I definitely need to keep myself more aware of the music scene cause I really would love to hear him play live next time he swings through NYC. And its always nice to meet another Dax fan, I've been following since my friend turned me on to Acid Bath in 04, they were of course already done so I looked to Agents of Oblivion, also already broken up. But I kept following and I am glad he is still putting stuff out.
Yeah, if you get the chance, don't miss him live. I've seen both Deadboy and the Elephantmen and his solo show, and he's just plain magic live.
Back on topic (sort of), I'm seeing other sites posting their year-end best-of lists, and they are largely atrocious. Was good music that hard to find this year?
@infomancer/MaC, I saw him earlier this year (September?) in New York and he was PHENOMENAL.
New Julie Christmas is spinning on repeat in my apartment. And on my headphones. It's making me listen to tons and tons of Made Out of Babies as well. I can't wait until THEY play live again. Hands down one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
On a totally different note, I've also been listening to Robyn's new album. It's pretty solid.
Going to stick in a mention for SKRILLEX - SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES here. I've seen a lot of people panning it for being dubstep of the filth / midrange wobble kind. Frankly, I couldn't care less - it's energetic, filthy as all hell and the drops inevitably make me want to bang my head like a fool / punch something. Plus, the bass on "Scatta (feat. Foreign Beggars & Bare Noize)" sounds like a Decepticon having a stroke. It's not big, it's not clever, but it is a hell of a lot of fun. Check out his remixes as well - LA ROUX - IN FOR THE KILL and LADY GAGA - ALEJANDRO are personal favourites.
@Dorkmuffin. You know, this year music was really hard to find for me, in so far as not much new stuff I heard, anywhere, remotely excited me. Don't know why, it just seemed like a lacklustre year personally, but I'm pleased it was a good or even great year for some.
The only albums I heard from 2010 that I played more than about 5 times were "Teen Dream" by Beach House. "Big Echo" by Morning Benders and "Plastic Beach" by Gorillaz.
Of what I've heard (and can remember off the top):
Tobacco - "Maniac Meat" (trip-hop) Caribou - "Swim" (electronica with real instrumentation) Phantogram - "Eyelid Movies" (if you like Portishead then here is a slightly happier version) Matthew Dear- "Black City" (he leveled up big time) Crystal Castles - (exponentially better than the first, saw them live, ejaculated) Danny Brown - "The Hybrid" (the only hip-hop even making it for me this year...sad) Fang Island - (happy, epic, & HAPPY, instrumental rock anthems) Lazer Sword - (truly, the new school of electro)
I've gotten more music that I've loved this year than I have in the few years prior, but still haven't had time to dig very deep:
Superchunk-Majesty Shredding Drive-by Truckers-The Big To-Do Hold Steady-Heaven is Whenever Gaslight Anthem-American Slang Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks
And that's about it [EXCEPT THAT TED LEO RECORD THAT I HAD TO GO BACK AND EDIT IN]. Everything else in heavy rotation came out last year or even further back.
Thanks to everybody who's posted, though--I now have more than a couple 2010 releases to check out.
So jealous. He was here in September and I didn't know?! I am soooo out of the music loop, it would be embarrassing to mention the "newest" music I have listened to. Or actually impossible, cause I couldn't tell ya.
Disapointed by most of the stuff coming from the mainstream / alt.rock camps this year. Grinderman 2 has some alright songs, but left me cold for the most part. Seemed like a year for small EPs, individual tracks and remixes to me. There were a few notable exceptions.
