I just gotta say, if this isn't one of the most beautiful and well put together compilations of atmospheric, diverse, tranquil and fantastic neo-folk recordings ever then I don't know what is. It's just simply, wonderful. And deserves mention in the best of 2010!
@Ryan Burton That song was the best thing about true blood, but I didn't know who the performer was. I'll have to check out the album later.Thanks.
Stream: Bangs and Works Vol. 1, A Chicago Footwork Compilation. The dance sound of the decade. It's nice to have a good mix in one place and lots of great tracks I've never heard before. Or as they say a "Document". It stinks that the most ripped off aspect of the sound is the skittering beats. There is so much more going on. You can hear It's Gonna Rain, Oval, Miami Bass, Illbient(haha, what) and more. The polyrhythms! Or the omnivorous, non-ironic sampling. The aggressive sampling as a tool to reclaim the audio we are bombarded with goes way beyond the mashup. It's all very exciting conceptually. Most importantly I can crank it up and dance like Ian Curtis.
Mark Fell - Multistability most psychedelic listening experience. His UL8 album had a better last 1/3rd though.
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh. There were just so many good opportunities to play to this.
Individual tracks: Crystal Castles - I am made of chalk. I kept coming back to this song. Whenever I listened to it I felt regret for all the stupid things I've done. Pretty cool. The rest of the album did nothing for me. K'naan - Wavin' Flag. Uhh, wait, did this get released this year? Well, I heard it this year and it makes me feel great and brain damaged, so I hope it did.
Just listened to My Chemical Romance - Na Na Na, nice. I'm gonna search the thread now specifically for more metal and generally for awesomeness. I couldn't find the time to keep up this year or even really know where to look anymore. Playing two Deathspell Omega tracks at once sounds great right now.
