(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

Just something I thought some of you might want to read. Apparently the Pentagon and the Navy are saying it wasn't them. that said, so it's definitely a missile and not either atmospheric phenomena, a contrail, a smaller rocket (maybe a hobbyist's rocket, maybe caltech shenanigans), and so on?

Possibly it was a misfire and the reason they're being so tight-lipped is because they hate admitting it when they screw up.

In that video the guy at the end speculates that it might be a demonstration. Yeah, maybe... But that idea doesn't sit right with me. Do we need to freak people out? Demonstrate what? Ass whoopin power? Because uh... Last I checked Asia was not exactly helpless. What would it accomplish? An alliance?

Then another expert suggested [seriously] that someone might have hit 'the wrong button'. Now that is over simplifying.

SeaLaunch was my first thought as well. But, when I checked their web site, it appears they haven't sent up anything since last April, and their launch schedule is currently suspended until late next year. In addition, they generally launch from much closer to the equator in order to take advantage of the earth's rotational "boost"; this launch appears to have been only a few tens of miles off the CA coast.

My guess is it was a U.S. sub-based launch, but DoD is in deniability-mode, either because there was some major F-up, or more likely because they're testing something, and needed to do it in the vicinity of Vandenberg AFB, which is just north of Los Angeles.
