I wanted to state my love for his music and mourn his passing.

The Captain (for it was he) told the guitarist that he would be expected to keep up with this - that was his job and though the piece was quite complicated, it was beautiful and the captain wanted it how he wanted it. The guitarist said "That's great, Don. But you have ten fingers, I only have six strings." The good Captain replied "Well, I don't know how you're gonna do it, but you better find four more, man!" and hung up.

First time I saw him perform, it was a small club in Huntington Beach, he had a new Magic Band and was between record labels. Must have been 1976 or so - new material was from "Bat Chain ...

I had no idea what to expect, having only heard a couple tracks on a live album he shared with Zappa.

It was one of the most amazing shows I've ever experienced. Redefined what I thought of as "music", became an adjective I describe other music with.

And when the audience clapped for an encore, they did it in Beefheartesque rhythms...
