It seems he made an excursion to the northshore to evade the crush of weirdos in town for Mardi Gras.

COVINGTON – A New Orleans lawyer sporting a purple cape, top hat and carrying a suitcase full of sex toys who visited a 24-year-old house-sitter has been arrested on counts of attempted rape and other crimes, police said.

Lawrence J. Goldstein, 40, 1020 St. Claude Ave., New Orleans, attacked the woman early Monday, ripping her clothes off, torturing her, and forcing her to inhale “laughing gas” and smoke marijuana, Covington police said in a statement Tuesday.

Goldstein, who had sprayed the upper half of his body pink and sprinkled it with glitter, also brought a canister of nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas, police said.

The woman had her 6-month-old infant with her and went along with Goldstein’s demands, thinking he would calm down. After several rape attempts, she escaped to make a frantic 911 call about 3:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

When officers arrived, they saw Goldstein running around wearing only his trousers, West said.

Officers booked Goldstein with attempted rape, false imprisonment and possession of a dangerous chemical substance, police said.

He was released later Monday on a combined bond of $17,000.

The attempted rape count is preset at $35,000 but was lowered to $15,000 during a hearing Monday, St. Tammany Parish jail officials said.

Goldstein, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the New Orleans City Council in February 2002, found the woman’s information through http://

The woman was trying to sell child equipment on the online classifieds page, Lt. Jack West, Covington police spokesman, said Wednesday.

Goldstein and the woman began communicating on the Internet, West said, and somehow Goldstein got her cell phone number.

He later called to ask if he could come over because he had too many people at his house and couldn’t sleep. She agreed to let him come over to her residence only to sleep, West said.

Goldstein arrived also initially wearing black pants and a purple satin shirt.

The suitcase contained whips, chains, a large vibrator and handcuffs, according to the police statement.

The trunk of his car was packed with hay, along with two Hula Hoop plastic hoops and a whip, police said.

Officers turned over the nitrous oxide canister to State Police for disposal.

The infant was unharmed, police said.
