    The fact that he's been working on one damned book (which was supposedly half written when AFFC came out) for almost SIX YEARS has basically made me give up on the guy. AFFC was pretty bad compared to the first three, and I'm starting to agree with all of the people on the internet postulating that he actually has no freaking clue what he's doing at this point. Between '96 and '00 he released three books. That's three books in 4 years. It's now taken him more than a decade to write TWO, one of which is still not released. The vast majority of his "blog" is him either trying to sell crap, talking about football, or talking about casting decisions for the HBO show. Maybe one in ten posts is actually dedicated to writing the next damned book, and then these are usually something along the lines of "decided i didn't like that chapter, re-writing it". All of this is in addition to the fact that he's not been nice either time i've met him (pay for autographs, no questions about ASOIAF, arrives late and leaves early from conventions).

    I'd love it if Dance comes out, it's great, and then we get several more great books in a quicker fashion. But I'm not holding my hopes out for it...

    @Paladine

    I don't remember everyone liking Rhaegar, mainly I remember everyone being blood well terrified of all the Trageryans.

    Maybe the series will just end up finishing up everything. I'd be okay with that.

    RenThing: re-read it, then :) (just kidding) It's possible I misremember, but I have read the books several times, and I have the impression that it's always like "the Targaryens were bad – but Rhaegar, now, that was a knight (and a poet, and musician)". And I feel that Jorah Mormont's tale to Daenerys about him comes very close to the truth; she demands truth, and it's not like he would lie to her about how her family was miscast as villains.

    Well, I guess we'll know if one day the book comes out where Howland Reed tells his tale.

    I will wait for as many years as it takes if it means getting something near the level of the first 2. I also think he stated the last book and the next are on the same time line with different characters. I don't mind waiting for art as long as it achieves the caliber I expect from the first pieces. Think about how long we waited for Planetary. I know many things occurred hindering its completion but I would have waited ten more years for what it turned out to be. I expect the same from Martin.

    As for the show. I can't wait for the series to come out on DVD. I'm not paying HBO for on program.

    @Ryan C

    They pretty much are. AFFCs was supposed to encompass them all but he found he'd created too many main characters and to put them all in one book would've been daunting (and his books are very nearly doorstops as it is). The problem is he wrote himself into a pretty serious corner with the Myrinese (sp?) plot-line and has been hacking away at ever since, trying to fit it into his over-all plot.

    I read that earlier. The fact that they put down mesh...to protect the ground beneath the sand...is just so full of WTF.

    Haha, I just got an update from Amazon on Dance with Dragons. Good news! It's eligible for "release date delivery"! December 25, 2012. I wish they would just say it's coming out in 2020 so I can be excited when it's early instead of constantly sad that it's late.
    Don't take the Amazon date seriously. They and other retailers have posted dates a number of times in the past, and GRRM has consistently said they're full of shit. When he turns in the manuscript there will be a schedule. Until then, anything you hear from anybody is bogus.
