A friend suggested "Diigo" to me -- www.diigo.com -- which seems to be able to handle the import of my exported Delicious bookmarks (still chugging along right now, but the rumor is that it'll preserve tags, notes, etc.) and works basically in exactly the same way.

They also seem to be pay-supported -- if you upgrade from the free account, you get more advanced features like custom highlighting on the bookmarked web pages -- which may keep the up and running, since it amounts to about five bucks a month for the cheapest plan.

It also has collaborative elements to it, so if anyone is interested, I'm eric_trautmann on that service.

-E

I remember trying out Delicious via a post from Warren and since then I never stopped using it. From daily "must read" links, to bookmarks, and recently to archive the links I could post on twitter and redirect them to my blog (autofeed for the lazy girl).
Not only i'm infuriated by the fact Yahoo decided to ditch delicious employees right before xmas, but I'm also losing a great tool I was using daily.

As for alternatives, I've been advised to use http://pinboard.in
You pay a small fee when signing up but it should be able to do the trick on the long run.
SHOULD. Because I'm guessing they're under heavy load at the moment, digital exodus probably, and even if I imported all my bookmarks two hours ago, they're still not showing up at the moment.

Considering the huge exodus expected along the weeks, I'm also guessing we'll soon see some sexy plugins to daily autopost on wordpress. I'm hoping for it. Please. Anyone ? *o.o*

Took me about a half an hour to seamlessly migrate from delicious to google bookmarks, and I've lost absolutely zero functionality (from running delicious plugin in firefox across computers). But it's kind of an ugly process(one of those you can't get there from here without two extra steps, damnit), so I'm gonna type it up here.

1. You're gonna install three plugins to get everything transferred across. You're only going to KEEP one, so no need to worry about memory leaks, but I'm assuming that, like me, you've got about 8 gajillion nicely sorted and nested lables, and you'd like to keep them. So:

Foxylicious - Will keep all your pretty tags/bundles.
Google Toolbar - will quickly and easily upload everything (including tags) from firefox to google.
Gmarks - actually even a little better than the old delicious plugin.

2. Go ahead and install them all at once. That way you're only restarting a couple of times instead of, you know, every time you do anything.

2.5. If you keep some bookmarks separate from delicious (computer-specific links, for instance) you can either make a backup of your Firefox bookmarks ("organize bookmarks" >> make backup) and delete them until after you've made the delicious transfer, or just delete those bookmarks from google later. Your call.

3. Okay. From the foxylicious options menu, go ahead and import all of your delicious links into Firefox. It's going to dump all of your tags (but prettily nested and tagged into folders) into one "Delicious" folder.

4. From the FIREFOX manage bookmarks menu, go ahead and drag all the folders OUT of the Delicious folder (and just into the main bookmarks whatever) and delete the (now empty) delicious folder, as it's, well, empty.

4.5. Okay! Now you've got ALL your delicious bookmarks, tagged and nested, in Firefox. If you don't actually need bookmarks on more than one computer, go ahead and stop here. (And uninstall all the plugins you installed, because you don't need any of them anymore, you're set.)

5. But you probably *do* want your bookmarks on more than one computer, so from the GOOGLE TOOLBAR bookmarks pulldown, select "import bookmarks from Firefox. Let it do its thing and all of your bookmarks should now be stored online just as well as they ever were on delicious.

6. Uninstall foxylicious and google tool bar, as you no longer need either. Because, frankly, google toolbar does a fuckton of really useless shit that just takes up screen space. You just want the same functionality you had with the old delicious plugin, yes? That's your new Gmarks plugin. From its option menu, you can set it to nest tags (using some character for nesting, I use +). Hide the firefox bookmarks menu, or give it its own toolbar, whichever you fancy.

7. If, like me, you've got chrome on some computers and firefox on the others, all you need to do is install instances of the Gmarks plugin in the firefox installs, and chrome will handle things natively anyway, so that's done. Ta mother fucking da, and fuck you Yahoo I'm just fine without delicious.

This is a real kick in the nuts, as Delicious worked very well and was nicely designed to make everything simple and intuitive. It is also a bit of a wake-up call about the problems of cloud computing. I am unsure why they haven't tried to sell it on or cut it loose, rather than just binning it - there must be some interest as adding context and meaning to links is surely of interest to someone out there, especially search engines. Ah well, such is the way of corporate beasts.

Thanks for to Ariana for the tips, I do seem to always end up being pulled back to Google, at least they aren't going to go down the pan any time soon. I hope...

It doesn't have the social aspects, but if you just want to synchronize bookmarks chrome can link your bookmarks to a gmail account automatically. They don't advertise it, but you can also view all your chrome bookmarks in google docs in any browser. From docs you could set up social bookmark sharing on a smaller more intimate level, but you can't really use it to track trends or anything like that. Remembering my own custom tags sometimes gives me problems, but other than that I like it. Chrome's bookmark search is very zippy. Another plus is that I've forgotten my password for every other bookmark hosting site I've tried.

As far as note taking goes google notebook seemed promising, but they stopped updating it and I use Docs now. I just found a chrome extension called Snippy and if it actually works it would be pretty great for note taking. I'm just waiting on some slow downloads so I can restart my browser and try it. Has anyone tried Springpad? It sounds really powerful, but I'm not sure how they can offer it for free. Looks fun so I guess I'll have to test it too.
