anybody in here have any home projects that would fall under the purview of madness?
a little while ago i got my hands on some free 9V batteries, and given that i have no electronics that require them, i got myself a 9V clip and have been running currents through an assortment of things.
the remotely interesting ones so far:
a piece of pencil lead: it started smoking like crazy, some sort of liquid came off of it, and glowed a deep red
my knife: also smoked like crazy, shot a lot of sparks all over
water i was drinking: i found this quite shocking.
an LED from a broken flashlight: i blew it up, and melted it's insides.
i wish i had pictures, but i lack a camera. D: -

Does making a still in my kitchen count? Okay, my brother was the one who made it, but still. *ba-dump*
We've made absinthe, whiskey*from a bad batch of beer, not the proper way* and jet fuel so far. I think the next step is grappa.
The only crazyness would be the fact that it is a half-keg sawsalled open and sitting on top of the stove. The entire apparatus sprawls throughout the whole kitchen. Crazy copper piping and all. Our first condenser was filled with stones from Nootka Island for sentimental purposes, but it just gave the thing too much surface area and our test bottle of wine was distilled into a couple hundred milliliters of make-you-blind-juice. It went boom nicely though. -

I linked up all my table lamp sockets to a light-switch at the door, it is probably the best thing I have ever done. -

I took apart a window air conditioner, extended the refrigeration lineset, moved the evaporator to my computer cabinet and kept the condenser in the window just so I could run a 12000 BTU AC unit to cool my computer...
And only my computer.
I have no heat problems with my computer.

There was the time I decided to wire my brand new telly into my brand new amp and speakers for massive surround sound. It all sounded great until I turned on the CD player, and forgot the basic principals of electronics. I pumped a hell of a lot of wattage into the TV and blew the sound cards....
That was more stupidity than madness. I'd say madness was when I found an old moped and decided to get it running. Some ped-geek site suggested pouring some petrol into the cylinder head, replacing the spark plug and giving it a jolt to clear the tubes. Lacking precision or any real attention I pretty much covered the thing is gas, sat on it and kicked off. The engine exploded into life and sent me hurtling down the road with two-stroke fireball 6 inches from my bollocks -

Oh, sweet Crom! In my checkered career I've:
--made a 7 ft. potato cannon
--generated near-lethal amounts of chlorine gas in my parents' basement
--blown up a pumpkin with calcium carbide and water
--soaked the backyard with Diet Coke/Mentos spew
--walled in a doorway a la "The Cask of Amontillado" with empty Coke cans
--made gunpowder and nitrogen tri-iodide FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY (ahem!)
--and many other perversions -

In running with the whole "being a massive nerd" thing... I bought a Nerf sniper rifle and modded it so it shoots over twice as far as it's supposed to, and actually kind of looks like a rifle now (albiet a blue and orange one). That was fun.

When I was a child I discovered that if you take a desk lamp and place a watch battery where the bulb base goes, positive side down, and then turn on the lamp, the battery will become a projectile when you turn the lamp on.

Nitrogen tri-iodide! I thought I was the only one! Hehee. Though we left it to dry in the garage and went to play video games. We were in seventh grade. Dad comes home, drives his car into the garage only to be met with a large explosion and a great purple cloud. XD
Mmm. Potato cannons. I had a seven footer as well. Strapped it to the rollbars of my bright orange '73 VW Thing and fired rags into the air, then drove after them and caught them. Aaah. Country life. -

I never made anything more explosive than combining a little acetelyn and oxygen in a balloon, a little light, a lot of noise and not much else. I did build a compressed air potatoe gun that could fire golf-ball through a 1/2 inch of plywood when I was in high school. My mechanical science teacher gave men an A, my advisor asked me to see the counselor, something about building a home made seige mortar.
These days I just wrench on my bike and try to think of new things to run through my uncle's still. -

I recently modded an Altoids tin with a speaker, a potentiometer, and an audio jack so that I could have my own Personal Ambiance Device. Never go a day without your own background music again!
