught them playing on a streetcorner.

10-piece band with 2 accordions, trumpet, trombone, cello, electric bass, drums, guitar, misc percussion, lots of singers, and some instruments I couldn't recognize. Musically, they live in a universe they share with Tom Waits and early Decemberists, where Cab Calloway and Kurt Weill sometimes visit.

Bought their CD, which I'm happy to say is very good. Nothing could have made me happier than stumbling across something like that entirely by accident.
