Alright Whitechaplains, it's nearing the end of the year, it's time to start whipping out those best-of lists. What audio manipulations did you end up loving this year?
My list would read (in no particular order):
Dax Riggs - Say Goodnight To The World Grinderman - Grinderman 2 High On Fire - Snakes For The Divine Deftones - Diamond Eyes Murder By Death - Good Morning, Magpie Gaslight Anthem - American Slang Kylesa - Spiral Shadows Melechesh - The Epigenesis Coliseum - House With A Curse Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth
MCR - Dangers Days (wooot!) The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards (fuck yeah, this one jams so hard) Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth - Mostly just agreeing with you. I didn't replay it obsessively, but it's a great return to the form of the first 4 albums. NIN - Pretty Hate Machine [remastered] :P
I'm not done with the list yet, but so far I liked the following:
Four Tet - There Is Love In You Vampire Weekend - Contra These New Puritans - Hidden Massive Attack - Heligoland Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks Shearwater - Golden Archipelago Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat the Devil's Tattoo Gayngs - Relayted The Flashbulb - Anboreal Girl Talk - Any Day Eels - Tomorrow Morning Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening

These were the long-players that I rated the most, in order of perfection.
Crystal Castles (II) - Crystal Castles Romance Is Boring - Los Campesinos! (needed two tracks taken out at the middle, but otherwise lovely) There Is Love In You - Four Tet (I think "Love Cry" is VERY overrated, but everything else is golden) Sir Lucious Left Foot - Big Boi (Nothing new as great as the stuff that was leaked, and some terrible decisions mangle a few of the tracks, but otherwise a pretty good package)
I'm more of a singles person. A list of my faves from 2010, plus some talk, over here.
Dead Mechanical - Addict Rhythms The Arrivals - Volatile Molotov Mayflower - Second Best Sunsets The Measure (SA) - Notes None More Black - Icons The Menzingers - Chamberlain Waits The Credentials - Routines Off With Their Heads - In Desolation Dangers - Messy, Isn't It? Weird mix of stuff this year, and I know I'm leaving out a lot of stuff that I was really digging the first part of the year.
Good stuff, no particular order. Needed to represent the electro-pop side of things on the forums...
MASSIVE ATTACK: Heligoland Much maligned, but still sounds really good on its own merits.
GIL SCOTT HERON: I'm New Here Best unexpected production and artist combination of the year.
HOT CHIP: One Life Stand They just keep writing better and better catchy tunes.
GORILLAZ: Plastic Beach This should have self-destructed under its premise, but the thing just worked. Like REALLY worked.
BOMB THE BASS: Back To Light Getting clean was the best thing to happen to this former 80's DJ/producer.
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM: This Is Happening Album of the year for me. James Murphy working through a shitty year and still producing such a great solid album. The DFA label has become my new "automatic purchase" label.
JANELLE MONAE: The ArchAndroid Leave her alone and let this young woman grow into the genius that she's given us glimpses of via this album. A new hope for the true next gen R&B artist.
THOMAS DOLBY: Oceanea EP Back in form after 20 years off. OK, I AM biased, but this is good stuff, folks.
MATTHEW DEAR: Black City WOW. Matthew channels Bowie and 80's dark synth with impressive, cohesive results.
UNDERWORLD: Barking Solid album, back on form from "Oblivion With Bells".
CARO EMERALD: Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor Big Band Boogie Woogie re-thought with current club production.
KISSES: Heart of the Nightlife A boy, a girl, a Casio and some really great, sweet songs.
SHIT ROBOT: From The Cradle To The Rave Someone's been raiding the crates from 1985, and remaking great music because of it.
7" VACCINE-human hatred ICE NINE-nobodys son UNITED NATIONS-never mind the bombings, heres your six figures VEINS-tape WALLS-stare at the walls
12" DANGERS-messy isnt it? CEREMONY-rohnert park AEROSOLS-s/t PUNCH-push/pull i need a little more time with it, but i would say the new RUN WITH THE HUNTED goes there too. just bought it from the band last friday, so it hasnt really settled yet.
the song of the year for me is a tie between SICK by CEREMONY and NA NA NA (na na na na na na na na na) by MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.
the esteemed category MOST BRUTAL BREAKDOWN goes to the song FIXATION on the aforementioned PUNCH lp. shit is rugged.
i actually listened to CANCER KIDS lp more than just about everything else this year...
Preface; doing these ranked year end lists is a bit of labor, a lot of fun, and sometimes a bit unfair it seems. Dealing with as many albums as released, trying to listen to as many possible and listen enough times in context against or with one another, and to then rank a finite number? Limiting the number to ten is purely ludicrous from my viewpoint and completely unnecessary. The reader if looking for a top ten is free to disregard anything after fifteen. I am counting to twenty-five because it just feels right.
1. Nokturnal Mortum – The Voice of Steel – technically ’09 as released the last week of year in Europe. I considered it a ’10 release for last year’s list being as late as it was, and thus this year as well. I think this is their best yet. It’s truly amazing and the shit they pull off with this one. It’s like nothing I’ve heard done in the genre before. I don’t think anyone else could do it. A true milestone, not only in their careers but across the spectrum. They may have established themselves across a decade and a half, but with tVoS they fucking slay the competition here and now.
2. Anathema – We’re here because we’re here – seven years in the making and well worth the wait. It’s a very emotive, complete and profound release. Also the incredible production really is worth noting. A+ all around for such a unique and expertly recorded release.
3. Odroerir (German for the Islandic 'Óðrerir', vessel for the mead of Wisdom and Poetry in old Nordic mythology) - Goetterlieder II – a shame this release is really under just about everybody’s radar. It has a little bit of everything in a folk Metal release other than abundant BM/DM extremities and is one of my favorite FM releases in years. To me this is a true no-bullshit celebration of heritage, nature, and existence through Music.
4. Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits – a perfect album from Slough Feg. I love everything about it. Truly, this is a modern masterpiece of traditional Metal if I have ever heard one. They are at the top of their game and perhaps the best American band going right now in my opinion.
5. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit – mesmerizing. Still absorbing it really. It has met expectations although it has peculiarities about it that strike me as cause for thought, which is good. Overall I like that it takes some chances and yet balances so very well.
6. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier – if ever a Maiden album took awhile to grow on me this is it. Once it started to sink in I found a solid, attentive, and worthy effort and one that is memorable and brings me much happiness with each listen.
7. SigArTyr – Godsaga – this is a release that wears its influences like badges of honor, and does them magnificently with justice and reverence. Epic is a word I don’t use opften but applies here. Inspiring and triumphant!
8. Melechesh - The Epigenesis – a near perfect melding of extreme Metal and Middle Eastern authentic sounds as I interpret them. Really interesting and absorbing, and not easy to do but they do it so well.
9. Watain - Lawless Darkness – one of but a few Black Metal releases I really enjoy listening to this year. At the top of them all, and the top of their game IMO
10. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones – really surprised I like this album as much as I do. It’s as ugly as anything released in memory: vengeful, angry, and sinister. Not usually my bag surface wise, but this is an exception as it feels truly of opposition.
11. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time – just another fantastic piece of work from the masters of this genre. I don’t think anyone does it better in the game concerning Power Metal.
12. Weapon - From the Devils Tomb – surprising release. As near a perfect mesh of Black and Death Metal as I can think of, with the occasional eccentricities outside of the box thrown in liberally to spice it up just enough.
13. Ludicra - The Tenant – the first Ludicra album to really do it for me. It’s a solid, dark, brilliant little gem of a release with a lot to offer and discover with each listen.
14. Alcest - Écailles De Lune – lots to love about this release, the way it builds and has all these facets. Lots not to like about it such as it’s short and the latter songs just kind of go along aimlessly (though intended to I think) and drift off. Compared to how good it starts it comes off a bit too uneven for me.
15. Diamond Eyed Princess – Korlguelaal – the latest entry of my list. Something about it appeals to me but I can’t really say what it is. It’s not innovative or really unique in any way, just has a certain charm to it I can’t put my finger on that appeals to me.
16. Aiumeen Basoa - Iraganeko Bide Malkartsutik 17. Dawnbringer – Nucleus 18. King of Asgard - Fi'mbulvintr 19. Bifröst – Heidenmetal 20. Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth 21. Drudkh - Handful of Stars 22. Wuthering Heights – Salt 23. Heidevolk - Uit Oude Grond 24. Borknagar – Universal 25. Winterfylleth - The Mercian Sphere
5. Forgiveness Rock Record by Broken Social Scene 4. How to Destroy Angels' EP 3. Plastic Beach by Gorillaz 2. Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by My Chemical Romance 1. The Social Network score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Looking back through my stuff, I realized there were a few more that I spent a pretty good amount of time listening to:
Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis Alcest - Ecailles De Lune Burzum - Belus Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
And there were a few that I got, but was a tad disappointed in:
The National - High Violet - Boxer was great, catchy but depressing. Perfect cold weather record. The new one feels more meandering and after listening to it a few times, I realized I couldn't really remember anything about it. Against Me! - White Crosses - I held out against the fairweather fans and stuck by them through the new record deal and New Wave, but this one was pretty meh. A few good songs, but mostly limp. The Creepshow - They All Fall Down - I'm giving this one a bit more time to grab me, but so far nothing on this has charged out of the gate like their last album did.
John Foxx - Metatronic; John Foxx (& Louis Gordon) never fail.
Forest Swords - Dagger Paths/Rattling Cage ("... embracing scenic dubbed-out tapestries described by the label as a cross between Burial's sample-strewn claustrophobia and Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western scores...")
@joe.distort: I can't believe I forgot Ceremony. That album is brilliant. Have you heard Unfun's Sick Outside View? They're one of those bands that seem to be cropping up a lot lately that sound like they were trying to make a hardcore album and got it wrong slightly and ended up playing really noisy punk rock.
Also, a new Vacation Bible School album drops today so I'm looking forward to that and I haven't managed to get my hands on Guitar Wolf's latest yet so there's a good chance they'll round out my list.
Here is a list of some albums that were my favourites this year (in no particular order)
APPARAT ORGAN QUARTET - Pólýfónía MOMENTUM - Fixation, at Rest DEMDIKE STARE - Voices Of Dust PYE CORNER AUDIO TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES - Black Mill Tapes Vol.1 CHELSEA WOLFE - ??????????
