Set up my Diaspora account (raven), and have been mildly annoyed that it apparently won't allow me to do line-breaks, and instead goes straight to "let us post this entry RIGHT NOW, Roo!" mode. I can get to the site on iOS pretty easily and make basic posts, but comments don't seem to work on iOS safari. I still have 2 invites left, anyhow.

What have I been posting about? Mostly Crocheting. And Design Hell. And Crocheting. You see, I've been able to crochet a chain for a long while, but doing anything beyond that's been rather brain numbingly not-working. I tried the stitch & bitch crochet book, and found it's basic instructions to be made of gibberish, with diagrams equally gibberishable. Followed that up with the crochet answer book, and found out that lo and behold: I can make the world's smallest potholder. Better diagrams, and a lot of swearing seem to help in this!

Now it's onto making a real sized potholder! But first a break, because I feel like my fingers are going to cramp up, and I need to stop swearing at the yarn.

 So, how is Diaspora?
Is it usable?
Can you post a link so that we can see what it looks like?

I am deeply skeptical of this endeavor.

Diaspora's been a bit unstable as of right now. The pod I'm on is at Diasp.org
You can post and reply to posts, and post images, however I haven't figured out linebreaks (though underscores fork for italics). I've found it seems to be most stable (from my perspective) really late at night/early in the morning. People have been having issues with adding contacts. It feels really raw, and I can deal with it; I'm just curious to see what they do NEXT.

On the crocheting side of things, I am getting better. Slowly. My potholder looks somewhat lame.

 "Next" is their problem.

The word "diaspora" literally means "exodus". So, that is a great way to conjure the idea of everyone leaving Facebook en masse... but then what?
What do they do once they succeed and everyone leaves?

Myspace didn't call itself "Better than Friendster", and Facebook didn't call itself "Leave Myspace"

It has to be its own thing on its own. As it is, I am only seeing what it is not.

It reminds me of John Kerry running on the "I Am Not George Bush" platform.

Or all the aspiring writers who describe their comics as "You know how Batman never kills the bad guys, well my character DOES!"

Simply, if you define your thing only as a reaction to another thing, you will never be able to stand on your own.
What does Diaspora do if it succeeds?

I wish this didn't frustrate me so much.

Are they intentionally withholding information to make it seem mysterious?

For example, am I supposed to just know what a "pod" is? Am I stupid or are they being secretive?

I feel like Homer Simpson... "What the heck is that.... I WANT IT!"

OK, i REALLY don't get this thing at all.

I just set up my account. joshdahl@diasp.org
And all it seems to be is a wall onto which I can post my own words.
But I can pick who gets to see those words... by sending them an invite which they can then choose to accept.

If I want to send messages to people I already know.....people whose emails I already have... why just email them what I want to tell them? Why involve the complication of making them accept my invitation?

What am I missing here?

Thank you for bearing with me as i struggle to understand this....

On Facebook, people can see my interests and who/what i am. I have a facebook set up just for my writing. If someone were looking for a comic book writer on facebook, they could possibly come across me and read about me. They could see links to my work and all that.

To find people on Diaspora, I have been reduced to searching for common names and hoping to get lucky. I have even copy/pasted the exact names that folks have posted in this thread and still had no results.

Is there any way to connect to people on a non-invite basis? For example, I am curious about what this crochet stuff is all about... but I'll be damned if I can find it.
