Had the weird experience of seeing issues of RED in a comic shop locally, but with new 'movie' version covers. Then I picked it up and looked inside and realized it had 'movie version' interiors, too. Completely different comic. I suppose I should have expected that, as they seem to make a comic of every movie now, I just don't pay that much attention anymore.

The audience laughed at Malkovich-with-the-bomb. Good.

Warren's still too hot for Hollywood. All of the REALLY brilliant stuff was cut out, but Warren warned us it would be.

The whole thing was frivolous, but that's true of many films intended for an international audience. Silly films can do very well overseas, because silly gags are easy to translate.

Expect ten more years of films with Dick Cheney as the villain.

Expect more translations of comic book films not involving costumes. Actors want to make money but they also want to show their face!

I agree with KittenVillage: there was a missed opportunity to exploit the current antiestablishment mood of the country two weeks before the election, but again, I don't know if you could translate that for the foreign market. And I don't know how many risks the studios are going to take in the current economic downturn. As it says in Warren's other thread, most studios passed on this as it is. All of the studios passed on KICK-ASS.

It didn't put enough faith in Warren's stuff. (Probably understandable given the nature of the market.) It did, however, put a lot of faith in its cast, and they delivered.

Considering what happened to JONAH HEX and SCOTT PILGRIM, considering what happened to other big productions that opened against JACKASS, this one is a slam-dunk.

Hope Bruce can talk Arnold into coming along for a sequel, so it can open in the summer.

Just saw it. Theater was pretty full for a Saturday afternoon in the suburbs. Slight annoyance of having an entire row of tweens chattering and giggling behind me...but whaddaya gonna do?
I definitely liked it. Was funny and entertaining. Well-paced. I felt that the editing style paid some kind of homage to the world of comics. Way more accessible to the average movie-goer than say Scott Pilgrim (which I loved).
Great to see so many top notch character actors sharing a scene. It was an entirely solid flick the theatre was well populated (about 120 people out of 150 seats) and people left amused and satisfied. Definitely a keep, and I'm certainly glad it didn't bomb!

Can't wait to own this one and watch it a few more times.

I kind of wish they had given the Sarah/Parker's character more of a connection with the CIA, as Moses' handler; it would have made her going along with it all more exciting and a tad more solid in the plot.

Mirren, Freeman and Malkovich seemed to be having a good time, especially Mirren. Every scene she was in made me happy beyond belief.

I do admit I had a "well Hell, there goes the black character" moment when Freeman took the bullet; still undecided about that. Again, I always wish that Hollywood would work to break that habit, intentional or not.

Good popcorn movie, but I still imagine that an actual unfiltered Ellis script on screen would burn my eyeballs out like at the end of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

1) Karl Urban needs to be cast as the lead of something.
2) Helen Mirren needs heavy weaponry. Well done flick over-all, thoroughly enjoyable action movie that didn't drag or, IMO, try to be anything but an action movie. I found the "The party has now moved to X city!" screen shots to be a little jarring (cinematic version of "telling, not showing"?) and, as usual, a little insulting; the audience, IMO, is generally smart enough that if a character drops the name of the city they are in during dialog then they'll get it. I think I agree with Paul Sizer's criticism about the black guy always getting it.

I did enjoy people graphically exploding by grenade, but then noticed the body count dropped dramatically until the finale. I was expecting more of a bloodbath.

Casting wise, I think it was spot on.
