My Metal list. A little long :D

Preface; doing these ranked year end lists is a bit of labor, a lot of fun, and sometimes a bit unfair it seems. Dealing with as many albums as released, trying to listen to as many possible and listen enough times in context against or with one another, and to then rank a finite number? Limiting the number to ten is purely ludicrous from my viewpoint and completely unnecessary. The reader if looking for a top ten is free to disregard anything after fifteen. I am counting to twenty-five because it just feels right.

1. Nokturnal Mortum – The Voice of Steel – technically ’09 as released the last week of year in Europe. I considered it a ’10 release for last year’s list being as late as it was, and thus this year as well. I think this is their best yet. It’s truly amazing and the shit they pull off with this one. It’s like nothing I’ve heard done in the genre before. I don’t think anyone else could do it. A true milestone, not only in their careers but across the spectrum. They may have established themselves across a decade and a half, but with tVoS they fucking slay the competition here and now.

2. Anathema – We’re here because we’re here – seven years in the making and well worth the wait. It’s a very emotive, complete and profound release. Also the incredible production really is worth noting. A+ all around for such a unique and expertly recorded release.

3. Odroerir (German for the Islandic 'Óðrerir', vessel for the mead of Wisdom and Poetry in old Nordic mythology) - Goetterlieder II – a shame this release is really under just about everybody’s radar. It has a little bit of everything in a folk Metal release other than abundant BM/DM extremities and is one of my favorite FM releases in years. To me this is a true no-bullshit celebration of heritage, nature, and existence through Music.

4. Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits – a perfect album from Slough Feg. I love everything about it. Truly, this is a modern masterpiece of traditional Metal if I have ever heard one. They are at the top of their game and perhaps the best American band going right now in my opinion.

5. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit – mesmerizing. Still absorbing it really. It has met expectations although it has peculiarities about it that strike me as cause for thought, which is good. Overall I like that it takes some chances and yet balances so very well.

6. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier – if ever a Maiden album took awhile to grow on me this is it. Once it started to sink in I found a solid, attentive, and worthy effort and one that is memorable and brings me much happiness with each listen.

7. SigArTyr – Godsaga – this is a release that wears its influences like badges of honor, and does them magnificently with justice and reverence. Epic is a word I don’t use opften but applies here. Inspiring and triumphant!

8. Melechesh - The Epigenesis – a near perfect melding of extreme Metal and Middle Eastern authentic sounds as I interpret them. Really interesting and absorbing, and not easy to do but they do it so well.

9. Watain - Lawless Darkness – one of but a few Black Metal releases I really enjoy listening to this year. At the top of them all, and the top of their game IMO

10. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones – really surprised I like this album as much as I do. It’s as ugly as anything released in memory: vengeful, angry, and sinister. Not usually my bag surface wise, but this is an exception as it feels truly of opposition.

11. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time – just another fantastic piece of work from the masters of this genre. I don’t think anyone does it better in the game concerning Power Metal.

12. Weapon - From the Devils Tomb – surprising release. As near a perfect mesh of Black and Death Metal as I can think of, with the occasional eccentricities outside of the box thrown in liberally to spice it up just enough.

13. Ludicra - The Tenant – the first Ludicra album to really do it for me. It’s a solid, dark, brilliant little gem of a release with a lot to offer and discover with each listen.

14. Alcest - Écailles De Lune – lots to love about this release, the way it builds and has all these facets. Lots not to like about it such as it’s short and the latter songs just kind of go along aimlessly (though intended to I think) and drift off. Compared to how good it starts it comes off a bit too uneven for me.

15. Diamond Eyed Princess – Korlguelaal – the latest entry of my list. Something about it appeals to me but I can’t really say what it is. It’s not innovative or really unique in any way, just has a certain charm to it I can’t put my finger on that appeals to me.

16. Aiumeen Basoa - Iraganeko Bide Malkartsutik
17. Dawnbringer – Nucleus
18. King of Asgard - Fi'mbulvintr
19. Bifröst – Heidenmetal
20. Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth
21. Drudkh - Handful of Stars
22. Wuthering Heights – Salt
23. Heidevolk - Uit Oude Grond
24. Borknagar – Universal
25. Winterfylleth - The Mercian Sphere

Perfect cold weather record. The new one feels more meandering and after listening to it a few times, I realized I couldn't really remember anything about it.
Against Me! - White Crosses - I held out against the fairweather fans and stuck by them through the new record deal and New Wave, but this one was pretty meh. A few good songs, but mostly limp.
The Creepshow - They All Fall Down - I'm giving this one a bit more time to grab me, but so far nothing on this has charged out of the gate like their last album did.

Going to stick in a mention for SKRILLEX - SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES here. I've seen a lot of people panning it for being dubstep of the filth / midrange wobble kind. Frankly, I couldn't care less - it's energetic, filthy as all hell and the drops inevitably make me want to bang my head like a fool / punch something. Plus, the bass on "Scatta (feat. Foreign Beggars & Bare Noize)" sounds like a Decepticon having a stroke. It's not big, it's not clever, but it is a hell of a lot of fun. Check out his remixes as well - LA ROUX - IN FOR THE KILL and LADY GAGA - ALEJANDRO are personal favourites.

ALMOST perfect. A few more hard-edged sawtooth waves wouldn't've gone amiss...)

Other than that I've not really been impressed this year. Pretty much a big win for soundtracks though.

The fact that every single track on every one of the (nine and counting) albums are fan-composed (with the one notable exception of a very loose cover of How Do I Live Without You?) is also something that deserves attention. MS Paint Adventures is paving a new path, of an innovation not seen since Kid Radd.

I should also mention how disappointed I was by the new Of Montreal. One or two exceptional tracks aside, the album falls flat.

I have already posted here once, hope it's ok if I drop one more album recommendation in here. Much more for the metalheads, this one, although I suspect the concepts behind the music may be of interest to a few others here. The album in question is THE MERCIAN SPHERE by WINTERFYLLETH. I've seen the band describe themselves as "Anglo-Saxon Heritage Black Metal", and I should probably note at this point that yes, this has been the source of a fair bit of trouble for the band, due to this being interpreted as some kind of racist statement. And no, it's not. I cannot find a copy of the interview now, but they defended the concept brilliantly in an interview in ZERO TOLERANCE a few months back. Essentially, the gist of it is that black metal has often looked to the past for inspiration, and as an English band they have a strong interest in exploring English history, much as Norwegian black metal bands often focus on Norwegian history. They don't think any less of other cultures, they've simply chosen to focus on English history because they feel they have more of a personal connection with it.

As to the concept behind the album itself, a quote from a brief interview with the band (which can be found here):

The concept of the album is mainly (with a few song exceptions) based around the Codex Exoniensis of Anglo Saxon poetry and features adaptations of a number of great stories from within it, such as "The Battle of Brunanburh," "The Ruin" and a three part song based on "The wanderer."

Finally, my favourite song off the album, the wonderful THE FIELDS OF RECKONING (note: the sound quality here doesn't quite do it justice)

it sounds like desperation. such a good album that i totally didnt like that much at first. but once i understood it was not as fast as their other music and got into the overall feel it got a LOT of playtime. the DANGERS lp works a very similar theme, but through a modern and more metallic hardcore sound as opposed to the deliberate retro of the CEREMONY lp. DANGERS is definitely more angry lyrically, whereas CEREMONY is more vague/self loathing. i believe DANGERS are from somewhere near you as well?

Hrm. Two of the best albums I bought this year were from LAST year... Røyksopp's "Junior", Basement Jaxx's "Scars" and Mew's "No more stories were told". Soooo let's see.

Gorillaz's (or would that be without the S? Gorillaz'?) "Plastic Beach" was good. I'ma be all nationalist and nominate a buncha Norwegian albums, though. Mainly because they're damn good.

Susanne Sundfør's "The Brothel" is just amazing. I wasn't a fan of her previous stuff, but this one's just all over the place in a good way. There's not a single track on it that's not good.

Weirdly, this sombre tune was the first single from the album.

Shining's "Blackjazz", while not quite the masterpiece that their previous album was, is still pretty danged nice. It's... pretty much what it says on the tin. Blackmetal-jazz.

"My Chemical Romance" win the "awesome song that made me buy their album which then turned out to be okay but not as awesome as the song" award with "Na Na Na". I mean, I like the songs and all, but that voice-warping thing they do with the vocals just gets tiring after a while, and they do it in NEARLY EVERY DAMN SONG. I'd like a "less vocal warping" version of the album, please. Maybe they'll do a live version.

Røyksopp came out with a new album called "Senior", which was all right, but nothing all that special. Felt like a B-sides album.

 @ Internaut

I'm deadly curious about Eros - I just hope they eventually release it regardless (in a terrible, entirely consumerist not-giving-a-shit-about-artist-rights kinda way). I would put my money on it being more Saturday Night Wrist than Diamond Eyes but it was probably a stepping stone in this direction too.

On reflection I'm inclined to agree with you, it is really a continuation of Around the Fur. Which isn't a good thing. It's an awesome thing. Around the Fur is probably more consistently my favourite.

@ twentythoughts

I'm in total agreement about "Na Na Na." The album is okayish, but that song is simply brilliant. I wanted an album of that. Looped. 16 times, in progressively louder, more obnoxious performances. Perhaps doing the pop thing and ending with a slow acoustic ballad version...

I always think: Oh crap, did I listen to ten albums this year? I always feel like I'm missing something obvious. Still, this year was easier than most... I think. It's very pop.

Nina Nastasia - Outlaster
Kimonos - Kimonos
Sleigh Bells - Treats
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Janelle Monae - The Archandroid
Big Boi - Sir Luscious Leftfoot
Tokyo Jihen - Sports
Buffalo Daughter - Weapons of Math Destruction
Mass of The Fermenting Dregs - Zero Comma, Iro toridori no Sekai

There you go! A nice round ten too!

There's a bunch of albums hanging around the edge of that list too. I've only just started listening to Deftones - Diamond Eyes, after a friend kept banging on about it. Never listened to them before, but it's growing on me with each listen. The MCR album is fun, but yeah, struggles to live up to Na Na Na. That album for me has a fantastic song at the start, a fantastic song in the middle and a fantastic song at the end, and they kind of buttress up the rest of the record, making it seem better than it probably is. I really liked the first three songs on Kele's solo album, but it drops away too much after that. Almost the same for EGO WRAPPIN's new album. Woven Hand - The Threshingfloor is great too, actually, that should maybe be in there. Nah, I preferred Ten Stones more. Browsing end of year lists there's a lot I really want to check out, and a bunch of albums like Flying Lotus and Gorillaz that I kept meaning to check out and kept forgetting to.

Oh, and away from albums I really enjoyed Ash's A-Z series, I imagine it works better as they released it than as an album. Also the Japanese electro-pop group Perfume released three fantastic singles this year that haven't been collected on an album yet.

(Cut and paste from my LJ I'm afraid. There was a meme. What can I say?).
Disappointment of the year:
MGMT – Congratulations
What on earth were you thinking? This is bobbins. It’s like prog, but without the Wagnerian lunacy that is prog’s redeeming feature. From the interviews they’ve given, it seems as if they have decided pop music is beneath them. Wrong decision.
The sound of a moderately talented indie band disappearing up its own arse.

Honourable mentions:
LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
Don’t get me wrong, I love LCD, but they have now made the precise same album three times. It’s a very fine album, but a fourth time would be jumping the shark. James Murphy seems to agree.

Holy Fuck – Latin
Doesn’t make the cut because it’s not quite as good as “LP”.

Darkstar – North
Elegiac, piano led synthpop, not dubstep at all. Doesn’t make it because the best tune on it is a Human League cover, and because live, the singer is quite annoying.

M.I.A. - /\/\ /\ Y /\
Panned by the critics, unfairly, I feel. “Teqkilla” and the Sleigh Bells sampling “Meds and Feds” are as good as anything she’s ever done. Doesn’t make it because of the cod-reggae bollocks of “Story to be Told” and “It Takes a Muscle”, and because it was utterly eclipsed by the live show with added BASS.

Coloureds – Cameleopardalis
Local boys produce an excellent EP, which doesn’t make it because, being an EP, it only has three tracks (plus three remixes, but frankly two of them aren’t that great).

So, anyway, to the utterly subjective best albums of the year, in reverse order.

10) HEALTH - ::DISCO2
Remixes of last year’s “Get Color” by the likes of Salem, CFCF and Tobacco plus new track “USA Boys”. HEALTH continue to work the Indie/Metal/Electro crossover genre. This album is approximately a million times better than that sentence makes it sound. Awesome live.

9) New Young Pony Club – The Optimist
A make or break album for NYPC after jumping record labels and losing the guy with the porn star tache. Tahita introduced the live show with “Hello, we’re New Young Pony Club….back from the brink”. Hopefully this album sold enough to keep them going because it’s lovely, ditching the sarcastic spoken word vocals and allowing her to actually sing, which she turns out to be quite good at. Maybe now they can stop endlessly rereleasing “Ice Cream”.

8) Gorillaz – Plastic Beach
“Demon Days” was critically lauded but for some reason didn’t quite grab me. No idea why. This, on the other hand, hit the spot. Best track – Glitter Freeze, a glam rock stomp featuring an incomprehensible rant from Mark E Smith.

7) Chew Lips – Unicorn
This won’t be in everyone’s top ten. Fairly standard Kitsune female fronted electro, doesn’t even contain the <s >hit</s> critically acclaimed singles “Solo” and “Salt Air”. In because I keep coming back and playing it again, because it’s gorgeous.

6) Salem – King Night
Call it Drag, call it Witch House, call it Night Bus – this is the genre that defined hipsterism in 2010. Equally, it is the genre that those same people will drop like a hot potato in 2011. The critics who loved this album will be saying “Salem? Never heard of them, and besides, they were always shit”.
To be fair, the band haven’t helped themselves, with a string of irritating interviews and atrocious live performances, but this is a brilliant album that deserves better than the already-nascent backlash. Enjoy it while you can.

5) Tobacco – Maniac Meat/Mystic Thickness
Tobacco is the side project of some guy in Black Moth Super Rainbow, who I’d never heard of before. This album basically consists of huge basslines, crunchy synth chords, and noise. One of the tracks, “Creepy Phone Calls”, also crops up as a remix on the HEALTH album. They have three completely different tracks all called “Nuclear Waste Aerobics”.
That is all you need to know about Tobacco.

4) Tearist – Tearist
Like an electro version of The Creatures (minimalist Siouxie Sioux side project) consisting of simple synth lines, krautrock style drum loops and incomprehensible vocals. Nothing about it should work, and yet there is something oddly compelling about it. Another record I keep coming back to and playing, and the only record ever to have prompted me to buy a booster pack from eMusic becasuse I just couldn’t wait for my monthly downloads to clock before grabbing it.
The second witch house act to make this year’s top ten. There would probably be more if the acts concerned would release actual records I could buy instead of making me chase them through obscure internet forums (are you listening, White Ring?). I guess I must be a hipster then. This sounds nothing like the Salem record. It’s almost as if these bands aren’t that similar at all but have been pushed together into an artificial genre by lazy journalists but THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN.

3) Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles (II)
In an interview in the Guardian, the famously grumpy Ethan Kath took great offence when the interviewer suggested that he writes great pop songs. He is wrong.
This record is ravier than a ravey thing. At a rave. Like the first album, it has a series of instantly memorable hooks which have been corroded almost, but not quite, into unlistenability. Works astonishingly well live.

2) Sleigh Bells – Treats
This record consists entirely of stomping beats, repetitive lyrics and enormous riffs. The production sounds like the whole thing has been fed through the automatic gain control on an old tape player. You remember, that button that cut out everything except the drums whenever there was a snare hit and rendered everything else unrecognisably distorted. It is insane. It is also a great pop record.
Somewhere there is an alternate universe in which Sleigh Bells and Crystal Castles duke it out for the Christmas Number One spot. I wish I lived there.

And finally….drum roll….

1) These New Puritans – Hidden
Yes, I know, it’s topped everyone’s list this year. That’s for good reason. This is a record of astonishing ambition that pretty much carries it off. Features a lead single – their best hope of an actual hit – seven minutes long, veering from taiko drum enhanced dancehall to Britten-inspired woodwind. The rest of the album is the same, only more so.
Brought to life at the Barbican where there was much enthusiastic smashing of watermelons (duct taping cream crackers to a watermelon then hitting it with a hammer sounds like a skull exploding, see?) and a giant drum taller than I am.
Taking to the NME Barnett floated the idea that the next record will be three minute pop songs. I have no idea what a three minute pop song is like in his world, but I can’t wait.

On constant rotation at home!)
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs (Not as epic, a lot more intimate...still a rather beautiful piece of work)
Muse- The Resistance (Mad & rather self indulgent, but that's what makes it!)
Autechre- Oversteps (Cold, deep & rather effective...a return to form?)
Daft Punk- Tron:Legacy OST (Pretty damn nice work, wish it had a bit more electronic madness but still up there!)

After reading everyone's lists it seems I missed out on quite a bit!!!! I have some catching up to do!

@Ryan Burton That song was the best thing about true blood, but I didn't know who the performer was. I'll have to check out the album later.Thanks.

Stream: Bangs and Works Vol. 1, A Chicago Footwork Compilation. The dance sound of the decade. It's nice to have a good mix in one place and lots of great tracks I've never heard before. Or as they say a "Document". It stinks that the most ripped off aspect of the sound is the skittering beats. There is so much more going on. You can hear It's Gonna Rain, Oval, Miami Bass, Illbient(haha, what) and more. The polyrhythms! Or the omnivorous, non-ironic sampling. The aggressive sampling as a tool to reclaim the audio we are bombarded with goes way beyond the mashup. It's all very exciting conceptually. Most importantly I can crank it up and dance like Ian Curtis.

Mark Fell - Multistability most psychedelic listening experience. His UL8 album had a better last 1/3rd though.

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh. There were just so many good opportunities to play to this.

Individual tracks: Crystal Castles - I am made of chalk. I kept coming back to this song. Whenever I listened to it I felt regret for all the stupid things I've done. Pretty cool. The rest of the album did nothing for me. K'naan - Wavin' Flag. Uhh, wait, did this get released this year? Well, I heard it this year and it makes me feel great and brain damaged, so I hope it did.

Just listened to My Chemical Romance - Na Na Na, nice. I'm gonna search the thread now specifically for more metal and generally for awesomeness. I couldn't find the time to keep up this year or even really know where to look anymore. Playing two Deathspell Omega tracks at once sounds great right now.
