I was flicking through a couple of (old British sf newspaper strip) JEFF HAWKE collections earlier, which reminded me to go back and look at Travis Charest’s SPACEGIRL experiment to see if he’d added some new strips. (JEFF HAWKE and SPACEGIRL somehow got associated in my head via something I wrote six months ago.)

I loved the idea of SPACEGIRL. Newspaper humour strips transferred to (and were exploded/deconstructed by) the web, but the old drama strips... not so much. SPACEGIRL was just the daftest thing in the world to do - revive the newspaper science fiction strip serial, and not even do it on a daily basis -- and I loved it for that.

If I knew anyone who’d fit it and would do it for free, I’d do one here on the site like a shot. (Or at least as soon as I thought of one.) Give it its own category. It’d still be nigh on impossible to read back effectively. But, you know, what the fuck. You do it for the idea. It’s nice when ideas are pretty and so simple the cat can operate them. But it’s not always necessary.

Look at the webcomics week thread on Whitechapel. Some of that stuff is raw as all hell, and some of the websites they sit on are frankly horrifying. But they’re doing it for the idea. So long as the idea gets out of their head and into the world, they’re winning. Not everything has to be smooth and shiny and run through user-experience wisdom. Sometimes, it just has to be done.

"So simple the cat can operate them." Yes, yes. A thousand times yes. My old writing partner always used to want to make things deliberately complicated and ambiguous because that's what he thought was "deep". Then he'd make me sum up his intricate and complicated ballet of stupidity in one sentence. And so, because he was never happy with ANYTHING, very little ever got done. Trust me, sometimes you have to wrestle over the correct article to employ and sometimes you DON'T. And knowing is half the battle. (The other half of the battle is kicking the living shit out of the enemy. But G.I. Joe never told you that.)
