Hey all, with the year rounding out and everyone taking stock of 2010 in the "Best of" lists, I got thinking about having ALL of the various art/creative types on these boards looking over their output in 2010 and posting what THEY thought was the best single piece of art/design/photography/video/music that they did this year, thus creating a "Whitechapel Greatest Hits of 2010" concentrated super-thread.

I'd say we open it up to all postable forms of entries, ONE per person, picking it because you feel it's your best work, not just because it's your most popular one you've previously posted here. Others may disagree with your choice, but that doesn't matter. It should be YOUR best work according to you. This thread can continue into the new year, but let's keep the entries just from 2010.

I feel like 2010 was a really good year for me, art wise. At the end of 2009 I did a piece that helped me sort of find my way as an artist, and since then, I finally feel like I can call myself an artist. I've had some bad pieces, but not so much crap as I used to do. (Seems like most of what I've posted to Whitechapel have been bad pieces. My few submissions to the remake/remodel thread are few for a reason.)
Anyway, here's a piece I'm particularly fond of. My boyfriend asked for one for Christmas, so I'll dust off the keyblock and get going on that once I have access to a printing press again. I'm thinking I'd like to do a second edition with a different background.

sadly since I've been so busy with my day job and moving in to a new place, I only got one painting done this year. so I guess this is my best because it's my only finished piece:

hopefully 2011 will be more fruitful.

2010 has been fun. I've been teaching myself to draw this year. I started off really bad. But I've stuck to a routine of about 25 hours of just drawing every week, and you can really see a progression.

Thusly, this is my favorite piece of 2010 because it's the drawing where I decided I wanted to really work on said skills. This is where I caught the drawering bug:

Throughout this year I wrote prose and made quite a few illustrations. But the thing I'm proudest of this year are the 149 strips I made for my webcomic PITCH BLACK, because of the discipline and dedication they demanded from me, and the rewarding and encouraging response I got from readers. Of all the strips -- including the incredibly time-consuming special editions with more than eighty panels -- I think this one is my personal favorite:

Nice work everyone, I remember a few of these and am even more impressed this second time around. To choose a best out of the work I did this year would infer that some of it was actually good. Since that is unlikely I'd like to share this video with everyone instead. Most of the animations were made between 2001- 2005 but they have been sitting in a box unedited and without audio for years. Early in the fall I finally took the time to put them together and make an electronic score with a couple of my musician friends. Although the end result is less than fantastic, making the music for this cartoon was by far the most fun and exciting thing I did creatively this year. It was really neat to work with sound rather than ink for a change.

I made three new sculptures this year and, considering that before this I've made some and managed to lose records/images of them before scanning and their destruction, though I'm happy I managed to get my shit together, I am especially happy with this one - Sculpture III: I am Lacking an I.

Obviously I'm pretty damn proud of 800 Memories Per Second as a whole, but if I had to pick just one thing off the album, right now I'd choose this (unedited live) version of Erik Satie's Gnossienne #1:

Going on stage and playing one of my favourite pieces with a completely untested technique* was scary as hell and paid off in spades.

* In this case I had a dictaphone in the tweeter horn of the monitor speaker, and the last refrain is the recording of the first one, played back from the dictaphone through the guitar pickups and effects. Warble, hiss, LOUD.

ETA: I've said this before, but it bears repeating. The album would not exist without Whitechapel. So thank you.

2010 is the year that I started calling myself a photographer, as opposed to "By day I do [day job], but I'm also a..."

It's also the year that I managed to strike the right balance between my event/burlesque work and my more personal work so I don't feel like I'm either running myself ragged or idle to the point of hermitage. So while I'm delighted by my burlesque shots and the fact that I managed to expand my range all the more this year, I think this is my best shot:

Expressive, quiet and generally the opposite of the stage.

...Wow. It's really hard to think of something like that. This whole year was big...with January being the month that I started taking photography seriously. Since then it's been a blur of photo shoots with so many being my favorite.

After going through my shots over the past year a few times, I think this might be my best shot.

This is a tough one or me since I've drawn quite a bit this year. Not sure if it's my best one but it's one of my favourites this year. I really enjoying drawing loose and spontaneous despite the fact that it doesn't always work but when it does... Must endeavour to draw more next year..

Agreed. It's kind of scary.
I didn't start the thread as a mutual appreciation society kind of thing, but just glancing at any given artist thread, any Remake challenge, the Photography threads, the DJ Mixes thread... there is a ton a really great work popping up here.
I love seeing people venture forth from here and get good work. Seeing Afua Richardson and Annie Wu jump from here to bigger gigs is a real charge, but so deserved.
That's why I hang out here; fertile creative ground.

What I'd say was my best work of the year is one humogous thing that I started in 2009 and which is still ongoing - Thrilling Tales of the Downright Unusual is a big, complex and challenging project that gives me a place to write stories of the retro future, some interactive, and publish them on the web and as books. I even got to put together a trailer for it, and that fed into the Kickstarter promotion that helped keep to the project going.

The web site gives me lots of ways to pretend that I'm brilliant*, with pop-up illustrations, saved places, and gamelike inventory items; and the need to crank out all the many illustrations has kept me busy. In fact I'm still busy, since the first sequential story will start appearing there in about a month's time and I'm also working on the next interactive Tale.

What makes it my best for the year is that it's an ongoing canvas that I can continue to expand on. In fact it may be the single neatest thing I've ever made.

*Oops: I forgot the Pulp Sci Fi Title-O-Tron. Jeepers!

I had a bit of a hard time choosing. There were three or four pieces fighting for the first spot (including one that I discarded as it was the last page of one of my short comics and thus a huge spoiler) but I have finally went with this:

The sad thing I've noticed was that I have barely finished... wait... hmm... 69 pieces including the comics pages?

i had a quiet year due to work commitments and health issues so I didn't make much music.
I'm pretty proud of the ambient piece I did with Darren Tate, The Earth in Play, which has hit some top ten lists for the year (always gratifying and humbling).

The thing I'm most happy with though is my attempt at a BBC Radiophonic Workshop style soundtrack...

Mostly done little digital doodles this year - a lot of them in connection with whitechapel; You guys are like an inspiration faucet, which I should probably make use of more often. One of my oldest paintings caught fire during the new year celebrations; the damage isn't too bad, but will need patching. Should probably be taken as an omen to finish some more. Current painting stalled because of lack of light, studio space, time and general slackness.

Hey Guys! As I have greatly enjoyed the art and inspiration you guys have set forth herein, I thought I too would take a stab by showing one of my favorite pieces I did this year. Earlier this year I did a bit of revisionist history fandom type art pertaining to to of my favorite oddball Marvel Comics denizens: The Mimic and The Super Adaptoid. My greatest creative endeavour of 2010 was a piece of software. I'm posting it here 'cause it was a great exercise in creativity and design, but if I'm stretching the criteria for this thread too far, just let me know and I'll pull it.

The Magnificent Playlist Producer is a mixtape creator. I wrote it in response to Warren's lament that The 4am podcast was difficult to assemble due to crappy software.

It's a simple application to combine multiple songs into one MP3. It reads just about any audio file you can throw at it, and (if I succeeded in my design) it's stable and intuitive to use.

If it sounds interesting and/or useful to you, I invite you to check it out.

This was the last track I did for the only album I made last year and it's the track I'm happiest with.

A Belgium radio station chose to play it as I was whoring the album around the internet. I was happy for the broadcast but REALLY happy that: "they chose the right track! - They get it!"

The best writing I did was a in a letter that I sent.
I did not make much with knitting or crochet this year - odd for me.
I took a picture of a dead wasp at Fatehpur Sikri.

This is my greatest hits moment because of everything it says about the people that I love - also because I was not the only person in our group to take this picture.

This is fantastic thread! Thanks to @Paul Sizer for starting it. This place is filled with so many creative, active and questioning people and I'm always daunted at the sheer AmazePower of the work shared here.

The EP it came from got some nice reviews too.

I had such a great year checking out the writing, music and art of the Whitechapel community. It is a pleasure and a privelege being a fellow traveller.

There are some amazing people here producing some really quite wonderful stuff. Me? I'm a fairly clueless old git with a camera cleverer than he is himself. I blunder about snapping at things and sometimes, if i'm very lucky, i get a result i like. Getting a result that someone else likes still comes as a bit of a shock though. When the good Mr Ginja of this parish chose to use one of my snaps in a piece he wrote in Ectoplasmosis - well i had to go for a sit down and a nice warm mug of cocoa. I don't know if it's my best picture of the year but, thanks to Mr Ginja and Mr Ellis, it certainly proved to be the most popular.
