This one's really just a bit of fun. Lots of you like the steampunk, so I thought we'd give it one more whirl.

Usual REMAKE/REMODEL rules apply:

No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

HOWEVER: I will allow the interpolation of ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS into the work.

No more than ONE submission by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

Now then. Pay attention:

Immerse yourself in the era of Steampunk, and the coal-fired industrial nightmare of Gotham, where is set the popular silent films concerning The Batman. Or even The Bat-Man, if you prefer.

There have been several such moving pictures to date, with titles like

THE MAGNIFICENT BAT-MAN
BATMAN RESPLENDENT
BATMAN, A FORMIDABLE CHAP INDEED
THE DARK KNIGHT, SPLENDID

and the like.

Your task is to design a poster, suitable for placement outside a cinematheque or other theatre, regarding one of these films. There are several in the series I have not mentioned, and you are of course free to make those up. I mean, use them wisely.

You have one week. Commence.

Darn it, I was hoping to sneak in here before Sizer detonated the thread.

I was going for sort of an Irma Vep meets The Shadow beautiful freak thing with Tesla science. I feel I could have gotten steampunkier about it. I guess I'm half-satisfied with it. Mostly, I'm just pleased by the Bat-Mite. The attempt at an amateurish bat-signal just looks like an amateur drawing of a bat-signal. Anyway: yay.

Had a lot of varying ideas, but really wanted to keep Batman pretty standard, from the get-go. I had sketched a top hat with bat ears, and a monocle-wearing Batman whose moustache was the batman logo..., but once I started sketching gear batarangs and got to the gear bat logo, I knew that was how I wanted to play it... Um... You know what I desperately want right now? for most if not all of these submissions to be part of a calendar. 36 month..maybe 48?

Is that possible? Sure each artist would have to give his or her own permission, license or whatever, but would it be cool with DC at this level of remix?

Don't be sad; remember that we're playing with one of THE most recognizable iconic characters in the world, and we are playing with someone else's toys, someone who is VERY protective of that particular toy. Paul_Van_Denton You're a nice guy.
The problem is I do not like to do something that was already done, or at least try not to.
Has to do with the profession I have.
And believe me if I had seen your picture, I would have tried another idea to do.
That is why I particularly like the metallic-flying-sidekick-Robin created by DBed, and I think it's a good original idea.

This has been an incredible week so far and it's not over yet. Too many great pieces to even try to pick favorites. If anyone at DC was paying attention and had a lick of sense they'd been figuring out how to get a steampunk Batman graphic novel on the schedule. The interest is obviously there. A google search results in pages and pages of sights devoted to the topic. And if they had just a drop more common sense they'd be asking Mr. Ellis to write it. Well done everybody.

I don't have the wherewithal to participate in these remake/remodel threads, though i take great pleasure in looking through them and marvelling at the skill and imagination the participants bring to bear on the challenges thrown up by the warped mind of Mr Ellis. This particular one has attracted some especially good entries, i hope you won't find it too patronising if i thank you all for your efforts.

@zachreddy - Your take reminds me vaguely of Brian Blessed from the old Flash Gordon movie, just in a Bat-Man costume...he looks like he loves his work. A little too much.

Great stuff this week all around. Hopefully my take ( which for once I don't actually hate ) will be finished today so I can get it put up here.

[EDIT: Okay, now I hate mine. It's the lettering - every fucking time. I just get irritated far too much by it - I don't know why. ]

This thread has "steamrollered" through so many levels of brilliance already and just when you think it can't get any better we get the Batsman - Top hole!!!

I'd really like to comment on every individual piece but it would take forever to do proper justice to them all, there's just so much quality on show and frankly there are far worthier judges than me.

In my perfect dreamworld I'd love to see everyone here given an opportunity to create a Steampunk batman short with the end results compiled into an anthology - though I guess the legal minefield that would need to be negotiated to see something like that happen would be paved with the smoking corpses of writers, artists and litigation lawyers. (That said I'd happily throw myself on a mine as long as I could take a few lawyers with me)

My Cintiq tablet has decided not to interface with any graphics program on my computer except paint, despite updating the drivers, so I did not get the chance to try out Manga Studio with this like I was hoping. (Although, I did get the chance to use my homeade tannic acid/oak gall ink, which was fun.) I miss the undo button.

I was having a hard time meshing the concept...exactly what timeframe is this? Silent movies were not until the early 20th century, right after the very end of the victorian era (Where steampunk is usually set) - so is it that the silent movie is an invention 50 or so years before its time via steam technology, or that a silent movie theater is doing a steampunk movie set in the past?
