Archer is coming back at the end of the month. I'm watching through the first season and am surprised to find it's actually quite funny. Shameless premieres on HBO on the 9th, FX's Lights Out on the 11th and Parks & Rec finally returning on the 20th. I don't expect The Cape to be any good, but I'll give it a go. Justified comes back February, and other than that and all the shows coming back from hiatus, there's not much to mention.

Watched the first two episodes of Max Headroom, via a DVD collection I bought last month. I had them on crummy VHS tapes recorded off the air, but I wanted fresh crisp recordings and was interested in the commentary.

What a strange experience. It isn't exactly dated; the grunge-tech look is in a sense timeless. On the other hand the wireframe computer graphics are awfully archaic looking and action dwells on them, suggesting that at the time they were damn cool and worth dwelling on.

The feisty anti-corporate, anti-big-media theme of the show . . . relevant as ever.

The little booklet that came with the collection notes that Bryce Lynch was born in 1988, suggesting that we're already lived through Max's time.

Archer is coming back at the end of the month. I'm watching through the first season and am surprised to find it's actually quite funny

If you like Archer, you should check out the two seasons of its predecessor, Frisky Dingo. They're only eleven minutes long and while it starts off slow, it has a sort of unstoppable momentum to its humor as the plot and characters get more and more out of hand.

I too look forward to the second season of Archer as well as the return of 30 Rock. I'm considering Parks and Recreation due to Adam Scott joining the cast, but I am as of yet skeptical towards network sitcoms.

I watched a couple episodes of The Vice Guide to Everything over the past week or two. First off, I haven't watched MTV in years, but the guys behind Heavy Metal Baghdad looked worth it.

At first glance, the show seems impressive, with ballsy filmmaker & crew going places that are hard to get into and reporting on tough topics, like the all-white town in South Afrika, or on Narco-Cinema in Mexico. But after watching a couple episodes, there's definitely a slant to their reporting.

When filming Border Rangers in Arizona, instead of discussing the dangerous risk that local militias are taking, they poke fun at the rednecks with assult rifles who say that they aren't interested in your average illegal immigrant coming over the border; they're looking for drug dealers and violent cartel members smuggling drugs, etc. into the USA. Which is fine, if that's how you see it. But then to go to a small village in Pakistan and buy automatic weapons and shoot them off of rooftops and say how cool it is, and point RPGs at the camera, and later revisit the small town and show that its under control of the Taliban because of the US's attacks in Afghanistan, and say how sad it is that you can't go back there and buy more weapons. I find the show to be the kind of snarky that I don't like, like they're trying to prove how cool they are instead of how serious the topic they're covering really is. But, hey, it's just another fucking show on MTV so I don't know why I held it to a higher standard in the first place.

I had some decent expectations for the show, based on what I knew from the creators, and now I'm kind of pissed at them.

So I saw part of The Cape yesterday but I cut out right about the time they introduced "The Circus of Crime." I think the biggest problem I had with this show is that I'm not eight years old. Eight year old me would've loved The Cape. I still like Batman, Superman, Spider-man and Iron Man because they got to me before my analytical adult had formed to tell me that radiation gives cancer instead of cool powerz.

 Where's my new episodes?
@misterhex

Love to be of help.:) First off pretty much all the latest episodes are on you tube.

You can go here to see the episode list and the order they go in. They even have the upcoming, unaired episodes up too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Avengers:_Earth%27s_Mightiest_Heroes_episodes

in order to find the specific episodes in You tube.

Type out "The Avengers Earth's mightiest heroes and then the title of the episode and that will give you a direct link to that episode."
Ie. "The avengers earths mightiest heroes Masters of evil."

the captain marvel episode is called "459"

the one I posted on top is the first episode of the Kang the Conqueror storyline(looks like this will be a three parter"

The Thor vs Hulk you mentioned was "some assembly required" I think, and if that is the last episode you've seen than you have 9 new episodes to see on you tube.

Helpful?

I'm super psyched about Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein's Portlandia on IFC, which I think starts Jan 21. IFC has been showing so much good shit, lately (finally checking out Larry Sanders Show on there, so it's new to me...), and Fred Armisen is hilarious. Ricky Gervais Show season 2 on HBO soon, either tomorrow or next Friday...

Episodes with Matt LaBlanc was TERRIBLE. Will give a second episode, but God the first one was a pain to watch. Shameless was damn good, though.

Also very curious about Syfy's new Face Off competition show, which seems to be like Top Chef for makeup special effects artists. I'm way into old-school movie effects, so if it's cool, that will be nice. Syfy does weird shit sometimes, though...

Bob's Burgers was funny enough. It's certainly a different vibe than Simpsons or the McFarland shows, and I'm a Home Movies fan, so I'll stick with it awhile.

Oh, and Rupaul's Drag Race is back on, which is a fucking hoot. If you like Project Runway, these trannies make way crazier dresses out of basically nothing in half the time and never bitch and moan about it, then they wear them down the runway while catfight-lipsynching. It's awesome and wholesome.

Will check out the Being Human remake (with the werewolf, vamp and ghost living together) but don't expect much. Skipping the Skins remake because while I thoroughly enjoyed the British version the first time around, I can see all the exact same scenes in the trailers, and just don't have the energy to watch it over again with more annoying American people.

And still waiting for Inbetweeners season 3 on BBC America.

Caught Eagleheart last night, but if you already can't stand Chris Elliot, then you won't like it. It's somewhat a parody of terrible cop movies, and I like it, because of the ridiculously bad acting.

Also, Hard Time on NatGeo is pretty good, about an Ohio State Prison, the inmates open up fairly well, showing what illegal things they are doing behind the walls, and are pretty candid about how they feel. Obviously, not for the faint of heart; the insights into a homosexual inmate who isn't sure if he'd be straight or not if he wasn't locked up, a life long felon who likes being in prison, a kid who's been locked up his whole life and is scared of being released in a few days, all of these stories hit pretty hard, even if you've seen this kind of stuff before.

Guys, if you've been avoiding the Spartacus shows... trust me, they are splendid. The 6-part prequel series Gods of the Arena just got to ep 5 - and amidst the semi-300-ultraviolence, tight plotting and the vast amount of nudity and swearing, there's a truly extraordinary love story told between John Hannah and Lucy Lawless - Lawless this week was beyond superlatives. And yes, she gets nekkid, a lot.

Fringe seems to be heading towards a kind of 'love conquers or maybe destroys all' ending for Season 3, with no promise of a 4th. I hope this wonderful slice of clever SF gets more chance to tell its' tale.

I suspect Justified may be even better this season - Margot Martindale's reefer-growing matriarch is a fine addition to the story.

And... Outcasts was a colossal pile of shite. It's getting raves from mainstream press & even the likes of IO9 - yet they're stripping the last 3 eps across one late night, so even the Beeb knows they've got a dog on their hands. What fucks me off it they'll point to it as "see, we do adult sci-fi now!". What a waste.

This whole season of Community has been great, it's one of my favourite shows just now. That D&D ep was particularly good.
Can say much the same about Fringe, it's had some pretty wonderful moments lately.
And... yes, Outcasts was terrible - the kind of joyless, earnest SF that leads to hatecrimes against geeks.

The scene where:

he said, "So many things, Abed, so many things" on his throne of boxes and cones had me simultaneously busting a gut and getting shivers down my spine, not a combination I thought I'd ever experience.

And his inflection in the, "...Jeff Winger, of all people..." line was damn near perfect.

Watch this episode if you like things that are funny or parodies of fantasy stuff or D&D. I am really jazzed to see Game of Thrones this April. HBO seems to be the go-to-place for drama on television this season. If Game of Thrones manages to be successful enough for us to see A Clash of Kings and a Storm of Swords, holy shit I will be so pumped. I'm on Feast for Crows at the moment but those first three books were really great.

Also in April I am increasingly getting pumped for Treme season 2. I am watching Season 1 as we speak and I think it's a really tremendous show and I am enjoying it immensely. I'm invested and intrigued by damn near every character's story arc's and motivations. Loving it.

And then Boardwalk Empire which I just recently finished?! Holy shit HBO is kicking a lot of ass.

Then if we can get Mad Men back this year also. I was lost for solid drama on the television but the triple play of Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, and Treme will fill that void. And if Game of Thrones turns out to be a great adaptation then just YAY.

Brian Michael Bendis on FX's 'Powers' pilot
Last week, FX announced it was producing a pilot for a proposed series based on Powers, a long-running saga about cops in a city teeming with superheroes. Think: NYPD Blue meets Watchmen; Jack Kirby meets James Ellroy. Handling the adaptation: writer/producer Charles H. Eglee (formerly of The Shield and Dark Angel; he also helped filmmaker Frank Darabont bring The Walking Dead to TV life) and veteran TV director Michael Dinner. Superstar comic book scribe Brian Michael Bendis — who created Powers with artist Michael Avon Oeming — will work on the show as an exec producer.

Since launching in 2000, Powers has distinguished itself as one of the comic industry’s best, most visually distinctive, and certainly edgiest superhero comics. The creators’ cited influences: Homicide: Life on the Street and Taxi Driver. Yet the Powers world isn’t just grim and gritty; it’s deep and mythic, too.

I've been a fan of Fringe since day 1, and man, this whole concept of Bell-livia is pushing it for me. I really want to see this series finish well, in a satisfying way, but the way it's going, I just really don't want to be pissed off.

 @StefanJ wrote
Max Headroom . . . It isn't exactly dated; the grunge-tech look is in a sense timeless. On the other hand the wireframe computer graphics are awfully archaic looking and action dwells on them, suggesting that at the time they were damn cool and worth dwelling on.
The graphics were already dated at the time, but you've nailed it on how the action dwelt on them - it was just one more piece of the whole self-aware, tongue-in-cheek undercurrent. Most folks either just didn't get it or thought they were being talked down to. Unfortunates the middle group between those two just wasn't very big.
