I started playing WoW again after three years away. The new races and the relaxation of leveling requirements really appealed to me (chickeywriter@gmail.com is my Real ID, should anybody feel inclined; my main is Hordeside on Maelstrom).

I also picked up Borderlands, but haven't popped it in yet.

I will not cave in and go back to Warcraft. I'm clean, and I've been clean for years!

Mainly playing Fallout New Vegas still at the moment. There's an awful lot to do in that game if you wander about a bit and talk to people. Everyone seems to want you to do something for them, there's a lot more going on than in Fallout 3. That does mean it feels a lot less focused though, there's a story there but it doesn't seem to have the same drive that Fallout 3's did. I think they got the balance between a core story with lots of side things to do best with Oblivion.

Still playing Super Street Fighter 4, still buying the DLC costumes for it even though I know they're pointless, because the joy of beating someone whilst playing with a ganguro'ed up version of Sakura or Juri is too amusing to pass up.

I have to thank Nintendo for broadening the market for gaming too, for the first time in ages I can buy videogames for *everyone* for Christmas this year. Makes a change to be buying rather than giving a list of games to the family that *I* want...

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood was rocking my socks off. At this point I'm just running through trying to finish-up all the side quests and what not. I may sit down and play back through Fable 3, probably as a bad guy this time. I flew through Black Ops and Medal of honor though; both pretty good games, but way too short. I should have rented both. Otherwise, I'm still comfortably addicted to Minecraft.

so, playing a ton of CRACKDOWN. i have never been a fan of sandbox games, for a wide variety of reasons i dont even care to list. THIS one however, is awesome. i have fun with the super leaping and just explore the city looking for hidden objects. then when i get bored i got lay waste to a bunch of henchman, find their leader, throw him off a very tall building and smile.

i have BIONIC COMMANDO to start, probably this weekend, as well.

I got tired of scratching the sores on the inside of my arm and decided to drop coin on a new PC build this week. I'll be loading Team Fortress 2 on it again, hoping to get a pass to the beta update. Red Orchestra 2 looks really good and with up to 64 people in multiplayer, I'm very hopeful it rocks...

^Thought this thread was all about WOW, which I don't play because all my friends are dead, in prison, or dead, I'm too cheap to pay a monthly subscription, everybody else is doing it etc etc etc On further thought, been playing Limbo, Plants Vs Zombies, FF Tactics remake for PSP, Fallout New Vegas and black Ops on rare occasion. Think I am finally done with Fable III, or not...I can't decide.

Been jonezing to replay Uncharted 2 for some reason. The U3 screenshots maybe?

Not been gaming much, then bought Champions online. It's very entertaining to a degree, but quickly becomes tiresome due to some bad design. Playing left 4 Dead 2 again, after I realised that they'd included the chapter where Bill gets it. I was sad. Bill is one of the most charming characters I've ever played in an FPS. A miserable old bastard with a gun. I can get behind that.

Yeah, I've been back playing WoW upon my good lady's insistence for the last few months after my XBox finally died. Though am slightly pissed off that all my epic gear became instant junk with the new expansion, I've got to admit, we've had great fun, I'm surprised how small my ignore list is these days but possibly because I don't play until it's quite late when all the annoying attention seeking little pricks are in bed.

I finally got the DS TWO that I was talking about, so now DS games are open to me and I've been addicted to Mario Kart, Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4, Yoshi's Island and Space Invaders.

Sadly, the Xbox hasn't seen much action. But damn, I DO miss Dragon Age: Origins...

I haven't played WoW in a serious way, but I've played enough on my girlfriend's account to get hooked. I already know she's gotten me the complete WoW, up to and including Cataclysm (sorry--Catackalysm) for Christmas, so I'll be immersed in it soon. She's a level 80 mage, so I'm sure she'll be glad to finally have me hooked.

Currently, though, I'm flipping back and forth between Silent Hill: Origins, Lego Batman and a replay of the first Kingdom Hearts.

As I did two years ago, and four years ago, I went to my local Gamestop and purchased the newest World of Warcraft expansion. (I explained, when offered a promotional deal, some kind of special card for the store, that I went to Gamestop once every two years. As I left, the cashier said "See you in two years!")

WoW-speak commence:
I've decided to go for a straight-through completionist run. I did every quest in Mount Hyjal, and am working on Vashj'ir. The consequence of doing this while also running dungeons with folks who I will, come January, be raiding with again is that I'm a couple zones behind where I could be. But then again, Blood Elves and Naga were always my favorite part of Warcraft 3.

All the raiding I did back over the summer apparently had an effect: None of the gear rewards in the two starter zones are actually a worthwhile upgrade. Really, I don't plan to concern myself with gear until I hit max level again, at which point it may just be a matter of crafting myself some (Go go blacksmithing).

Non-WoW stuff:
I bought myself a trio of zombie games a while back: STALKER: Call of Pripyat, Plants vs. Zombies, and Left 4 Dead 2. Call of Pripyat is good. The series is back on track after the mild abomination which was Clear Sky. PvZ is loads of fun, but I did nearly everything I could do within the first few days of ownership and have been too busy to re-examine it and find more stuff. L4D2 ... fun, but I think I'm not in the mood for it currently.

Since I'm no longer busy, I shall be returning (in between sessions of WoW) to my replay of Deus Ex. I decided that it had been far, far too long since I just played DX itself, start to finish, no mods, cheats, whathaveyous. I also decided to try out a different playstyle than I normally use (which I dubbed "Kill all the motherfuckers" and which consists of running up to people and shooting them in the face) and avoid doing things in my set "This is the numerically best" pattern. For those who know the game, I've just arrived in Paris.

So... are you going for a pacifist victory? I tried to beat the game with tasers and darts once, but killed someone by mistake rather soon -I think I chose the wrong kind of darts or something.

I've been mainly spending time in Kongregate and trying some bigger but still free indie games, both because my main computer has died and I'm limited to 1GB RAM and because of my disappointment with most big commercial games I've tried lately. Probably won't play a new big game until Witcher 2 is out, although maybe I'm overlooking something (might give New Vegas a try, although I hated Fallout 3 because it was so empty and dialog was so HORRIFYING, is NV any better about this?)

I'm probably about halfway through. Still haven't recovered that damn platinum chip, but at least I know where it is. Recently upgraded to an assault carbine - it sure is sweet to be able to mow down deathclaws at a safe distance.

World of Warcraft: Returning to the game after 9 months. Goblins: best starting zone. A whimsical version of Warhammer Gobbo culture with a Wind Waker Zelda soundtrack. And somehow, they make the zone feel like Grand Theft Auto and the Sims at times.

Starcraft 2: Just starting to play against others and finding it fun and challenging.

Gamestop is clearing out an action RPG from Square-Enix called Nier, and at $15 there's no way I could resist. Turns out it's a lot of fun. Not brilliant but quite solid, and you can hit shadow creatures with swords, so I'm having a good time with it. It's also got bullet-hell bosses for some reason, which also makes me happy.

Speaking of bullet hell, this came out yesterday on Xbox Live Indie Games, and it's $1-

It moves a lot smoother than the Youtube video suggests, by the way. I do like eye-melting bullet patterns, oh yes!

Sorry, I should've been more clear. My current strategy, different from what I normally use, is "Run up and shoot them in the face." Usually, I strongly favor non-lethal methods out of practicality and a knowledge that NPC reactions (Paul, Carter) will be better or at least focus on a long-range approach (sniper rifle) because it allows for an easy tactical retreat. The change in tactic necessitates a change in attitude, which changes the game ever so slightly, and makes something I've played so many times seem different enough to be intriguing again.

re: WoW stuff. Anybody on Silvermoon-Horde or Shadow Council-Alliance?

Took a bit of a break to replay Borderlands and go through Mass Effect 2 (there's a weekend my neck won't forgive me for) but now I'm back on the ladder. Handily it seems aware of the amount of time I took off, since it was still matching me with opponents that my rusty skills could handle.

Although finals/broke are hindering my gaming somewhat....

Finally picked up Batman: Arkham Asylum, since I was waiting for a price drop on the used copies. Fucking fantastic, is what it was, with favorite bits being the Scarecrow bits, which I'm sure everyone says but I think really added something to the gaming-as-interactive-storytelling argument, and, oddly, the Riddler trophy/puzzle hunt. Sign that its an awesome game: I've completed 100% of the content, including the challenges, and I'm not sick of it.

Vaguely tooling around in GTA4, since a friend lent it to me, but its really not capturing my imagination. Probably has something to do with the horrendous driving physics, the outlandishly over-the-top characters combined with creepy-valley syndrome, and the general lack of feeling that this is going anywhere. That the impression five hours in, anyway.

Having far more fun with all of the releases from radiangames, available on XBLA-Indie Games (listed together under "R"). There's a couple of twin-stick shooters, a Space-Invaders-with-twist, stuff like that. Quite fun, and at $1 a piece, well worth the price tag.

Hoping to pick up a copy of Vanquish next week. Rented it when it first came out, played the shit out of it, but want a copy of my own to mess about in, which speaks well to its entertainment value. I believe I mentioned it in the previous gaming thread, but it basically plays like Gears of War meets Japan, complete with giant robots. Good fun.

Upcoming gaming: Waiting to pick up FO:NV. Finals are now, and it would eat my life. Correction: WILL eat my life. So, after finals. AS:Brotherhood is a possible rental, but AS2 really didn't do it for me the way the first one did, so I definitely won't be buying it off the hop.

Also, looking for a decent turn-based tactical game, like FF Tactics or Advance Wars. I've played the Disgaea series and Fire Emblem, both of which were fun. Suggestions?

Congratulations, you've just saved yourself an additional 35 hours of wondering "Why isn't this any fun?"

For some crazy-fun open world shenanigans, I can easily recommend Just Cause 2. The story is almost nonexistent but it's just ridiculously fun to mess with everything in your path, and it's amazingly pretty to boot.

Me and my iPod with Touches. Two weeks ago played through Sally's Spa and got promoted to BEST FRIEND FOREVER, that game is great.

This weekend sprung for Infinity Blade which is fun. Along with Galaxy on Fire these are both iOS rule-breakers in that they look spectacular but are built primarily upon solid tactile pleasure in handling, which is the most important thing. But in the end Infinity Blade is not as expansive and rich as GoF. GoF is fantastic, I got so intensely into the side-quest that by the time I realized most of the bad guys are just other system's goodguys I was a bit disturbed at all the murdering I had accidentally done. Also when I got the main best ship it is so pretty I just strolled around with a convoy for ten minutes.

I completed New Vegas a few days ago. Very disappointing ending. My friends said it was ridiculously epic and I thought it sucked. New Vegas was great but still left a bitter taste in my mouth. The map size was so much smaller in comparison to 3, which was quite a letdown, and it didn't actually seem like there were that many quests.

Been playing Dead Space for the past few weeks. The mechanics are rather repetitive, but immensely effective and atmospheric. It's probably the creepiest, most unsettling game I've played in years.

I've also ordered Final Fantasy XIII. I'm not much of a traditional RPG fiend, but I keep hearing good things about it. Should be arriving on Wednesday or thereabouts. We'll see how it turns out.

And I'm planning on getting Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood come Christmas, probably while I'm traveling for the holidays. The second one was extremely fun, so I have some real high expectations for this one.

I just cancelled my WoW subscription. I didn't like the pre-cataclysm class changes so I found I was playing less and less, I don't really have the time for it, and I've got a baby arriving next month so I'll have even less time then. Hopefully I've learnt my lesson and kicked my MMORPG habit (I still miss my Everquest character though).

I'm going back and forth between Elder Scrolls IV and Neverwinter Nights. I've had my copy of Elder Scrolls IV virtually sitting untouched since I bought it last year. Finally started playing a few days ago. Just in time to fall in love with it, and get excited by the Elder Scrolls V trailer.

Mass Effect 3, Elder Scrolls V, and Arkham City all due around Winter 2011? As if I needed any more reasons to be a homebody during the Winter with all the snow we get in upstate NY.

Just got Rock Band 3 (using a trade-in of AC: Brotherhood; it was the fella's game and he just wasn't impressed. Especially since the multiplayer looked like a hot mess from what I watched him play), and I've not gotten very far, but damn. It's prettier than the last one, for sure.
Still keep forgetting to play New Vegas, which is disappointing. That first play-through of Fallout 3... you couldn't tear me away from that controller. I don't know, I like the game, it's fun... maybe I'm a sucker for really emotionally engaging games.
And on XBLA, there's a free game, put out by Doritos, of all people, that doesn't look too bad. It's called Crash Course. It's just a stripped-down platforming game, using avatars. Reminds me of those Japanese game shows that have people falling off foam towers into water. Still looks fun. Especially for a free game.

I'm still trying to finish up Red Dead Redemption. Other then that it's mostly Smash Bros with friends or some old PS2 game me and my brother were obsessed with back in the day.

Just finished New Vegas the other day, one of the endings at least. I'll go back for the others at some stage.

Now that's over I"m working my way through a couple of other titles I hadn't finished - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (pretty but rather disappointing) and the last few levels of Mario Galaxy 2. Then I might give Epic Mickey a spin. I've been in a platformer mood lately.

I should finish RDR and Borderlands at some point but I lost enthusiasm for both of them pretty quickly.

Ooh, Rock Band 3. I know it's got a single-player mode, but for the life of me can't figure out why. Me, my girlfriend, and assorted family break it out not quite every time there's two or more of us in the same room, but close. Dumped the licensing fees on RB1 and 2 songs, picked up a handful more thanks to DLC, and am horribly tempted by a few others I really shouldn't spend the money on.

I'm hoping for the keyboard for Christmas. :)

Rock Band is slowly moving away from a DDR-style party game to a band simulator, and I'm finally joining the ranks of people saying "Why don't you just learn a real instrument?" I mean, you're literally playing keyboards at a certain point in difficulty, and they're making a fully-functional MIDI guitar for advanced modes as well. So why not just start a band with your friends that you play Rock Band with? I'm sure you could figure out a way to make practicing as interesting as playing Rock Band.

Personally, I've been playing even more WoW. I decided to try for Realm First, which I've never done and wanted to try. Three people in my guild got firsts for their respective classes, but I missed mine by a few hours. I still hit 85 in the first 36 hours after release (because I needed sleep in there), and then pretty much crashed. I have no idea how the people that made it to 70 and 80 firsts for the last two releases did it. By the end of it, my eyes felt like they were made of fiery sandpaper, and that was after less than a day and a half.

That said, it was certainly an experience. I play on a PvP server, so Hyjal was an absolute slaughter, but once I got out of there, no one even touched me. Even when I was outnumbered like 12 to 1. I didn't run into many bugs, and I *really* like some of the new zones (especially Deepholm). My guild downed the new Tol Barad raid boss, and we're scheduled to start raiding tonight. Hopefully I'll go, but I'm a little behind on the gear curve as compared to my guildies. Perhaps they will take pity on me.

I started Final Fantasy II on SNES a few weeks ago and have about four or five hours logged on that. I have a feeling we might be getting a few 360 games for Christmas (probably stuff like Bioshock and Arkham Asylum, which we still haven't played), so between those and WoW I should be set on games for a while.

Oh, I just remembered we got Starcraft II trials with Cataclysm, so maybe I'll give that a shot. I played in the beta a bit, but all they had was multiplayer, which I'm not at all interested in with Starcraft. Besides, I still need to finish the first one.

ETA: Don't tell anyone in power: I named my worgen druid... Worgenellis. I fully expect eeling, but goddammit I find it hilarious. I haven't actually logged in with him yet, but I expect *someone* will appreciate it. Especially in the sea of horrible Twilight references.

Fallout: New Vegas is fun if infuriating given all the bugs, the aimlessness of some of the quest follow-ups; by which I mean you can lock yourself out of later quests or quest options by something that is totally unrelated - you can totally screw yourself over without even knowing it or being prepared for it (like don't kill Tabitha, don't use The King's favor until the NCR quest and so forth; and I'm sort of annoyed that the Hardcore mode apparently only grants you an achievement or something and not an in-game perk, which is what they imply in the beginning. Otherwise it's fun. I like the "subtler" stuff with the interrelational stuff between characters or like the character of Cook-Cook being fleshed out by somewhat unrelated characters, even if "rapist" isn't that interesting a character trait.

The rate at which some folks on my server were getting server firsts were disturbing. I logged in about an hour and a half after it went live and there was already a bunch of level 85 death knight worgen tooling around, and server first announcements kept coming up while my character was trying to make it back from Northrend (both my good lady and I hit 80 the night before) so kudos to your guild mates and Wogenellis made me laugh, at least.

I've been really enjoying the multiplayer in the new assassin's creed these past few days. It takes a little time to get into it, because it's really a game about trying to fool the other players into killing the wrong target than it is a combat game. You can get some severe paranoia going when playing with people at the higher ranks that have more of the toys unlocked.

That's excellent and depressing. I really need to clear some solid gaming time and work through Uncharted II and Batman: Arkham Asylum at least. I really loved Fallout 3 but damn was that game a time sink. I tend to get lost in those kinda open world games just roaming the desert killing things. I remember in the first Fallout I traveled all over the map before really starting the story grabbing a few bobbleheads and some accessible and powerful weapons. Then I went into Megaton and killed and ate every man and women in the town before blowing it to hell. Good times.

Currently playing Mass Effect. I got dragged away from New Vegas by Mass Effect 2 and then after one playthrough I wanted to do a second playthrough, but felt like I should start from the start of ME1 to carry over all my decisions etcetera. Both are brilliant games.

@Audley - The 85 worgen shouldn't scare you too much--they let people do paid race changes right away. I don't think I've seen a worgen that was started fresh hit 85 yet. That's a lot of content to burn through, even with the changes to the old world and the reduced XP in Northrend.

Profession firsts, though, that's disturbing. Fishing and cooking both went up in the first hour or so, and skinning and mining weren't too far behind. I was just amazed. And, yes, a little frightened.

Just finished Batman: Arkham Asylym.

Good, not great....I was expecting more in terms of the script (the final confrontation with Joker is shit). Some parts of the gameplay don't fit really well with the batman universe (all the riddler stuff for instance). But in general it was a fun game with nice graphics.

It was good enough to get me from the super meat boy craze..

Been playing a lot of strategy games. Empire Total War is surprisingly through and detailed. However, I do prefer Warhammer much more, especially for the dark humor. But, when I need a break from thinking too much, Killing Floor reminds me that games can be simple, fun and violently beautiful.

@Will Blood Omen is a PS3 system seller for me, or would be if I had the dinero for one. The entire Legacy of Kain series* is Happy Place Gaming for me, and it really shits that it ended on a cliffhanger.

I'd love to see them finish the series as either a small, downloadable game, like the Tomb Raider XBLA/PSN game they did, or at least a CG movie. My ultimate fantasy is a full reboot, since you can only fix the fuckery done by time travel with more time travel.

But, alas and alack, I doubt we'll ever see it.

I bought minecraft a few weeks ago and have been playing it on and off. I'm finding it terrifying and confusing. I like it.

At night when the monsters come out I'll throw a shack up around me and dig deep down into the earth laying torches til the sun comes up, slowly connecting everything into one mega structure. I think I need a non-euclidian geometry mod for the city I'm trying to build.

I've had quite a few hilarious drowning deaths and one good lava death. My favorite death was probably the first day when I tried to see if I could walk on clouds. Too much mario I guess. Dying in stupid ways has probably been my favorite part of the game.

I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of good item combos. I also forget how to make things if I take a break for too long. I can't decide if I should look at spoilers or just battle it out. Advice?

And yeah after playing minecraft I'm more baffled than ever by the super crazy complex structures I've seen. Am I missing out on a fast way to build or are they just throwing a scary amount of time into the game?

There is no fast way to build in Minecraft, outside of some external programs. Patience, a good plan, and maybe a nice multiplayer server not populated by people more interested in breaking things than creating is the key. Still, you can get a lot done in a little time with good organization.

I would recommend hitting up the Minecraft Wiki for crafting goodies. It's a game about exploration and discovery, but it's hard to discover much of anything without good tools.

Everybody I know uses the Minecraft Wiki as a reference for item construction. There's so many item combos it's difficult to remember all of them, so a lot of people use this as a good guide for crafting. For instance, this is where I learned about the Compass and the Watch, probably my two favorite "tools" in the game. One keeps you from getting lost, and the other makes you a lot more efficient. You can stay underground during the day, and come up exactly when dawn arrives to farm, chop down trees, and to build.

I haven't bought much of anything this year. I learned my lesson with last year's Steam sale, and have a nice pile of great stuff I've played maybe 5 minutes of. I've bought one game so far, and it wasn't even a deal of the day.

By the way, I mentioned a game called Score Rush a few pages back and will bring it up again. It's the best twin-stick shooter since Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, and I've been playing it on and off since it came out 12/09. Here's a multiplayer video-

Just an amazingly fun game to drop 5-15 minutes into. The controls feel utterly perfect, the action is insane but also instantly understandable, so the reason for dying is only rarely a mystery. It doesn't take long to amass a serious load of firepower, and the enemies aren't shy at all about throwing it back. The difficulty curve is perfect, and the entire from first enemy to last boss is quick enough that it's far too easy to give it one more round. Assuming you can get to the last boss, of course, which I've done a total of twice so far. I know I can beat that bastard, with just a little more practice...

Played some Super Streetfighter IV this mornng (Christms gift) and I used to be the shit at it as SSFII on the SNES way back when. Just relearning the controls let alone the special moves is a challenge now. Also playing Donkey Kong Country Returns (another Christmas gift) and Forza 2 Ive had for ages and am enjoying now. Had it forever as included with Marvel Alliance but never played til today. I like the arrow path!

I've had SSFIV turbo for a while now even have a filed down D pad for it and even won a few online matches but man, there are some real maniacs out there that stuff you before you even get a chance to move. Good fun. As for Bayonetta, I really like the complex combos you can pull off without having to have the thirteen super-liminal thumbs necessary to even be half assed at SSFIV.

My good lady bought Forza 2, played it twice and allowed it to gather dust. I should get into it, but I never got back into racing games after GT3 broke me.

I got Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 because I liked the anime okay and I thought the graphics looked like you were playing a cartoon which was fun--and I enjoy the character designs from the series--long story short--the game is very very fun. The fights are really eye popping, and the game does a great job of bringing the series to the gaming platform.

I also got Heavy Rain because you can never have enough QTE. I thought it was really engaging, though it's the kind of game you see and you're like "this has more potential than I'm getting". Like I think I want to play a Three Days of the Condor/Rubicon type game like this. The origami killer isn't thaaat interesting to me. But all in all a lot of fun, and something my partner can follow along with while I play.

Also we got a dart board if that counts as gaming. That's a lot of fun. The sensation of throwing sharp pointing things into circular board thingies is rather pleasant. Even if I'm pretty sure in the end someone is going to lose an eye.

If you're playing street fighter 4 online, don't use 'quick match'. Go for 'custom match' and set it to 'same skill'. You'll have a lot more fun as it'll stop pairing you against all the stupidly good players.

I think I spent about $50 on Steam games... Yeah, it was my first Christmas sale, I went a little nuts.

So far, playing Burnout Paradise and Mass Effect. Paradise is my new favorite racing game... EVER, more or less. As far as I know, the open-world setup has never been used for racing games before, and I just didn't really get much out of them. For once I'm actually bothering to learn the techniques and how not to crash into walls, because I keep seeing the same curve in a bunch of different races.

Mass Effect is the one I had my fingers crossed for all this month. I 'borrowed' it and then managed to break the install trying to 'borrow' DLC, but until then it was one of my favorite games. Now that I actually own a copy, playing it daily. Moreso than the sequel, it's just incredibly immersive. Everything that they removed from the second one turned out to take away from the immersion, like the driving levels, elevator loading screens, etc. It actually felt like moving through a larger world, whereas ME2 feels like fighting your way through a discrete level with no path choices, then load screen, then you're in another level. There's no connection between any of the places.

However, the second one has better characters and better combat. Fingers crossed for ME3.

@ m3t4lfi3nd - Most of the SF hardcore use a joystick. Though there are several top players prominent in the tournament scene known for being pad players. There's also a good bit of peer pressure to use stick, but how useful it is also depends on the style of the character being used. Some it's important, while others have relatively simple enough movements it's not really important.

Got Black Ops from my wife, Brotherhood from my mother-in-law. Some marry into money, I married into games.

Also fell for the Christmas sales. I guess I went a bit overboard, really. Got Enslaved, Majin and Deadly Premonition coming in the mail, all earmarked for playing with my wife, along with our co-op fun in Scott Pilgrim.

I lie awake at night aware that no one can save me from the vastness of New Vegas, so after 40 hours gametime I've decided to explore the rest of it in several smaller gulps than the current 5-6 hour sessions so that I can actually have time for my new games.

@Suresh - The pad players don't use the 360 or PS3 controllers. They use things like this. That being said, having a controller for SFIV isn't as bad as it is for games like Blazblue, as most of the inputs are fairly simplified. It also takes a long time to get used to using a stick, and the good ones are expensive. That being said, a fighting game is extremely pointless unless playing against living opponents, as even on the hardest difficulty the AI have some very simple exploits (for example, nothing but lariat) you can use to win.

@DJ Stawes - I'm aware of the type of pad used for fighting games. I have 3 sticks, and one has a permanent spot next to my TV. I mainly play on the 360 and don't own a PS3, but since most tourneys use PS3 I bought a PS3 TE just to lug around to tourneys. I know sticks can be dual modded, but I don't have the technical know-how to do so nor do I have friends that could do it for me. SF IV was the impetus for me to finally buy a current gen console. I grew up playing in arcades, and once I decided to buy a 360 a stick was a no brainer. Pads don't feel comfortable for me when I play fighting games.

@ Alastair - I use Rose 99% of the time. I thought when Super dropped that I'd go back to Adon. He's what I used in the SF Alpha series, but I didn't like how he felt. Now and again I still dabble with him. Though once Marvel v Capcom 3 comes out? HAH! Back to the VS series I go. So many characters I'm dying to get my hands on: MODOK, Super Skrull, Thor, Dormammu. Plus my old standbys from the older VS games, Hulk and Cap. If the rumors are true and Taskmaster is in it I'd love to see how he plays.

For the holidays my fighting games are gathering dust for now. My gf's parents bought me Assassin's Creed 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. My brother bought me Neverwinter Nights 2. Picked up NWN1 a few weeks back, and haven't had a chance to finish it. Plus Elder Scrolls IV has been sucking up my time. So many games I keep skipping back and forth between, but it's been great fun.

I love it when someone ragequits. That someone can get so pissed off that they have to pull the plug, and send hatemail? It leaves me laughing. Especially when they do it riiiight as you're landing the final hit. It amazes me how fast some people can drop a game when that happens. Though I'm seeing it happen a lot less in Super than I did in vanilla SF IV.

@fauxhammer - Goddamn but I loved the Blood Omen series. I would give my firstborn child to see that fucking series revamped and rebooted. The past 6 months before I got my new Xbox I've been playing ps2 titles and I picked up LOK:Defiance for like $5 just last month and played through it right before Xmas. God I loved the characters in that series so much, especially Kain. I miss Kain.

Playing Fallout:NV since I received it and a new Xbox from my wife for Xmas.

I fucking love Fallout. I mean, I love anything set post Apoocalyptia, but I have been a Fallout fanboy since One.
Last night, I achieved some kind of gaming Nirvana, and had an an epiphany in the bargain. Maybe some of you can relate.
For the last few years, whenever I played a really BIG game especially, such as Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc, I would ALWAYS go buy the strategy guide. I always reasoned that I didn't want to miss out on anything important, didn't want to end up with a less than optimal character build, blah blah blah.
Well, this time I didn't do it. I started New Vegas cold, no guidance, just started PLAYED THE FUCKING GAME.
Anyway, last night I had the best 2 hours of gaming I've had in years. I am thoroughly enjoying every aspect of this game. The dialouge feels fresher and snappier than FO3. The action feels more dynamic. Since I skipped the stupid strat guide, I was totally not expecting it when an invisible, 10 foot tall mutant materialized a few yards away and attempted to take my head off with a piece of re-bared concrete. As I unloaded a clip of 10mm hollow point into his face I felt a sense of childlike bliss in gaming I can't remember feeling in fucking years. Like maybe since I WAS a child.
I realized that Strategy Guides have diminished my gaming experiences for a LONG time, and I have sworn to never purchase another one ever again. In fact, I'm going to think twice about using online information resources unless I'm seriously stuck. I don't care anymore If I miss out on anything. I never realized how stratified and over-analytical my gaming experiences had become until now, and how much I was losing.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

CDoring: Definetly, although with different games. I used to be heavily into adventure games in the 90s, like Lucasarts and so on, nearly always ruining them with walkthroughs at the first sign of getting stuck. Dumb me.

On a side note, I think the completist need to explore every part and see every possible outcome in a game also diminishes the experience, not only when using strategy guides but also relating to the whole save/reload-thing. If you see everything, it's like experiencing nothing. This interview with the guy who did "One Chance" (play it before reading the interview if you haven't tried it yet, only takes a few minutes) explores that pretty nicely, I think.

Steam sale is great. Video game programmers have it worse than musicians! I've budgeted $20 and still have 10 left. I know I'll never finish an rpg again so that's making life pretty easy.

I've been playing Everyday Genius: SquareLogic the most. It's sorta like sudoku in mechanics and you can make up similar BS about it being good for your mind. It feels much more logical(sorry) than sudoku and most of the notational busy work is gone. My favorite part is that although it's rewarding once you get to the advanced puzzles it's not super cracky like say Tetris or Bejeweled/Puzzle Quest. More puzzles than I will ever finish, not sure if this is a plus or minus.

I finally got to try The Void, bundled in the Indie Fright Pack. If Minecraft is crashing in the wilderness The Void is going to an alien world that hates your guts. Good stuff.

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom is a short puzzley platformer. If you like the genre it is very much worth it at 50 cents.

Super meat boy, so far I'm not sure I believe the hype. Chances of finishing are low. Chances of sprained thumb are high.

@CDoring Yeah, I've found guides mostly ruin games for me. Online resources are worse because they are so quick and easy. I had to cut them out completely for adventure and puzzle games.

That distrust of guides is why I asked for advice earlier about the Minecraft wiki, but bizarrely it's the one game I'm enjoying a lot more since "cheating"! Thanks for the encouragement! It's an inelegant solution though and I wish there was an in-game option like a book that stores recipes you've made.

Playing Minecraft is the experience I always imagined (and was envious of) when my older friends talked about playing the hardcore DOS-era and earlier rpg/simulation games. Except I get to opt out of the activities that are equivalent to making maps on graph paper, ha!

@krushdbug Lucasarts had some bizarre puzzles. I remember Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was a pretty serious offender. I vaguely recall some ridiculous and spiteful nightmare with mayonnaise and totem poles. I played Day of the Tentacle with some friends sans walkthrough. We were stuck on some puzzles for weeks and got into serious arguments about using a hint guide, but we did it. The keys are in the door!

I played a bit of Deadly Premonitions at a friend's house. Shit. Now I want to buy an Xbox I can't afford. Normal gameplay mechanics aren't too hot, but the story and direction have me hooked. Real-time beard growth simulation and a stink meter have me intrigued too. The voice acting of the main character is a joy.

@mercurialblonde It's not really people you have to worry about, it's pets. I've known a few pirate cats and yeah, darts. :(

The thing to remember about Minecraft is that it's only just in beta. The tutorial with the crafting info is on the list of things to be added, which is why I had no problem recommending the Wiki crafting page. It's meant to be there, but not yet risen high enough on the list of things to be done to make an appearance yet.

Deadly Premonition is just awesome in every way except gameplay. Brilliant and insane, and an easy contender for Game of the Year.

Word is that the books (currently only used to build bookshelves that are just for decoration) will allow you to store crafting recipes, maps, data on monsters and equipment, inventories, etc. The thing I like about Notch and Minecraft is that the dev team are great about listening to the fans while still ultimately making the game they want. I love it!

It, and its (more expensive at the moment) sequel are comfortably the best games on the PS3, and in my opinion about as good as games get in the 'action adventure' space at the moment. I figured out my biggest problem with games - I hate learning new games, specifically new interfaces. If I've just gotten done playing a two-joystick game and then have to switch to one that uses the trigger to fire, it takes me ages to context-switch. I suspect this is a result of age. As a result though, I tend to buy games that are really different from each other - I'll only have one RPG, one FPS, one side-scroller etc, at a time. I also therefor prefer games with a high replay value, or serial sequels, or pure arcade.

Nevertheless I went on a small Xbox spree to try and fill out my long weekend. Picked up the latest Fable III expansion pack (time to give it another play-through as Evil), the first episode of Decay, Ikaruga, and currently pitting Groov vs. Geometry Wars - Evolution head to head. (I was a bit taken aback at how much easier the GW:Evo demo was than the original). The favorite so far, though, has been Worm2: Armageddon - not a new concept by any means, but I just love tank style turn based battle games. And it doesn't compete with anything else I have in terms of controls, so.

Looking forward to digging into Decay quite a lot if it has half the promise I think it does. The way Fable III has also been steadily releasing additional content makes me think a lot more about the possibilities of games as real platforms for long-term episodic storytelling. And looking forward to checking out more of the Xbox independent recommendations; I had no idea that even existed until just now. I really like the Xbox 360 as a platform; I just wish it wasn't quite as much of a pig in terms of heat, noise and power. But with the addition of PlayOn to my PC, I have pretty much given up on standard Window Media Center, and have been happily using it to consume Hulu, Amazon VOD and the like.

@Finagle It's probably a good way to keep those neural pathways lubricated :) I've hit CTRL+Z in a few pc games. Muscle memory is funny.

I'm playing Doom 2 with gzdoom. I just had to remap the keys so I don't have to hold a modifier to sidestep. Other than that it's aged very well. The level design design is brilliant. Ammo and health are at just the right place so that I'm always running low.

Has anyone made a good FPS sans free look recently? Not being able to look up or down really makes you zip through the levels and changes the game dynamic. I've demoed Painkiller and Serious Sam, but they don't feel as exciting. Doom was kinda a first person Robotron. I'd be interested to play a game that tackled that kind of arcade action with modern technology.

Serious Sam is as close as you're going to get to Doom, I'm afraid. Also recommended- Heretic. Nothing modern abandons free-look, though. I think a couple of the Doom-engine spinoffs were the last to have no vertical viewing. You could kind-of get by without it in Duke 3D, and I remember the auto-vertical-targeting seemed to do a better job of hitting things than manually aiming, but after that it's all free-look, all the time.

I'll also throw my vote on Demon's Souls as Best Game on PS3. While it's punishing, I only rarely felt like it was unfairly so. Demon's Souls makes you pay for your mistakes, but isn't so hard that a bit of care won't avoid making them.

Good luck. My brother has tried and failed to max BSing on a pair of toons. Getting those extra sockets is a nice bonus though, plus the crafted belts/weapons for 85 are really nice It just requires so much ore @.@ I dropped like 8k gold maxing Jewelcrafting and Alchemy in the first couple of days of Cata but I seem to have hit a profit making rut right after I dropped 4k on Master flying, hovering at like 18-19k right now.

In a weird crossover, I just poured the last week into the PC version of Blood Bowl. The places where they just faithfully implemented the official rules are really good, the places where they tried to add their own stuff is almost all terrible, and the overall feel is high quality with incredibly rough edges (like all the interfaces being the wrong shape if you don't have a 4:3 screen, or having to look at the scrolling text log if you want to know what's actually happening)
