If you happen to have a buddy with a large music collection, by the way, there's the possibility of direct peer to peer sharing via Orb / Winamp Remote. Video quality is not terrific, but when my wife went to Egypt last summer, she was watching 90210 episodes off of the home media server using it. The service itself is free. Other possibilities if you have friends with large media collections would be using something like Hamachi (by LogMeIn, but an open source product) to do direct peer to peer networking, then using whatever media sharing you happen to have handy (Windows Media Center, iTunes sharing, etc) over the encrypted tunnel connection.

For P2P, my understanding is that the kids are using Frostwire now. I had great hopes for Waste a few years back, but it never really caught on, although it still seems to be a usable product.

I don't know how well they work outside of the US, but Hulu and Fancast are good for catching up on stuff. You have to catch them at the right time though, because they rotate episodes and shows in and out periodically. Some shows that are really popular will be up there indefinitely (I used Fancast to catch up on IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA a lot), but they'll still swap episodes in and out.

This thread doe illustrate a real problem with the current state of online streaming, though - no TV Guide. Currently I have pretty much no idea where to watch a given, random show at any moment - and Googling for it inevitably leads to a pile of results from places such as outlined above.

Is there a reliable online TV Guide anywhere that actually lists where one can watch a current show?

I've been having great hopes for the promise of using XBMC or similar media centers. With XBMC, a source like Hulu or Netflix shows up as just another media folder, and the menu allows you to attempt to add the items to the overall media library, but I never get any results out of it. I'm just waiting for the day when I can pull up a menu and click "M*A*S*H*" or something, and the menu pops up and asks me which source I'd like to acquire it from, with free or pay options.

The current state of things with regards to licensing probably means it will be ages before this ever actually happens "officially", unless someone points out that TV Guide themselves or some other service already has this.
