Can anyone recommend sites that stream current TV shows free? Hulu is nifty if you're in the USA, but I'm in Toronto and it doesn't work here.

I watch a few on the network sites. ABC has an iPad app that works great, and I catch shows on the SyFy channel site. Been watching the old 80's Buck Rogers at lunch, really bad, but fun.

    Excellent. I'll take a look.

Hulu plus a proxy or VPN. I like Hotspot Shield. Free, one button to push, makes you look American for Hulu purposes.

what do you consider scam sites? like, the sort where they want you to register but never actually deliver content?
or just ones that seem to infect your computer with nasties? or just sites that stream tv shows regardless of permissions?

Sidereel may have what you're looking for, if you don't want to go down the proxy/VPN route. It can be a bit annoying having to click through a number of links to get to the actual video you're looking for (dead links etc) but it does have a good selection of shows.

This takes a little bit of work, but if you install XBMC (formerly Xbox Media Center), and then install the plugin Navi-X, you can find a ton of stuff to watch. However, it is all "user-contributed" and can be kind of hit and miss.

Grease Monkey -- Is there a specific reason you're looking for streaming sites instead of torrent sites? Because, if you're looking for legal ways to watch American tv shows up here good luck with that. Most of the sites that offer streaming are either blocked from Canada or breaking the rules.

@Cat - I tried Hotspot Shield but it disconnects itself after about 5 seconds whenever I try to run it. Thanks, though: I'll look into other proxies.
@Glukkake - by scam sites I mean the ones which infect your computer with malware like Linkpotato, which is a bastard to get rid of.
    @Sneak - thanks, I'll check it out.
@Finagle - Thanks. I'll look into that as well.
@Azabith - cheers, I'll add that to my list.
@Warped Savant - Streaming sites have the content I'm after straight away, without sitting around waiting for a torrent to become available and then to download it.

That being said, can anyone recommend a decent p2p now that Limewire's been closed down?

Streaming is useful for those of us who mysteriously cannot get torrenting to work on their computers.
  7.  (9135.12)
Never had a lot of luck getting torrenting to work. Another reason why I prefer streaming or P2P.

If you happen to have a buddy with a large music collection, by the way, there's the possibility of direct peer to peer sharing via Orb / Winamp Remote. Video quality is not terrific, but when my wife went to Egypt last summer, she was watching 90210 episodes off of the home media server using it. The service itself is free. Other possibilities if you have friends with large media collections would be using something like Hamachi (by LogMeIn, but an open source product) to do direct peer to peer networking, then using whatever media sharing you happen to have handy (Windows Media Center, iTunes sharing, etc) over the encrypted tunnel connection.

For P2P, my understanding is that the kids are using Frostwire now. I had great hopes for Waste a few years back, but it never really caught on, although it still seems to be a usable product.

I tend to cycle through the following all week for my background TV needs:
    globaltv.com - Global TV
    ctv.ca - CTV
    citytv.com - CityTV/A Channel
    foodnetwork.ca - Food Network
    mtv.ca - MTV
amctv.com - AMC - some of the videos are blocked, some are not. I was able to watch all of the old Prisoner series without issue, but not the newer one. They also blocked off Breaking Bad after a while.
    cbc.ca

If you don't mind poking around blindly or actually CAN read Chinese, also try toudou.com - they have mostly Asian shows, but some Western shows as well.

Netflix is also apparently looking to expand to Canada soon.

In terms of p2p, I use Soulseek but for music only.

In terms of streaming, the only shows I seem to stream are sports. For that, I use www.firstrow.net. To my knowledge, I've not got viruses or anything from doing so. There's wrestling there too. Oh, and I've just had a better look and it seems there's a TV tab through which there are streams of shows.

I don't know how well they work outside of the US, but Hulu and Fancast are good for catching up on stuff. You have to catch them at the right time though, because they rotate episodes and shows in and out periodically. Some shows that are really popular will be up there indefinitely (I used Fancast to catch up on IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA a lot), but they'll still swap episodes in and out.

All is well. I had a brilliant friend fix some issues with my computer which were preventing torrents from executing, and now I'm enjoying the benefits of high speed downloads.

This thread doe illustrate a real problem with the current state of online streaming, though - no TV Guide. Currently I have pretty much no idea where to watch a given, random show at any moment - and Googling for it inevitably leads to a pile of results from places such as outlined above.

Is there a reliable online TV Guide anywhere that actually lists where one can watch a current show?

I've been having great hopes for the promise of using XBMC or similar media centers. With XBMC, a source like Hulu or Netflix shows up as just another media folder, and the menu allows you to attempt to add the items to the overall media library, but I never get any results out of it. I'm just waiting for the day when I can pull up a menu and click "M*A*S*H*" or something, and the menu pops up and asks me which source I'd like to acquire it from, with free or pay options.

The current state of things with regards to licensing probably means it will be ages before this ever actually happens "officially", unless someone points out that TV Guide themselves or some other service already has this.
