Got the idea for painting a book from seeing some of Frank Chimero's book paintings on apartmenttherapy.com, and wanted to do something similar, and was then magically directed by a link in the comments section there to the artist Ray Fenwick, who also paints on book covers, although his are torn off of books beforehand... Anyway, I used Fenwick's typography work as a direct inspiration, but went a different way by actually using the content of the book on the outside (it's the last line of the book, which Irving always writes first, which I thought would be a cool little tidbit...).

And this is a painting I did for a body of work that I was trying to put together for a show, but it didn't really fit with the other wood ones I was doing, since it was more like my striped socks/scarf paintings that I did a few months ago, and I sold 3 of the paintings I was working on, anyway, so now I have to start putting together more work... But his glasses are the Reno sign from my town, Reno...

@kperkins, wow! you have a very good visual memory... yes, that´s one of the gates to the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) of Madrid & its inspired in a famous photograph from 1936. The poster originaly says "They won´t pass!" (¡No pasarán!), but the flames have burned the negative part changing a statement of intent into a fatal historical fact (Pasarán!)

I'm gonna beef up the portfolio - with a make believe game called Ragnarök - essentially Norse mythes (or what I can skim read at wikipedia) drawn as a large sci-fi style spectacle, this is, obviously, Thor. Initially The Ragnarök thing was just a way to give me some focus on what I was drawing, but I'm quite enjoying the whole exercise. So who knows.

(It's also solved my christmas card dilemma - Thor versus the Ice Giants I think...)

(minor rant: I'm tired of seeing these superbulky characters all over games that I can't identify with... which is probably why I prefer first person games.

Just a touch over 2 hrs. ArtRage and Photoshop, with initial pencils for character done in Sketchbook. Background is all personal custom PS brushes, touched up slightly with light/shadow.

I'm testing out some new technique theories, as well as the concept of a "microscene" for a type of art commission. So, while I could have put more time in it, I really didn't want to invest more than a couple hours, as a high detail piece wasn't the intention.

@jigsy q - I've got a couple books upcoming that I drew over the last two years.

One called LOVESTRUCK, about Cupid as a corporation and the people he employs to do his dirty work, due sometime next year from AiT/PlanetLar. It's done, just being proofed and edited and all that. It's with co-creator/writer Dennis Hopeless.

I also have a book I drew this year called DEADLINE, about an ex-black ops fellow whose family is threatened if he doesn't do some terrorist bidding, from Kickstart Entertainment (producers of WANTED) w/ writers B. Clay Moore and Seth Peck. It's also done and awaiting printing/distro.

I have a 4 pg short I wrote and did the art for that will be in next week's Hack/Slash: Trailers 2 one-shot.

I'm currently trying to finish up the drawing end of a series I wrote called SUICIDE SISTERS. Its a 3 issue yarn about 2 sisters traveling across Texas trying to find the devil so they can get their souls back. I'm drawing the last 14 pages of 96, then I have to color and letter the whole damn thing. It'll be out from APE Entertainment whenever I can get it finished.

I say all that, but I'm actually unemployed right now. :)

A lot of the sketches/drawings I'm posting are me wood-shedding different working methods and style stuff. Basically, I'm doing a small multi-panel painting based around the pattern of a Nautilus shell. Background is Tri-Art Liquid Mirror and iridescent stainless steel, with washes of phthalo blue and green. Then I stenciled the pattern on in phosphorescent paint (Tri-Art again), laid down a coat of gloss gel, and now I'm building up shapes on top of that with more gel. Once that's done I'll add more blue-green washes. @CinnamonAndSpite - I love the contrast of colors on that piece, and it's so very lush.

Interior art that I did for Savage Mojo's apocalyptic "Shanghai Vampocalpse" RPG setting. No clue if it was used, but I was pretty happy with it at the time. It's a hybrid mix of illustration, photo-compositing, texturing, and custom brush usage. I've been sitting on this one since April.

I've used Manga studio and Photoshop tweeking settings to achieve a brush look to fair results. This one is my favourite. I jiggered the Mandelbrot algorithm from its normal Z=Z*Z+C to Z+Z^3.141592653589+C, hoping to achieve some circular structures, and I found this weird bullseye at 2^72 magnification. It took about eight hours to resolve on my high end computer, using 4x4 antialiasing and 100,000 iterations per calculation.

@BettyBoolean - Well I like the pen tools, they are simply the best I've used, even when using massive files they are responsive. I've just upgraded to the EX version, which has a fair few more features than the Debut version, the perspective rulers are brilliant.
But there are loads of folk on here who ken much more about it than me, I hardly use PS and have never used Illustrator so can't comment. I think Mr.Sizer is an educator, he'd likely give you an overview of their individual merits etc if we all asked him bonny? ;)

Weird contest, though. WAAAAYYYYY too many random entries depending on votes to advance, with no filter system at all, so it's just hundreds or thousands of drawings (some are pretty good, but you have to wade through lots of crap to see them...) sitting there with no one to look at them. I am finally able to share this piece, a poster commissioned by the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry as a fund raiser for their 150th anniversary. This poster features the The Battle of Verièrres Ridge, Operation: Spring (July, 1944) where a small group of Canadian Tankhunters took on a position held by an SS Panzer Division. (though BattGuano's tanks are way cooler than my Mk IVs and Panzers).

Yes, the PIAT was a sort of steam punk weapon I guess, eh? Never thought of that, but it totally is. Spring-loaded bomb launcher. My Pop told me that when he was trained on a PIAT for WW2, that it was "quite a bear" to cock and load (225 lb spring), heavy and awkward to fire.
