He was flying around looking extremely serious. I tried shooing him toward the outside, but though he eventually got out I'm not sure my attempt to help did any good.
Later that day I tried drawing a little comic of the incident, and never finished it. These were sketches I did trying to capture the bird's attitude.
Just came across them as I'm packing things up to move again. I haven't seen them in six years, probably. They feel like they were done by a different person, but I rather like what he did with them.]]>

SO if you could look at these first three pages and tell me what you think is wrong with them (and whether you would continue or switch to perhaps flat coloring or something if it was your project) because I need a fresh distanced look from someone else, I've been living with those pages since I pencilled and inked them end of December/early January and I don't know anymore.
also, uncolored page 4, so you get some idea where this is going...
Later stuff contains some speedlines during dynamic bits, stark b/w during darker scenes etc. so I don't know if the textured look is apt for the project.

@Aurora - I think the colouring on the first page is great. Maybe that's because it's quite a limited palette and is quite dark/dense - and that's the sort of thing I like to do. The second page (and to a lesser extent the 3rd) is a bit bright/saturated for my taste.
I never studied colour theory or anything formally but, in my experience, colouring is a very less-is-more sort of thing. The fewer colours you can use, and the smaller the range, the better. (By range, I mean: rather than the entire scale from pure black to pure white, make the darkest bits dark grey and the lightest bits light grey - this avoids being garish, and I think colours feel richer in this range.)
I definitely like the textured feel, and I think you should stick with it - it certainly gives depth to yr art.
(Also, I apologise if I'm totally talking out of my ass here - you can assess the quality of my advice better than I can, by seeing the weird colour choices I make...)

@256: I'm not a master of coloring day scenes, I just stick to "grass is green, wood is brown, sky is blue" kind of thing on those.
@mercurialblonde: The sign on page two was meant to stick out form the art in the "this is not part of the scene" way but I'll see if I can do it in a different fashion. I'll also see aboutthe colors on the last page, maybe that will help.
@staticgirl: Thanks, one of my worries is actually whether I'm obscuring the lineart too much or not (I hate it when that happens in comics, you see a great inked page and then you see the finished color version and all the delicious lines are gone in deep browns and blues).
Anyway, here's a flat colored page from another comic I did recently for comparison. Meanwhile I'll try to tweak the pages a little and see if I can do something good on page 4.

Also, if you're not using a stylus, you should look into getting a boxwave or a pogo stylus.

When I'm doing these ink wash drawings I usually do the backgrounds first, working wet on wet: I get the pencil sketch how I like it I then carefully brush clean water into the areas around the figure (usually a few times to keep it wet, since the paper is very thirsty) with a No.6 brush. Then I work into the wet area with pure ink, and since the ink will only move around and fill the areas that are already wet, I don't have to worry about it bleeding into the character or other elements (as long as I'm not too sloppy) , and I can have some fun moving it around and boosting the blacks an letting it do it's swirly ink thing... I have to work fast though, and I always work with two water jars with me- a clean one, and a dirty one - so that I can rinse the bulk of the ink out of my brush in the dirty one, then a quick rinse into the clean one so that I can attack the wet black on the page with a 'clean' brush and soften up the edges or work tightly into the edges of the figure.]]>

@Paul Renderwrx- haha!- no worries man- I've been freelancing since '99 and have illustrated more than 40 full sized graphic novels (among other RPG stuff, fanzine stuff and charity illustration work) but I doubt anyone over the age of 10 has seen or read any of them, as most were either for (really really) small press or historical/educational/ESL readers for Scholastic and other children's book publishers. So the only people who really know of me are kids in grade 4 history class (and they're not likely to read the credits of the books I draw ;) and the lovely folks on these Whitechapel threads ;) I am greatly indebted to our host for letting me post my work here and getting me 'started' (more than a decade after I began my career)]]>
