    OK, I didn't want to clog up the regular monthly ARTIST'S THREAD, but I did want to share this experiment that I did this weekend in honor of 24 HOUR COMICS DAY.

    I've messed around with 24 hour Comics Day in the past, and had fun with it, but I wanted to take an alternate approach to it, given that I'm doing as much design as I am illustration/comic art these days. So I decided to set my self a challenge this past weekend; create 24 pieces of all new art in 24 hours. Any direction, any subject matter, any style, and any medium. For speed and faster interaction with the web, I did everything digitally, and posted each submission to DeviantArt as soon as it was done, to keep myself as honest as possible.

    Well, the experiment went pretty well. I did 2 sessions of 12 hours (one on Saturday, one on Sunday) and kept each piece to around 1 hour of design/drawing time. I made it to 20 pieces before my brain and arm and eyes just gave out, but I think I got a few good ones. See what you think...

    Here's a link to an 8.5" x 11" RGB, 300 dpi version of my "OH INTERNET" poster for you nice people at Whitechapel to download and print out. There should be plenty of data in it to allow for it to scale up to larger sizes and look reasonably OK. The file size as a JPEG is only 3.5 meg, so it should be an easy download. Enjoy!

    Excellent, and I always love your album covers. That depeche mode is wonderful.

    I agree that the depeche mode one stood out because it's so different from what we usually see here from you (the photographic element...). I like the "eat, sleep, love" one, the Krafterwerk one, and the "Oh, Internet" ones best, and the guy picking his nose is great, too. Oh, and the girl on the "paper bag" is interesting. It's interesting to see you use some of your fat, bold marker stuff in a digital way, like on the girl with the glasses. Cool stuff.

    I tried a 24-hour comic once, and didn't finish. I'm no good when trying to stay awake too long, but your way of doing two 12-hour sessions was a good one... Now you have to send them to Scott McCloud, or else it doesn't count...

    Beautiful as always, Paul. Your portraits are always absolutely gorgeous and the depeche mode album cover is simple yet incredibly fucking stunning.

    Thanks all. Jane had some flowers dying in a vase, so I scanned one of the petals and used it for the Depeche Mode cover. Funny what desperation for an idea will produce.

    These are great! I especially like the "Farah" portrait and the Kraftwerk piece.

    By the by, Paul -- would you have time in your schedule for some additional work in coming months? I'm working on a project that could use a professional artist/graphic designer, and would like to inquire about your availability and rates and such.

    Am very much liking the '...get the shotgun' image. Very reminiscent of how I feel at work sometimes!

    Also very inspired by the idea, I might try something similar with my musical instruments. 2 hours to make an instrument and write/record a song on it?

    Looks like you had a lot of fun Paul. I can't get away with a 24 hour drawfest until I finish the renovations I promised the rule keeper. I'm lucky to get a camping trip next month, maybe I can try for 24 in 24 in the sketch book.

    @FredG: Honestly, it all happened pretty unplanned; I had some activities fall through for the weekend, wife wanted to work all weekend in her studio, so I just decided to go for it. Probably won't happen again for another year, but it was good exercise. And it was exercise. I watched the clock, cut and edited ideas as fast as I could, trashed things and re-grouped as fast as I could to meet each one hour deadline. It was tough, and at the end of each session, I was dead on my feet art and mentally.
    But overall it was a good forced labor test, as I've felt sometimes that I cruise too predictably to solutions. Well, in this case, I burned out all my cliche solutions pretty quickly, and while there were techniques that kept coming back around, I was happy when I hit the wall, and was forced to innovate, or try something that was a tougher idea to bring around. Gotta keep the creative hamstrings limber, I guess.

    Really funny that there's so much love for the Depeche Mode cover; that was one I thought people would think I was taking the piss with.
