Something really only to salve my curiosity, here.

It's something I've been thinking about for a while now, but how many of the current Whitechapel denizens also posted regularly on the old Warren Ellis Forum and The Engine?

I've seen a few people mention that they lurked around one or the other, but I haven't seen many who've confessed to posting on all three.

Almost said something stupid about not recognising anyone. Stopped myself just in time.

Coincidentally, I wrote an article a few weeks ago about the WEF, and my short period as a member there. It's in Flemish (=Dutch), but Google Translate is your friend.

I remember coming in at the end of the "Fuck You Fraction" meme, through 9/11, right to the end of the messageboard. Met a lot of interesting people, like Wooller from ninthart, Arni from nextcomics, and through Arni I got to discover that young, multi-talented, whipersnapper Ben "Witchity" Templesmith.

I'm really quite interested about the journeys a lot of people in this thread have made from one forum to another, and quite annoyed that I managed to miss some things along my way.

For myself I wandered into the WEF sometime in 2001, I think. Joined the Engine when it began it's brief existence. And, like here, I would drift in and out, read a lot and occasionally post. I even, on one memorable occasion, managed to skirt trouble on the Engine, which was strange.

I was introduced to The Engine about six months after its founding by another cartoonist who later got herself banned for not shutting up. I think I annoyed everyone there quite thoroughly before it closed up.

I hope it continues a long and fruitful existence then - there's no other place on the internet quite like a Warren Ellis forum.

I wasn't into comics at the time of WEF, but was a regular reader and semi-regular poster at The Engine. I liked having to use real names, and I liked the general tone of the place too, though it seems to me that the spectrum of discussions is broader here (maybe I just spend more time here though).

Whitechapel's had steady traffic for the last... I dunno, 18 months? In general, message boards are going away, because there are so many more and simpler ways to connect with people and have conversations now. I think there'll be communities around Things, like WC, for some little while to come.

The Engine put up with a lot of my lurking. I'm pretty sure I posted a handful of times, but I'm awful like that. It's rarely because I don't have anything to say, but usually because what I do that is of any value is far too jumbled in with the gin. That and intimidation, perhaps. I meet so many new people in my day to day life, one should think that the screen of the intertubes would make it even easier. Strangely, not so much.

The Engine: I, too, enjoyed the pro's dropping by. Truth be told, Warren's message boards are the only ones I've ever really frequented, because while they each had/have individual qualities and rules, the way he runs 'em keeps them habitable.

I used to hang out a bit on the WEF, and I sort of lurked a little bit during the Engine days, but didn't really spend as much time as I had the WEF. Work issues, mostly. In the WEF days, I was pretty much unemployed, and during the Engine days, I was pretty busy. Nowadays, not so much. I just haven't been as sociable of late. Got old.

I was around and chatted on WEF and went to WEFUK drink-ups while I was over there (Warren actually showed up at one and while drunk I can remember talking to him about BLACK HAWK DOWN), I want to say that was on Father's Day 2001. I lurked on the Engine and mostly lurk here. Made loads of friends on WEF and the sat communities and then ended up meeting my wife at a concert I went to because a fellow WEF member had recommended Belle and Sebastian to me. So in a convoluted way Warren was the butterfly who set in motions the things that lead to me meeting my wife in Sept 2001.
