2011 is a year were photography will take a more important place in my life with two possible exhibition (small galleries) and a book. The last one is going to be a photographic graphic novel (a "Roman photo" in french ...).

So I know that I'll need to inject more substance in my work and I need to have be somehow more ... coherent. Anyway, feel free to give some advices my blog is Les Fonds du Tiroir.

Here are some I took the other day. They're unedited (with the exception of the bottom photo, which my boyfriend edited for me), though the top 3 I don't think really need it. I love the construction photo because of the way the sunlight is shining through it, although it didn't come out quite as kick as as I think it could have (though this one I think can definitely be enhanced with some editing).

This one one very San Diego to me.

This is a photo of the wonderful and gorgeous dancer Rhonda Clark, who the enormously lovely Saint Katelan Foisy introduced me to when I was last in Paris.
It will be on display at the international video dance festival in Burgandy this spring so hooray for that! I know it would be a small thing to many more accomplished people here, but I'm very pleased and completely delighted to be included.



So far this year is crazy busy but full of so many joyous things too.

Lately I've been doing a sort of digital collage where I use only my own photographs as source material. This particular one combines that main shot (taken in a courtyard from a flat overlooking it) with shots I took from a moving train during a rainstorm. So that vignette effect is actually an overlaid image where I extracted the shot up to the tree lines (as in I cut out the sky from the photo).

I've been combining dance images with train images for reasons that make sense in my head but when I try to articulate them so far it basically results in me waving my hands around and saying things about motion, travel, architecture, and relating to things by moving through them.
So, uh, you know. I'm interested in structure and transition. SENSE APPEAL COFFEE ROASTERS (For those in Toronto, it's located at 96 Spadina Ave at Spadina/Adelaide). They haven't been around for long, but they have a hell of a good way to attract new people. Basically for every 100 likes they get on their facebook page, they have an entire day where a drink of their choosing is free. Recently they have started experimenting with a new blend and have been giving free espressos of their experiments in exchange for the customer's thoughts. This...is so damn smart to me. And it helps that the store is staffed witha bunch of awesome (and yes, cute) friendly guys who clearly love the hell out of coffee.

i get to cheat when I take that one out, actually: the bakelite hawkeyes are big enough to fit a 120 in the payout slot, so I only have to respool it once I've exposed the frames to save my 620 ...

Case in point:

I had to fix that one a bit to get the contrast decent, and the second i started messing with it digitally, the lines jumped out hard.

also from that camera, with a flying elbow cropped out of the image:


as far as the unpredictability thing goes, apparently I picked up a disturbingly consistent one. It exposes at pretty close to 50 every time. the only reason I didn't get more than one or two decent frames out of every roll was simply through my own inconsistency in framing my shots and picking subjects.

@William Joseph Dunn, I agree that La Antigua de Guatemala was the totally unexpected gem. Only a 40 minute Chicken Bus ride from the horrors of La Ciudad and there you have the ancient capitol. It is like something out our Mr. Ellis' stories, it was utterly destroyed in 1776 by a massive earthquake and abandoned. They moved the capitol across the mountain and for 100 years left Antigua to rot in the jungle. It was home to brigands, pirates, thieves, and lowlifes of all stripes until the government decided to take it back by force and sent in the army. Even so it took quite some years to dislodge them all and begin to repair and reoccupy it. Ruined cathedrals everywhere speak to its onetime opulence, enclosed Spanish style residences to its cloistered history. I ended up staying there a lot in between travels around the country because I just kept coming back for more.
There is nothing like Tikal up in Peten though, I was going to mention it before but thought better because if you had not made it there I didn't want to make you feel bad. It is just incredible, yeah?

No, the main temple was closed off. The guide said that someone had spray painted graffiti on it once and so they had to shut it down. You could go on some of the smaller buildings, though.
